New Tech for You and Yours

Not that we are all about the plugging in (in fact, quite the opposite) but there is a time and a place for everything.  When you are looking to upgrade, here are some ideas that can make your next trip that much easier.

pic9Tiggly develops interactive apps for toddlers and preschoolers, as it has been shown through research that manipulating physical objects helps develop key skills in early childhood development. Tiggly Counts is an award-winning math learning toy aimed at ages 18 months- 6 years old.  The goals of Tiggly is to help children develop spatial reasoning, motor skills, language, and creativity.  They have another product in this line available as well, Tiggly Shapes.   When you buy the Tiggly Counts package, you receive the counting objects, that children use to interact with the 3 included apps Tiggly Cardtoons, Tiggly Addventure, and Tiggly Chef . Kids can use the apps with mom and dad to help, or on their own.  They are pretty proud when they accomplish a task “all by themselves”, and the app and counting objects help them learn counting as well.  Available for $30 on http://get.tiggly.com/counts, works with iPhone/iPad and androids.

coloring appPainting Lulu is part coloring book, part app.  Kids can color in the activity book, then scan the page into their tablet using the included free Painting Lulu app.  The art shows up an the screen, where they can keep coloring, retouching, and changing it up as they would like.  They can also start with blank pages and go from there.  The pages can easily be printed, saved, and shared with parents as well.  It comes with the coloring book, app, and digital crayon (stylus) for $9.99 on www.paintinglulu.com. Transformers Robots in Disguise New TV Show

There is a new kids TV show coming out called Transformers Robots in Disguise, a new take on a classic show.  The premiere is Saturday, March 14 at 6pm. Following the premiere, new episodes will be seen every Saturday starting on March 21st at 6:30am on Cartoon Network.

With every fun show comes a great toy line- and since Transformers is already so established (my husband and brothers played with them- and my husband still does- back in the 80’s, and my son loves them now) with great toys that transform as well as blockbuster movies and television shows spanning decades, you know this will be a hit.  We watched the first two episodes of “Transformers Robots in Disguise”, and my son loved them and is excited for the new show.  I won’t divulge too much information, but the show had a Japanese animation feel (think Pokemon-ish) to the art, and BumbleBee takes the lead from what we saw. This was just fine by my son, who likes the Bee the best. You will see some of your favorites as well as be introduced to many new characters, both human and “bot”.  The first two episodes also leave some large questions unanswered, so we ourselves will be tuning in to see what’s going on.

Keeping The Kids Busy During Long Winter Days

Versatile- play with it inside, take it outside, pack it up and bring it along with you to grandma’s, even take it into the tub- is the new Playmobil Take Along Zoo and Aquarium.  This set comes with trees, pools, fences, and quite a few animals (such as zebras, giraffes, lions, fish, walrus) and human caretakers as well.  All of these pieces fit easily into the case, which folds up and is easy to store or take along.  When open, one side is the zoo, and the other the aquarium.  Your child can really fill it up with water and let the sea creatures have a swim.  It comes with quite a lot of pieces for one set, and there is room in the case for a few more should your child have some other “animal friends” that want to visit.  Available for $49 on Playmobil’s site.

If you are stuck inside like many of us this winter (the temperatures have been crazy lately- more days in the negative then the positive degrees for much of the country) you are breaking out fun indoor playthings. Some inexpensive ways to replenish or restock are by American Plastic Toys- made right here in the USA, and really low cost.  Take the Fashion Doll Coupe- for only $5 (yes, really) you and your kids can take your toys cruising all over the house.  Since the wheels are plastic, they won’t leave those ugly and annoying black marks on your floors, either. The car is a two seater, and fits most popular dolls as well as smaller stuffed animals and toys.

The Tale of the Proud Chicken – book for kids

The latest book in the Tales of Little Overhill series is now available.  The new book, Tale of the Proud Chicken is a fun read for kids that also gives a moral.  It has a good plot that kids can benefit from, learn from, and enjoy as well.  The images are beautiful, and having animals as the main characters is fun for children.

pic4I first read this to my son, then sent it in with him to his school.  His class really enjoyed the book, and they thought that the chicken was funny and silly.  They liked the chicken’s adventures, and were relived when he went back home.  Being a bunch of 7 year olds, they all pointed out that he wasn’t really a proud chicken, but a proud rooster- which is true, little rats, lol.  After we read the story, we tried to guess what Bible story The Proud Chicken was most like.

INTO THE WOODS – In Theaters December 25

pic2

We recently attended a screening of Disney’s “Into The Woods”, which will be in theaters soon.  My son and I love the theater, and have seen local productions, so I was nervous about seeing the movie.  (You know when you LOVE a book, and the movie isn’t what you thought it would be?  Or when they remake a classic movie and you are horribly disappointed- same goes with sequels.  “Dirty Dancing, Havana Nights” made me want to egg Hollywood.  Somebody should have put the director in the corner.)

However, I am pleased as punch to say we loved it!  All four of us did- my son and I, who were familiar with the play and songs, and my good friend and her son, who had never even heard of it before.  I figured it would be good to get all views, right?

We all thought it was great- funny, the music was great- and thankfully, the actors could actually sing.  Unlike some Broadway shows made into movies where they cast for star-power and not singing ability (cough, Les Miserables) I was thrilled that all the actors could sing- and well!  Yay!  There is nothing worse for a moviegoer and music lover then to have to sit through tragic singing, LOL. Not only are the stars in the movie bright (Hello?  Meryl Streep?) but they are talented actors AND singers, which this musical requires.

Etymotic Kid EarPhones

Picture this, it’s a long car trip and your kids are playing on their various electronic devices. Hours of car ride progress.  Over the course of the ride you have heard Mario fall into a pit about 1,000 times and an Angry Bird launch 5,000 times at a minimum also you can now sing every note of the song for fruit ninja. What to do, other then turn these devices into road side litter? Headphones of course. But this can be a bit unnerving as well. Once you start to hear the sounds from their head phones now, you know the sound is up way too high and damage is being done to little ears which were fine just moments ago. The cheap ones are just that- cheap.  You get what you pay for, and they don’t last nor do they have great volume control. Why not upgrade your pair of headphones? There is a great set of earphones (that go into the ear canal) made by ETYKids that is also very easy to travel with.
