Another fun pumpkin option is the Hallmark Pumpkin Talker.  Available in Batman, Cinderella, and Scooby Doo, you use the template to carve a pumpkin that looks like your image of choice. When you’re done, put the Pumpkin Talker device into your carved jack-o-lantern to hear it talk in the character’s voice when it senses that someone is near.  We tried Scooby Doo, a favorite of my son’s.  It sounds just like the lovable dog from the show, and the template was very easy to use.

First up is the Pokedex Trainer kit. This product is great for your little trainer. It includes the finger-less glove, just like Ash. A Pokeball with belt clip so you are always ready for a battle, a two inch figure for mentioned Pokeball and the icing on the cake a Pokedex. This Pokedex carries small info cards which come with the two inch figures, and sport a moving Pokemon flicker animation, stats and a bright illustration of a Pokemon. The Pokedex also sports a card shuffler and slide open feature. All together this kit is great fun for little ones, all you need is a hat like Ash and you pretty much have a full on Ash Ketchum costume as well.

Why I Love My Neighborhood Toy Store

Whenever possible, I prefer to shop both locally and at non-big-box chains, as anyone who follows me on Foursquare already knows.  You get more personalized (and often better) customer service, a variety of toys you don’t always find in chains, and the quality of the merchandise that is available is often of a higher quality then you can find in larger chain stores.

One of our favorite toy stores, and one I have written about before, is The Learning Express of Montclair, NJ.  They have the nicest sales staff, really cool (and educational, fun) toys stocking the shelves, and never (not even once) have I bought a toy from them that broke within a year.  (The one that broke after a year was inflated much too  much by an enthusiastic 4 year old.)

Gift wrapping is available, the team that works there actually knows A- what products they have in stock, B- where to find them, and C- what to suggest if you need an idea or what you are talking about if you come in with a vague idea of what you are looking for and don’t know the actual name.  Imagine that!  An informed, caring staff.

Our local toy store also has nearly all of ASTRA’s Best Toys for Kids available.  Non-Profit organization ASTRA helps parents and people with kids in their lives easier by compiling a list of the year’s best toys that they can refer to, based on a panel of 650 expert judges.

Some of the included toys this year are (click here for the full list of toys)-

With as much as we travel, we are always looking for great kids DVDs that my son can watch in the plane or on extended road trips.  I’m not promoting letting your kids watch TV on the way to the grocery store- not in any way- but if you and the kids are going to be spending hours in the car, or plane, or airport- have at it!

Entertain Kids While Traveling

Classic kids stories are told on these DVDs, giving you peace of mind and your little one great entertainment- value for everyone.  If you are like me and are always off and about, pack these for your next trip.  Alternately, they are great for sick days when the little one is all day on the couch and you need a pick me up for them, or as a special treat to watch.

This latest installment in the nationally acclaimed, multi-award-winning Mo Willems DVD line from SCHOLASTIC STORYBOOK TREASURES features three animated adaptations of stories by the New York Times best-selling author: Don’t Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late; Knuffle Bunny Free: An Unexpected Diversion; and Edwina, the Dinosaur Who Didn’t Know She Was Extinct. Narrators for these stories include Cher Willems, John Scieszka and Mo Willems himself.

Shopping for Kids at Kohl’s

kids sneakers

When I shop for my son, I prefer to shop in person for his shoes.  I do about 50/50 shopping for him online and in stores, depending on where the sales are and where I can find what he needs.  One of my favorite places to shop is Kohl’s, which is good for both online and in store shopping.

Kids Sneakers

My son just had a growth spurt- of course, right after we had gone back to school shopping.  I kid you not.  So, we headed off to our local Kohl’s for some shopping.  He really needed new sneakers, so that was the first stop. There were tons to choose from, lots of styles, colors, and options.  He wanted to go with velcro, but I want him to learn to tie his shoes, so we found some with laces instead.
