Snowmobile Fun and Safety

There’s no doubt that snowmobiles are a fun and exhilarating winter sport, but along with the fun comes risk. Each year there are snowmobiling accidents and fatalities. In Minnesota alone, there were 212 accidents and 19 fatalities in 2011. A large number, over 70 percent, of these accidents involved alcohol. So how do you stay safe on the trails and enjoy playing in the snow? Keep reading for the essential do’s and don’ts of snowmobile safety.

DO check the condition of your equipment before heading out. A good checklist includes checking the throttle, belt, lights, brakes, skis, fuel and battery. If you have an emergency kit on the sled, make sure that it’s well-stocked with essentials such as a flashlight, flares and a first-aid kit.

DON’T combine snowmobiling with alcohol. As stated above, a large amount of snowmobiling accidents involve alcohol. An inebriated snowmobile driver has the same problems as a drunk driver on the roads, including impaired balance, reactions and concentration. Don’t just avoid alcohol yourself, but also avoid riding with those who have imbibed.

DO dress appropriately. Dressing for snowmobiling is not just about safety, but potentially also about survival. Wear plenty of layers to stay warm and dry. Always wear gloves, a helmet and goggles. Make sure the helmet is an approved DOT helmet. Gloves and goggles keep the elements out and increase safety.

DON’T ride too long and be cautious about riding at night. The longer you ride, the more your concentration dulls. The assault on the senses during snowmobiling tends to dull your concentration over a long period of time. Take breaks every few hours to keep it sharp. It’s generally not a good idea to snowmobile at night, but if you do, make sure not to overdrive your lights so you can see obstacles in plenty of time to avoid a collision.

DO stay on the trails if you’re participating in a snowmobile event (ex. a large race featured in Idaho Falls Magazine or some of the events Red Bull sponsors). There are two main reasons for staying on trails while snowmobiling. One is simply safety. The trails were made for a reason. The second is that trespassing tends to be a big complaint regarding snowmobiles and you could be ruining it for everyone else if you venture into private property. It’s also important to respect the wildlife and staying on the trails can help this.

DON’T ride on ice. In general it’s best to avoid frozen lakes and rivers, but if you do, make sure you’re prepared by wearing a life jacket over the rest of your clothing. Avoid ice with a visible current beneath it or nearby, as the ice is likely to be weak. However, be aware that it is impossible to tell how strong ice is just by looking at it. The best policy is to stay safe and avoid it entirely.

DO make sure someone else knows your plans. Have a contact that you call before leaving and call back when returning. Make sure they know what time without a call should be cause for concern. Make sure they also know your route. Another good reason to stay on the trails: if you’re in an accident, rescuers will know where to look.

DON’T be tense while riding. Keep your machine flexible by being loose and limber as you ride. When you turn, look in the direction you want to go and do it with your entire head. Use your lower body to guide the machine and not your arms.

Using these tips you can have a blast and still stay safe on the trails!

Create the Perfect Bedroom for Sleep and Relaxation

The bedroom is supposed to be a place of pure relaxation. It’s supposed to be a place you can get your head down, have a good sleep, and wake up feeling refreshed. You should go to your bedroom when you feel like relaxing; no other room should do! Unfortunately, there are so many people who don’t feel like this when they wake up in the morning. They feel groggy, and not ready to get up for the day ahead. This can be due to a number of different reasons, from what is kept in the room to the color of the room. A lot goes into creating the perfect bedroom! This guide will help you to create the perfect bedroom for sleep and relaxation:

Make Sure the Walls Don’t Stimulate You Too Much

The walls are the largest element of a bedroom. Depending on how you decorate them, they can either stimulate you or relax you. If you have exciting murals on the wall in technicolor, this could be the reason you aren’t sleeping as well as you could. Bright colors can be fun, but you should keep them to other rooms of the house! Even if you just have a bright color on the wall, this can stop you from sleeping as well. Make sure your walls aren’t too stimulating at night time.

Choose a Relaxing Color Scheme
In general, there are some color schemes that will relax you and others that won’t. You may have white walls, but if you have red elements all over your bedroom, you might feel more awake at night time. Cooler colors are the absolute best colors for relaxing and getting a good night’s sleep. Colors like blue and green are perfect. It’s up to you if you want to paint the entire walls, use wallpaper, or simply include accessories in cool colors to create the look you’re after. You can use a color wheel if you’re confused as to which colors look best together.

Keep Electrical Items Out of the Bedroom

Having electrical items in the bedroom really can disrupt sleep. You may have heard this one before, but it’s true! Having TVs, phones, tablets, and other distractions in the bedroom can make your brain associate the room with things other than sleep. Not to mention the light from these objects can disrupt the sleep pattern too. If you use them before bed, your melatonin levels will lower by up to 23%. You’re basically waking yourself up and disrupting your natural sleep pattern! If you struggle to sleep, you could listen to soft, relaxing music. Maybe read a physical book rather than an e-book on a bright screen.

Make Sure Your Bed is Suited to You

If your bed isn’t suited to you, then you can hardly expect to sleep soundly at night. If you sleep with a partner, then you may need to compromise a little. You might want to do a bit of research on the top mattresses for 2016 to start you off. Your mattress shouldn’t be too hard or too soft, as you can create back problems. However, what is soft to one person may feel hard to another, so bear that in mind. You should also make sure you have the right type of pillows and quilts to keep you just the right temperature.

Stay on Top of Bed Maintenance

Make sure you’re staying on top of maintenance when it comes to your bed. Some mattresses need flipping regularly, so make sure you keep to a schedule. Otherwise, you could end up flattening your mattress in all of the wrong places. Not only that, you should actually replace your mattress with a new one every 8 years. Don’t put it off, or you could begin to cause problems for your posture and spine. Even if you think your mattress is fine, you shouldn’t risk it if you’ve had it a long time.

Install Heavy Curtains
Heavy curtains will help you to keep the light from outside out. Every sleep expert is in agreement that you need total darkness to sleep soundly at night. You don’t want any distractions in the form of street lamps or something similar. You could even go for blackout blinds if you prefer.

Add Plants and Other Natural Elements

Having natural elements in the bedroom are thought to help people relax too. You can have plants, and even pictures of plants to help you wind down and relax. Any pictures or canvases that are of natural elements that you find relaxing can be included in your bedroom. Looking at these pictures should make you feel calm and ready to sleep! The art of feng shui recommends you avoid keeping actual life in your bedroom, so it’s up to you if you want a real plant in there or not. Most of the time, having pretty natural pictures should have the same effect. Some people think feng shui is a load of rubbish, but it actually makes a lot of sense when you think about some of the points it makes. For example, it says you shouldn’t have a mirror facing the bed as it bounces energy back to you.

Eliminate Clutter

Having clutter in the bedroom can make you feel uneasy and wide awake. Don’t put off getting rid of that clutter. As soon as you get the opportunity, tidy things up and get rid of the things you don’t need. Maybe put some of it into storage. Having lots of clutter around the bedroom is bad for your health, so don’t let it go on for too long. A minimalistic bedroom is best if you want a good night’s sleep.

Create Symmetry in the Room

Apparently, experts say that symmetry can create a peaceful feeling in the bedroom, allowing us to relax more. By making the effort to buy matching pairs where possible and create a symmetrical look, you could sleeping and relaxing better in no time at all. This isn’t always possible, so just do what you can to the room to make it look nice and even. Lay it out in a way that makes you feel nice and relaxed. Not necessarily the way other people think is best!

Get a Progressive Alarm

Instead of having an alarm clock that abruptly wakes you from your slumber, get a progressive alarm that gently wakes you up. You can buy alarm clocks that will stimulate a sunrise and sunset, helping you to wake up far more naturally than with a loud noise. It’ll be well worth the investment to have one of these on your bedside table. Just make sure you face the alarm enough away from you that if you wake in the night, you won’t spot the time. Looking at the time during the night is enough to kick you out of your sleep for a while. You should be able to drift back off fairly easily without looking at the time.

Use Warm Lighting

Warm lighting can help you to get into a more relaxed space, if you’re doing something that requires light in the bedroom. Maybe you want to settle down and read a book. Any form of blue lighting in the bedroom will keep you awake. Making sure the bulbs you use are warm will help you to get a better quality of sleep.

Use Scent to Relax You

Did you know that scent in the bedroom can relax you too? Scents such as lavender can make you drift off to the land of slumber much sooner. You can use candles and incense if you want to create a relaxing atmosphere, but they shouldn’t be used while you’re trying to sleep. If you want to use something while you sleep, a pillow or room spray is your best bet. Of course you can use other things to help you drift off, but pillow and room spray is one of the most natural solutions.

Lower the Temperature of the Room

The temperature of the bedroom can seriously make a difference to how well you sleep at night. Did you know that your body temperature needs to fall for you to drift off nicely? You can do this by lowering the temperature of the room, maybe crack a window slightly. You can even keep your feet out of the duvet, as some experts recommend. Although this has nothing to do with your bedroom, taking a hot bath before bed can lower your temperature nicely too.
All of these tips when used together will help you to create the perfect bedroom for sleep and relaxation. If you ignore any of them, don’t be surprised if you find it hard to drift off at night time. Use as many as you can as soon as possible and you’ll notice a huge difference in the quality of your sleep. Leave any tips that have worked for you in the comments if you like. Sleep well and I’ll see you soon!

A Guide to Developing a Healthy Body Image

Developing a healthy body image is really important. If you don’t make sure you love yourself and see yourself as a whole, you might start developing illnesses. Some people develop eating disorders, while some develop things like body dysmorphic syndrome. This can lead to things like excessive weight loss, muscle gain, weight gain, and more. The way we feel about ourselves is often down to many factors, including how we’ve been brought up and the things we’ve been brought up around. It’s never too late to develop a healthy body image, but the earlier you do it, the better. Here are some ideas to help you:

Make a List of Things You Like About Yourself

By making a list of things you like about yourself, you have something to focus on if you begin to feel down. Add to the list as often as you like, not matter how small or insignificant something may seem. Don’t worry about what you’re writing on there; nobody else is going to see it! You could say things like you love your long legs and delicate feet. You could say you love the shape of your eyes and how plump your lips are. You could say things like you love your skin tone and how your skin stays clear. You probably have so many more things you are grateful for than you realize! Start appreciating these things today. You more than likely have so many things that other people wish they had.

Don’t Focus on Specific Body Parts
When we look in the mirror, it’s easy to focus on specific body parts. For instance, a wobbly tummy or cellulite on the bum. Try your hardest not to focus on these parts! It won’t do you any good. Instead, see yourself as a whole person when you look in the mirror. That’s how other people see you. Nobody looks at the things you hate just as much as you do, and more than likely won’t even notice them! It can take some practice, but you’ll feel so much better when you start seeing yourself as a whole.

Treat Yourself

Treat yourself nicely. If you don’t, how can you expect anybody else to? Speak to yourself as you would a friend in your head. Stop telling yourself you’re not good enough! If you wouldn’t say it to a friend, avoid saying it altogether! You should also make the effort to regularly pamper yourself. You can take baths and do home facials. You can even schedule a monthly massage or manicure; something that makes you feel good about yourself! Why not? You deserve it!

Start Eating Properly

Eating properly is so important. You should never starve yourself or solely eat low calorie foods in an attempt to lose weight. This can mean you develop an unhealthy relationship with food. Stop using food to reward yourself or make yourself feel better too. Food is fuel! Learn how to cook yourself tasty, healthy meals full of vegetables. Eat when you’re hungry and stop when you’re full. When you begin eating like this, it’s unlikely you’ll ever experience problems with your weight.

Get Some Exercise

Make sure you get regular exercise, but don’t obsess over it. You should aim for at least twice a week if you’re just starting out, working up to maybe 4 times a week. You still need rest, so you shouldn’t overdo training. Rather than training for a specific aesthetic goal, train mostly for health reasons. Aim to run a little faster, lift a little heavier, and work on your endurance. You can even aim to lose body fat to get to a healthy weight, and reduce the risk of health problems. Work up a sweat a few times a week and you’ll feel so much better in so many aspects of your life.

Take the Media With a Pinch of Salt

In the media, we’ve always seen pictures of seemingly perfect women. But you must remember that these women have teams of professionals behind them to make them look like that. They have the right lighting, cameramen, and even people to tell them how to pose. All of that before they are actually photoshopped and ready to be put in the magazine! Aim to be the best version of yourself, and don’t let the media get you down.

Turn Negative Into Positives

If you perceive something as a negative now, do your best to turn it into a positive. How? For example, if you don’t like your big thighs, you could think about how you’re grateful for having strong legs. Everybody is unique and different and it’s things like that that make you, you!

Accept Compliments

Accept compliments rather than bat them away. When most people give compliments, they are being authentic and genuine. You should bask in the glow of a compliment and really appreciate it, because rest assured they mean it!

See a Doctor

If there’s a part of your body that you don’t like with good reason, maybe it is out of proportion or distracting, you could see a doctor to discuss your options. Belcarahealth.com/ could give you some great advice on what to do. Providing you have an otherwise healthy body image, then getting something that seriously affects your confidence sorted out shouldn’t be an issue.

Wear Clothes That Flatter Your Figure

Instead of wearing clothes that hide your figure, aim to wear clothes that flatter it instead. Learn all about your body type and shape and learn how to dress it to make you feel more comfortable. The clothes we wear can greatly influence the way we feel and act!

Realize Somebody Else’s Image Doesn’t Change Yours

You may look at somebody and see that they have a beautiful face or body. Don’t let yourself feel jealous of them or resent them. Instead, admire them. It’s OK to admire somebody else’s beauty without it taking away from your own. The fact that they are beautiful doesn’t make you any less beautiful! The more positive you can be about others, the more positive you can be about yourself too.
I hope this guide helps you on your way to a healthy body image!

Could Vegas Be Perfect For A Family Vacation?

What do you think of when you picture Vegas in your head? I imagine most people immediately form the image of gambling in their mind. A murky casino, filled with smoke and crowds of people bent over roulette wheels. Well, let’s cast that image aside right now. First, casinos in Vegas are nothing like that. They’re stunning with golden walls and beautiful designs that are a pleasure to spend your time in. However, that still doesn’t help when you’re thinking of somewhere to take your kids. Kids won’t be allowed on the casino floor. You might think that this makes Vegas a pretty awful choice for a family holiday. But you’d be wrong. There are lots of things you can do as a family in this massive playground.

pic1
See The Lights

If you’re staying in Vegas with your family, you need to go out and explore the city at night. Hire a limo and get chauffeured around dazzling displays of colour and wonder. The neon lights of Vegas will be like nothing you’ve ever seen before. You can even go and check out the Eiffel Tower. Or at least, the Vegas version of this famous monument. It’s just as impressive as the real deal. Every hotel has a different show and display so you could spend hours travelling around without getting bored.

Incredible Accommodation

If you have the cash, there is some truly incredible accommodation to stay in when visiting vegas. There’s a hotel that has a roller coaster built into its roof. Or how about an outdoor glass lift, similar to the one your kids might have seen in Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory. Vegas is a place where dreams come true, and they’ve certainly tried to give kids things to enjoy as well. In one hotel room, you can bowl a strike in your room. Yes, there is a room in Vegas with it’s own bowling alley. It will cost you a fortune to rent but would it be worth it? I think so.

See A Show

Not all the shows in Vegas are R rated. In fact there are quite a few that are perfect for the whole family. Don’t forget that this is the place where fame sensations come to wind down their career. Or just take a break. If you have a look at this site you can get Vegas tickets for Justin Bieber, Billy Idol or Celine Dion. There are shows for every generation, no matter how old your kids are.

Explore Outside The City

Don’t forget when you visit Vegas you’ll be nearby a number of other sites such as the Hoover dam. Take your kids to view this monumental man made achievement. If you head over there in the early hours of dawn, you’ll be in for a tremendous view not to be missed.
I hope you see now that Vegas isn’t just a place where adults can gamble their life savings. It could be the perfect destination for a fun family adventure that you’ll never forget.

Top Tips For Settling Into A New Home

There are few occasions in a person’s life which are more exciting than moving into a new home. This is cause for celebration, whoever you are! Whether you are moving in with others, it is an exciting time, and you should make the most of it. Yet, there are also a lot of different things to get sorted. Sometimes, it can be hard to keep track of it all. But that doesn’t mean that you need to become stressed. If you take things one step at a time, the entire process can become a joy! Have a look at these top tips for how to settle into your new home.

New Home, New Address

This is one of those jobs which are so little, but seem so big! It is amazing how long we can put something like this off for. But it is simple to change your address. The hardest part is remembering which people and institutions you need to tell. A good place to start is with the financial ones. Tell your bank first, so you can start receiving your statements again. While you’re at it, give the car insurance company a call and tell them, too. Otherwise, it may be invalid if you need to make a claim! After that, it’s only a matter of trying to remember to tell all your friends.

Security & Pest Control

Nobody wants the worst to happen, but unfortunately, it does happen to some. That’s why it’s a good idea to get your new place as secure as possible from the outset. It’s up to you how far to go with it. Some people will want to install a full-blown security system, and that is fine. It all depends on the area you have moved into and your own opinion. You also want to ensure that your new home is free of pests – click here for info.

Setting Up the Essentials

This is a great one to do in those idle moments between unpacking boxes. By essentials here, we mean things like getting your utilities sorted. It’s a good time to look into the particular situation in your new home. You need to find out, for example, what kind of energy the house uses, and who currently provides it. You then want to make sure you shop around – don’t just accept the provider without looking! There is a good chance you will find a better deal elsewhere. Particularly as a lot of energy companies have offers for new customers. All this needn’t be a big task – it’s just a case of looking online as you have a break from unpacking.

The Neighborhood
Last but not least: get to know your neighbors. Today, we are sometimes guilty of not being active within our local communities. For this reason alone, this is an imperative step. All it takes is to knock on a couple of doors and introduce yourself. While you’re at it, why not see if any local clubs or groups look interesting to you? Once you get involved in the local community, you start to feel right at home.

My Favorite Hacks For Cleaning Up After Your Kids

Like you, I’ve had my fair share of kiddie messes to clean up over the years. The more you have to clean up, the more you feel like preventing the kids having as much fun. I don’t want to be the Mom that stifled the kids’ creativity. I want them let loose, run riot and enjoy being kids. Kids are supposed to be messy. But I just don’t have time to clean endlessly. After all, I want to have fun with the kids too.

One of my favorite discoveries in the last few months has to be oilcloths. These are very thick, durable tablecloths that can cope with heat and mess without damage. I love that they come in so many gorgeous designs as well. You can get fun and colorful ones, or try one to better match your decor. The wipe clean so easy, and you don’t need to worry about table mats when you’re having a coffee.
A plastic mat on the floor under the table catches all those splashes and play-doh crumbs that make your floor a disaster zone. Whatever the kids are doing, something always ends up on the floor. It doesn’t matter whether you have carpets or tiles. An old plastic party tablecloth or messy play covering on the floor is ideal.

100_2440

I got rid of the carpets in the house years ago because of all the stains that I just couldn’t get rid of. They looked tatty and old and dirty all the time. Tiles and hardwood floors are much easier to keep clean. If you ask me what is the best vacuum cleaner to buy for hardwood floors, I would say that you should still choose power and maneuverability over cost. This ensures even the tiniest dust particles are removed every time from any floor.

Children love to play with messy things. It might only be water, but once they’re soaked, you have to get out yet another fresh set of clothing. Waterproof coverall aprons are ideal no matter what they’re doing. Just like the tablecloth or plastic floor mats, you can hang them on the washing line and hose them down to get them clean again. Best of all, there’s no need for spare sets of clothes.
When it comes to taking care of the floors, I know I have to be careful. The kids are always rolling around on the floor, playing with cars and blocks and things. Steam mopping is a must for me. There are no chemicals, and there’s no mop bucket to worry about. You just pour in some water, switch it on and go. Quick and easy and safe. I love it.

To be honest, though, I prefer keeping messy play playing in the garden when it’s a nice day. If the paints and clays they’re using are safe for the kids, I doubt they’ll do much harm to the lawn or flowers. There is far more space out there for them to have fun as well. I’ve got a lovely foldaway table they can take out there with a couple of matching chairs. It’s easy to wipe clean because it’s plastic. Then it all comes apart for easy storage in the cupboard or garage.

The kids love making dens. I don’t mind moving the furniture around a little to set the mood, or prop up the sheets! Of course, putting it all back and tidying up the sheets again is a bit of a bother. Folding sheets isn’t beyond even the smallest children, and it’s good practice for them to do it too. Moving the furniture is too much for the kids to do, but I take advantage of their new position by vacuuming the areas they usually sit on!

If you’ve ever wished you could just sit back and relax after you’ve got the kids to bed, then try out my easy hack for a tidy room. About twenty minutes before bath time, get the kids to pop their toys back into a toy box. You can use a plastic container instead. There’s no need to sort things or put items in lots of different places. But it can be more fun if you ask them to put all the red things in first. Or maybe you’re looking for all the toys that have wheels first! You can create a little song and have a factory line to pass the toys along to the box.

Big plastic containers for toys are so useful. You can select a few toys to go in each one. Then rotate which container comes out each day. Confining the play to just one tub of toys saves you clearing up and sorting out a huge mess later. You could pack the containers by category. Trains and cars in one, and blocks and books in another. But encourage the kids to put them all back before changing to the next tub.

Unusual Ways To Keep Your Home Toasty For The Rest Of The Winter

pic4

The winter is normally the worst time of year because it is cold. The weather changes dramatically, and staying warm becomes an issue. Houses are infamous for letting the weather conditions affect their temperature. Thankfully, you don’t need to shiver in silence any longer. All you have to do is follow these weird yet wonderful tips. If you do, your home will be toasty warm.

Enjoy!

Cover The Keyhole

The keyhole may look insignificant, but it is where heat displacement takes place. The little hole in the door is enough to let cold into your home that then mixes with the warm air. As the cold air is stronger, it overpowers the warm air. The result is that your home transforms into an igloo. All you have to do to stop it is block the keyhole with tin foil. In fact, any draft that you can feel needs blocking to stop the heat from dissipating.

Waterproof Your Property

The key to staying warm is to stay dry. And, you may think that is not hard, yet the reality is a lot different. Lots of properties are not properly waterproofed, and they are colder as a result. The moisture brings in the cold air, and the heat dissipates again leaving the house feeling colder. To stop it, waterproof the relevant parts of your property. If you are not sure what they are, the web page http://www.hydraway.net/uses/residential-waterproofing will provide more answers.

Swap The Blinds For Curtain

Blinds are not good at blocking heat because they are mainly wood or plastic. Both these materials are not great absorbers of heat, unlike fabric. Curtains are fabric, and the material is brilliant at stopping the heat from escaping. The particles get trapped in the thick layers and some rebound back into the house. Regardless, your home will benefit from thick, layered curtains over cold blinds.

Unblock The Windows

It may be winter, but the sun is still shining. You want to take advantage of the sun’s UV rays by keeping the windows clear during the day. This tactic may not seem like much, but it does work. And, it is also one of the most energy efficient tactics at your disposal. There is nothing better than a hack that warms the house and saves money.

Paint The Exterior

Painting the exterior is science at work. You know that dark, matte colors are better at conducting heat right? That means you want dark, matte colors on the outside of your home. The paint will absorb the heat straight into the house and instantly make it feel warmer. Although it takes a lot of effort, it is well worth it to keep the cold at bay. To find more about what colors absorb heat, check out https://www.colormatters.com/color-and-heat-absorption.

Get A Log Burner

Central heating systems are expensive, which is why you need a cheaper alternative. A log burner is that alternative. Not only does it burn wood, which is cheap, but it also gives off lots of heat. And, the heat will reach every room in the house if you keep it open.
