How Much Television Should Your Kids Be Allowed to Watch?

For children, watching too much television can be a double-edged sword. With staggering levels of childhood obesity and budget cuts at schools, that are effectively eliminating physical education classes, TV can only add to your children’s inactivity that cause these problems in the first place. Moreover, the more television your children watch will also expose them to commercials for unhealthy foods, further fueling the dilemma. This leaves many parents to the rescue, to set the necessary guidelines and boundaries as to how much time they can spend in front of the television. But how much television should your kids be allowed to watch?

limit tv timeMany doctors and researchers say that the amount of time your children are watching television should not be limited to only the TV. When you are trying to determine how much time they should be watching television you should also measure the time in front of other screens, like tablets, video games and personal computers. Many doctors say that children between the ages of 2 and 12 should only spend about 2 hours a day in from of any type of screen. They also say that children under 2 should not be allowed in from of any screen at all.

Simple and Effective Fitness Tips for Busy Moms

Until you become a mom yourself, you can’t know how much work goes into caring for children.
Even with a single child in the house you have a full-time job on your hands. And if you think waking up
every two hours to feed an infant is rough, just wait until you’re chasing a rambunctious toddler around
who is trying to climb everything in sight, stick foreign objects into sockets, and run off to explore every
dust mote when you’re not looking. Now double or triple that scenario and you can easily see why
moms get so harried. As a result, the average mom may have some trouble figuring out how to get in a
workout routine, whether she works, stays home, or works from home. But there are ways for even the
busiest moms to find time for fitness. Here are a few tips to help you get started.

You can probably agree that you have a list of priorities in place that goes something like this: family,
job, household maintenance/errands, and possibly sleep. Somehow you also manage to squeeze in
time with extended family and friends, and you still try to shower and make yourself presentable on a
daily basis (although some days it just ain’t happening). In other words, you devote your time to specific
purposes. So why can’t you square away some time for fitness? The [Read more…]

5 Tips for Building a Good Relationship With Your Child

Pediatricians are important figures in the lives of parents and children alike, and it’s important to build a good relationship with your child’s doctor. Children often need frequent medical attention, and parents have an equally urgent need for reassurance that their children are healthy. Build a strong relationship with your child’s pediatrician by following these helpful guidelines, and make parenthood the happiest time of your life.

  1. Know When to Worry
Understand that pediatricians hold a unique place in the world. They are the people who receive endless phone calls from panicking parents whose children are, more often than not, perfectly healthy. If you have minor concerns about your child’s health, call during your pediatrician’s preferred phone-in times or send an email. Reserve your emergency phone calls for actual emergencies, and your child’s pediatrician is certain to be appreciative. It’s natural to be concerned for your child, but try to remain level-headed at the same time.
  2. Be Specific About Symptoms
When you talk to your child’s doctor, be as specific and explicit as possible. General and vague descriptions are of no help to a doctor who is trying to diagnose your child. Keep track of symptoms and write them down if possible. Record fever temperatures. [Read more…]
