someplace you consider. Bursting with culture, history, different food and dining experiences, and tourist attractions

European Travel with Kids

The History
Whatever period in history your child is studying, or even if they are much too young to officially do so- they can do hands on, visual first person study. One can learn a lot from books, however- things tend to stay with you more so if one experiences things for themselves.
Visit Buckingham palace to see the place of kings and Queens that influenced our own country, watch the changing of the guards, and cross London Bridge to learn the history of it (or them). There are fantastic museums at most of the important historical locations, such as the Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam or the Acropolis Museum in Athens. Where will your journey take you?

The Art
Visits to Europe are a great way to have more in depth experiences with art and architecture, as many of the best galleries in the world are located in European cities. These include the Louvre in Paris, where the Mona Lisa is kept, and the Tate Modern in London where you can see works by many of the best modern artists including Monet and Anish Kapoor. However, you don’t need to limit yourself to museums to see great works of art- โ€“ cathedrals and churches house amazing works such as Michelangeloโ€™s paintings in the Sistine Chapel and on buildings such as the Parthenon in Greece, as well as stained glass marvels in the Notre Dame in France.

Turning Your Day Upside Down at WonderWorks #Florida #Travel

wonderworksLet your imagination run wild at WonderWorks, where there is something fun to do for any stage and any age. With over 100 hands on exhibits and attractions, you and your family will never be bored. This unique building is built to appear as though it is upside down, which has been an endless topic of conversation for my son. He was really confused, then intrigued by that. Inside, the walls appear to be broken and falling down around you, lighting is odd, and the whole building looks damaged as if by some tornado. Very interesting!

05 30 12 169One of the first things you may do when you get inside is take a spin in the โ€œinversion tunnelโ€ so that, once on the other side, you can spend time playing in this โ€œupside downโ€ building without landing on your head. (Note- while the floor doesnโ€™t really move, it FEELS like it does- and is in fact very dizzying, lol.)

Looking for a Truly All Inclusive Experience? Book a Trip to the Hard Rock Hotel in Cancun

Disclosure: I was invited to the Hard Rock Hotel resort and expenses were paid, but as always, all opinions are my own and honest. I was not required nor paid to write this review.

cancunA few weeks ago, I visited the beautiful Hard Rock Hotel in Cancun, Mexico. The beaches in Cancun are some of the best around, and it’s only a short flight for most Americans. Travel to Mexico is easy, flights are short, the food is good, and your dollar goes far. The Hard Rock Cancun was completely amazing- and truly all inclusive.

cancun mexicoAs I walked into the hotel, I was greeted with a most welcome frozen drink- it was quite warm outside, and after a very early flight from a very cold NY, and landing in a tropical paradise, the temperature change was something. Checking in with a cold drink in my hand was definitely a nice touch, and very thoughtful. The room I stayed in had two beds, a jacuzzi, and a double sink to make getting ready with a family easier and faster. The bathroom and shower were also in a separate room, so that one person could be showering while everyone else gets ready for dinner, the beach, or wherever you desire to go.

cancun-timetoplay As soon as I checked in, there were water bottles waiting for me in the room (as we all know not to drink the water in Mexico, our systems can’t handle it) and some fresh fruit was delivered- again, just little thoughtful touches. Also in the room was a small refrigerator that was full of soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, juice boxes, and more- all part of the all inclusive price of the room. This is also useful if you have a baby on formula or for storing breast milk. It’s super convenient not to have to run out of the room every time you or your little one is thirsty.

cancun-timetoplay 152Also- if you are traveling by yourself, with friends, as a couple and left the kids at home (or perhaps left the family pet with a sitter) you know you will be nervous and want to check in from time to time. Your phone may or may not work in Mexico- but one more perk of the Hard Rock Hotel is that phone calls and internet are both included- make as many phone calls as you like, you won’t be charged extra fees. There are many hotels that claim to be all inclusive- this is the first where I truly wasn’t asked to spend money for extras like phone calls, internet, and even cans of soda or a mini bar in the room. Want room service at 2 am? Go ahead- call and order. It’s part of the package.

cancun-timetoplay 042Super thoughtful extras, like sunblock and even aloe, are available by the pool just in case some traveler forgot to bring theirs. Which from what I saw, many did, and made use of this basket. It was located by the towels, which you get fresh and clean as often as you need to.

cancun-timetoplay 100The resort is directly on the beach, which any parent will tell you is a huge plus. No need to lug all your gear and toys all up and down, just a few steps to the sand. If you like, there are lounge chairs and umbrellas right on the beach, set up and waiting for you. You can also rent cabanas for the day. If you prefer to lounge by the pool, this one won’t leave you wanting. There are plenty of lounge chairs and umbrellas situated all about the pools, as well as two swim up bars that have both alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages. There are several buffets with food all day and night long poolside, with tables and chairs to eat at as well if you prefer to just grab a quick poolside bite for lunch rather then go to one of the resort’s restaurants.

cancun-timetoplay 049When you are at the pool, there is always music playing, but often there is live music playing. Live bands, including former American Idol contestant Casey James, play regularly at the Hard Rock Hotel. There is a real party atmosphere to the place, while not being anywhere near out of control or frenzied. It’s just a laid back, fun, party place to be. The [Read more…]

Why You Should Want To #VisitLancaster

When itโ€™s time to get away, scenic Lancaster, PA is one of our favorite places to go. There is plenty to do, see, and eat in this family friendly environment. Here are some great places to visit in Lancaster, one of our favorite places to spend time as a family (and sure to be one of yours, as well).

lancaster PAThe Strasburg Railroad is the home to many restored trains from around the USA. Many train fanatics call this site the best historic railroad in America for visitors, and for good reason. Recognized as one of the most significant historic railroads in the USA, the Strasburg Railroad has acquired historic trains from all over the country, and recently celebrated operating for 50 years as a tourist railroad It is one of the remaining stations where you and your family can ride the refurbished trains and steam engines. This station is large, restored, and maintained beautifully- a source of pride for the local people.

strasburg railroadEvery time we visit, we truly sense the enjoyment that the conductors and employees have for their jobs- it shines though as they take their time with every child, posing for photos and answering train trivia with a smile. As you ride the beautifully restored trains through Amish country, learning about steam railroading, agriculture, Amish culture and Pennsylvania Dutch heritage, enjoy your family and your little ones, and let worries slip away. They are little for only so long, and riding in a โ€œrealโ€ train is going to be a real delight. There was a “vintage baseball” game being played while we visited last weekend, where olde-time dressed players used old rules, terms, and equipments to play the game. It was very enjoyable to watch, and their wives came in full period clothing as well. There are other special events going on regularly at the Strasburg railroad. Check out the calendar and plan for your favorites.

pic 3Strasburg Rail Road is pleased to offer an all-new Summer Fun Pass, a value-packed ticket option for individuals and families who want more bang for their buck! The Summer Fun Pass is valid from May 25 โ€“ September 2 and includes unlimited steam train and fun extra rides.

At just $35 per person for ages 3 and older, this pass will pay for itself in just three visits, one of the best offerings from Lancaster County attractions. [Read more…]

Meet Me at @SesamePlace #ThemePark

One of my son’s highlights has been his recent trip to Sesame Place in Buck’s County, PA. I grew up with Sesame Street, and as a teacher I love the educational, social, and cultural values it helps to instill. As a parent- I love it, too! There are versions of Sesame Street all over the world- from Russia to Mexico. Something about knowing that this sweet, educational show unites kids globally (literally) really touches me- and even more so now that I myself am a mom, teacher, and travel enthusiast. You can’t see the world until you go out and experience it- start young, and make a little global citizen. But I digress!

We had so much fun at the theme park, there are all sorts of fun rides- and for once, they are ALL aimed at little ones.

Late spring and early summer are the times of year when families making preparations to take vacations together. And while it can be great to go to cities that have amusement parks or to take a cross-country road trip in an RV, when you have children that are elementary school age, it can also be a good idea to take them on a vacation that can be as educational as it is entertaining.

educational travelIf you’re in the midst of planning your next trip and you’d like a few ideas on some educational vacation destinations to visit, we have five that both you and your kids will enjoy going to this year:

Experience Music Project/Science Fiction Museum (Seattle, Washington). If you live around the West Coast, then you might want to take a trip to a place that has become all the rage among museum lovers. There are artifacts from artists like the Beatles and Nirvana, kids are able to play instruments at the Spin Kids Station and in the Sound Lab, they can even record their own mini-CD. Enjoy a Stay on Florida’s Beautiful Panhandle #HiltonSandestinMoms

Disclosure: My son and I were invited to the to Hilton Sandestin resort and expenses were paid, but as always, all opinions are my own and honest. I was not required nor paid to write this review.

florida hiltonA few weeks ago, my 5 year old and I paid a visit the Hilton Sandestin in Destin, Florida. Located on the Emerald Coast of Florida, on the panhandle, this is a great hotel to check out if you are looking to spend some time with the family. Escaping the cold here in NJ, we were thrilled to reach the beautiful beaches of the Florida coast, where the images we had seen on the website did not do any justice. (There were also sliding glass doors in every room leading to a balcony outside- the views for sunrise and sunset were lovely.)

Upon walking into the room, we were immediately met with something that my son just adores- bunk beds! The top bunk is designed with safety in mind, having a build in safety bar (so there will not be any late-night roll offs onto the floor). Right away, I knew the room and resort would be kid friendly, and my son felt at home and at ease. There is a TV in that area of the room, should you want your children to be able to watch some cartoons at the end of the day while you watch your show in the other area (or unpack, read, check email, send photos, etc). That little bit of separation can be life-saving on family vacations, when at times the family makes you want to tear your hair out. A little space can let everyone breathe and be alone for just a few moments. Also in the room were a small refrigerator and microwave, which again adds convenience for the little things, or if you have a baby on formula or for storing breast milk.

bunk bedsAnother saving idea is the bathroom- which has the full barrage of what you would expect in a bathroom. The tub was also very clean- and most of you know how I feel about hotel tubs ๐Ÿ™‚ But outside the bathroom door was a second sink and mirror, which is great for families who are all getting ready at the same time. Several people can get ready at once, brush teeth, do hair, go to the potty, take a shower, blow dry their hair- whatever works for them at that time. This is a real time saver and great idea. There is a blow dryer attached to the wall as well for your convenience.

If you prefer, you can also rent beach chairs and umbrellas from the resort (which they will set up for you) or you can bring your own. There are also several pools to choose from outside, another inside- as well as a hot tub both outdoor and another indoors.
