And That’s The Way It Happens…

Have you ever taken your kids on a holiday train ride? This year, we took ours to the The Saratoga & North Creek Railway THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride. The magical story comes to life when the train departs Saratoga Springs for a one hour round-trip journey to the North Pole.  It’s an adorable way to celebrate the season (and if the kids have not seen the movie or read the book yet, make sure they do before you head out).  Make sure you wear your PJ’s for this ride!

Christmas train ride

Set to the sounds of the motion picture soundtrack, passengers will relive the magic of the story as they are whisked away on THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride. Once onboard, cheerful, dancing chefs serve passengers hot chocolate and cookies while they read along with the classic children’s book, The Polar Express, by Chris Van Allsburg. Santa and his helpers greet passengers at the North Pole and then board the train, where each child is given the first gift of Christmas – a silver sleigh bell. Chefs aboard each car lead passengers in singing Christmas carols on the ride back to Saratoga Springs.

The chefs really dance and sing when they deliver the hot chocolate and cookies, it’s quite cute. Other fun favorites show up as well (such as your friendly, mandatory Hobo) and the Conductor punches your child’s tickets, just like in the movie.  Of course, you and your kids will have the chance to meet the big guy himself, Santa, who pays a visit on every train ride.

The Saratoga and North Creek Railway has other fun events and train rides year round. You can find out what is being offered and when by visiting www.SNCRR.com/the-polarexpress-train-ride or calling 877-726-7245.

Bamboo Pillows by Relax Home Life

Bamboo might not sound like the best material to make a soft pillow out of, but these will prove you wrong.  This bamboo is made so that the end product is soft to the touch, but is firm and super comfortable to sleep on.  We were able to review two products by Relax Home Life.  The Bamboo pillow with shredded down alternative and the Foam Wedge Bamboo Pillow With 1.5″ Memory Foam Topper.

These both surpassed expectations. The foam wedge is perfect for those who end up falling asleep in bed watching tv or need relief from acid re-flux, GERD, heartburn, snoring, allergies, insomnia, migraines, neck and back pain, TMJ, and other digestive conditions.  The wedge slightly raises your upper body while keeping your lower body flat.  This slight raise makes a big difference relaxation wise and makes for a nice night’s sleep. Breathing is supported and so are your back and neck.  The top layer is made of 1.5” memory foam for better comfort, letting you experience a more comfortable, soft feel of the cushion. The bottom layer is a firm base foam which provides support.  The wedge is breathable and molds to any sleep position including back, side, and stomach sleeping.  The wedge can also be used to elevate your legs to relieve swelling or to support your stomach when you are pregnant.

Next up is the bamboo pillow with shredded down alternative.  This pillow is extra soft and contours to your head and neck.  The pillow gives you relief from neck stiffness, backache, insomnia and migraines, and could even help with snoring.  What we really like about the pillow is the double zipper design which allows you to make the pillow as tall as you like with a few simple adjustments and zips.  The pillow is great for people who like soft pillows which are also supportive and align to your neck and head.

The Radio City Christmas Spectacular #GreenGiantXRockettes @GreenGiant

radio city

This past week, we went into New York City to see the The Radio City Christmas Spectacular. It’s one of those things that you need to do at least once in your life, if not more often (if you are close enough that you are able).

Running through Jan.2, 2017, you and your family and friends can go see one of NYC’s iconic show’s (and some of the world’s most iconic dancers) to really get the holiday season started. The Rockettes have been performing at Radio City since 1932, and during the Christmas season they preform 7 days a week. The Rockettes also perform every year at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in NYC and America’s Thanksgiving Parade in Detroit. They also lit the Empire State Building red and green for Christmas. Gotta love those hard-working ladies!

Trudeau – Making Food Prep Easy

Coffee is life’s bood for many.  Most are very specific in their personal tastes, and either only enjoy a certain brew from a certain source or only enjoy their beverage a certain way.  While I’m not that picky, and no one in this house is, I will tell you that my husband’s favorite way to make coffee is infusion by French Press.  This method has you first put your coffee into a beaker then add almost boiling water.  This makes the coffee blend with the water.  The longer you keep the infusion working, the stronger and more robust the favor becomes.  If you want something on the tame side, use less coffee and steep for a shorter amount of time.  Once you are ready to drink, press the filter through your beverage from top to bottom and pour.  The grounds stay at the bottom. Enjoy your fresh made French Press coffee.  This coffee can be as personal and unique as you are so, experiment and find your favorite.  But be warned- this may be your new favorite coffee.  The coffee press by Trudeau is perfect for this and has superb quality as well as making 34oz.

Next up are some school lunch or work lunch necessities from Trudeau, FUEL. FUEL features a variety of innovations and “I need that” designs that set the line apart from traditional lunch box offerings such as; individual condiment containers, a salad bowl with built in dressing storage and ice pack, a multi compartmentalized Bento Box with removable insides, a vacuum sealed soup and food container with separate pieces to house crackers and chips, snap together cutlery, double walled hydration and beverage bottles, and so much more.

kids lunch

We had the pleasure of trying many of their items.  First up is the classic bag which has the feel and look of a classic lunch bag, but is reusable and insulated to keep cold stuff cold and hot stuff hot.  There is a velcro strip to keep your food in place as well.  The bag is tear resistant and stain resistant as well, so those spaghetti fall outs stay in place and are a breeze to clean up when you get home.  Snack pockets fit a variety of foods and are perfect for trail mix.  They are lined and tear resistant with a velcro at the top to keep food in its place.  The common theme of the FUEL products are that they are easy to use, reusable, and easy to clean.  The Snap cutlery set includes a fork and spoon which snap together for easy storage and the ability to keep them both in the same place without digging around for a fork when all you have is a spoon.  The stainless steel food jar can keep food cold or hot for up to 6 hours, is BPA free, and has a big wide mouth making it easy to eat from and fill up.  It is also easy to open when you want to and easy to keep closed while stowing it- less spills and messes in your lunchbox that way.  The Condiment Set includes three different colored containers great to hold salad dressings, condiments, sauces, dips, nuts, etc. Each with a 1.5 oz. capacity.  This is perfect for small snacks or little dips and such.  Perfect for camping and picnics or veges and dip for a work time snack.

George and Martha’s Morristown, NJ

morristown nj

If you are looking for a modern home cooked meal with a sophisticated yet delicious flavor profile, George and Martha’s is for you.

When we walked in, the first thing I noticed was the smell. Not food- it was a holiday smell, like Christmas trees and spice. It carried through the entire restaurant- not in an overpowering way, but subtle, a nice note.  The menu was cool (and the prices were reasonable, nothing crazy) with fun options, as well as interesting twists on traditional favorites.  Choices were varied, but everything we tried was better then average, with a few that were real standouts.

maple bacon

The first thing (and possibly the best) that we tried was the cornbread. Not just any cornbread, though this one has “Bourbon Maple Glaze, Served with Sweet Butter and Roasted Corn Jam”.  Right? It was as good as it sounds, and served warm. At 7$, worth every penny. My son wanted appetizers as his meal, and that was fine with me. He had calamari rings and a side of macaroni and cheese. He orders both of these often, and enjoyed both. Dad very much liked the calamari- because, of course, he had to try them out, and the mac and cheese was home made, smelled wonderful, and was ultra gooey.

george and marthas

My husband tried the burger of the day, which was blue cheese, caramelized onions, and bacon.  Since it was Sunday,  brunch was an option, and I had the chicken and waffles with a bacon syrup topping.  Everything was fantastic, and nothing would break the bank, either.

chicken waffles

Everything we ate was cooked perfectly, a harmony of flavors.  Crunchy fried chicken with smokey flavor of the bacon and the sweet of the syrup, mixed with the home made waffles.  The burger was to the desired wellness, with a good amount of blue cheese and bacon and the wonderful flavor of caramelized onions.  The  corn bread was a must, really- this dish might not sound like much, but will be a favorite,  and is a perfect way to start a meal at George and Martha’s.  A surprisingly delicious special item which will delight everyone who tries it.  This was pretty much the theme of the meal, each dish was unique and delicious, different and flavorful, exactly what we wanted and completely unexpected.  I would suggest George and Martha’s to just about anyone looking for a great spot to grab a bite to eat.

How to Travel and Still Advance Your Career

Going on an extended trip and exploring the world doesn’t have to mean putting the rest of your life on hold. A lot of avid travelers I know actually have a strong career or a successful business they run while traveling. Thanks to the internet and today’s best mobile devices, there are actually a lot of things you can do while traveling.

In this article, however, we’re going to talk about how you can still advance your career and enjoy an extended trip to amazing places. Here are a few things you can do to achieve this.

Rack Up Experiences

Just because you’re away, doesn’t mean you can’t still work. Some companies now allow employees to work from remote locations. If you happen to be working for a company or a startup that allows remote working, spending a few hours every day to catch up on work-related tasks can always be done no matter where you are.

You can also seek freelance projects or switch to an online job completely. These projects can be added to your CV – and your LinkedIn profile – which means you will be able to find a better position to fill when you get back thanks to the wealth of experiences you bring home.

Lastly, consider offering consultation services in a field you’re really good at. For example, you can consult for online businesses if you know your way around internet marketing and content creation. You can even use the trips you’re on as a selling point and produce awesome content along the way.

Pursue a Higher Degree

Another cool thing you can do while you’re away is pursue a higher degree. Thanks to distance learning programs from top universities, you can now get a master’s in various fields without actually attending physical classes or becoming a full time student. Online courses offer the same accredited degrees as their offline counterparts, which means you can take a program that suits you and be qualified for mid- to top-level management positions when you’re done.

Some degrees have more potential than the others. Be sure to check out the market and find degrees that are in high demand before choosing a course to take. The future for those with an online healthcare administration degree is particularly bright because the healthcare industry is one of the fastest growing today. Those with MBAs and other degrees will also find the market to be particularly promising.

Work Overseas

Of course, you can also enjoy relaxing weekends at exotic destinations when you work for a European or Asian company. Some US-based companies also have branches overseas, allowing you to apply for a lucrative position in great areas and have more opportunities to travel.

Working overseas may not mean being able to travel or relax every day, but it is still a nice compromise between exploring the world and boosting your career. Once you’re happy with the experiences you gather, you can relocate back home without having to start over with your career.

Don’t Put A Time Limit On Your Makeup: Help It Stay On For Longer With These Great Tips

Ever had that experience where you leave the house with amazing makeup – only to look in a mirror two hours later to find that it’s all but left your face? Yep, this has probably happened to all of us, and it doesn’t ever get less annoying. It can be incredibly disheartening to see your makeup wear off so quickly, especially if you spent ages on it or if you are at a big event. Our makeup can come off our faces for a number of reasons. It could be to do with the weather – wind and rain aren’t exactly a girl’s best friend when it comes to keeping their face intact. It could be to do with face touching or the wearing of glasses, or even wearing scarves around the face. Plus sometimes, it is simply down to the wearer having oily skin. So what exactly can you do if you suffer with makeup that just won’t stay on? Well, read on and try some of these techniques that can help your makeup stay with you well into the night – so you can party until dawn without a care in the world.

longer lasting makeup

Use primer

You may have heard of people using what is known as a primer under their makeup. These products have been used by professional makeup artists for years, but have only hit the highstreet in the past few years. Primers are essentially products which are applied before foundation or concealer and aim to make your makeup last longer. They are now available from many different brands and come in gel, cream and even powder form. In order to apply it, don’t be scared to use your fingers. Yes, we have all been relentlessly told to apply makeup with professional brushes and sponges ONLY. But in the case of primer, actually absorbs into the skin better when you use your hands, due to the generation of heat. There are also types of primer specifically designed for certain parts of the face, such as this base for NYX eyeshadow.

Use a setting spray

Ever clocked sight of yourself in the mirror before you left the house, and gave your face a quick mist of hairspray before leaving just to make sure that makeup stays on? Most of us have done the hairspray trick, as nasty as it is – and not only does it taste and feel awful, it doesn’t really work either! This is why makeup setting sprays were invented, which are essentially a sealing ‘top coat’ for your makeup. You can buy specific ones for various skin types and some even claim to hydrate your skin too.

Keep backup products in your bag

Unfortunately, there are going to be those times where no matter what we do, the makeup still comes off. For these moments, nothing else will do apart from reapplying the makeup that has already come off. But no one wants to cut their evening short by having to go home to re-apply. This is why carrying some mini makeup saviors on your person can be a lifesaver in times of need. You can often buy handbag-sized makeup these days, but most makeup in general will fit into the inside pocket of your bag. Bring only the essentials so you’re not too weighed down – for example, your 16 color eyeshadow palette probably doesn’t need to come with you. Foundation, powder, mascara and lipstick is all you really need, and you’ll be good to go all night.
