Frugal is Beautiful:Tips for Weddings on a Budget

Your wedding is one of the most important events in your life – but it certainly doesn’t have to be the most expensive. These days, the average cost of a wedding in the United States is $25,656. If that number induces more stress than the thought of holidays with your future in-laws, don’t fret: you don’t have to pay anywhere near that amount to have a beautiful ceremony and reception. If you budget wisely, you can make a frugal wedding a truly memorable event. Here are 7 tips for weddings on a budget.

Start comparison shopping. Create a chart to make comparing features and prices offered by the various venues easier. For example, one company might not include the cake while another may skip the linens. Keep track of all the candidates and choose the one who offers your favorite amenities for a price that most closely matches your budget. (Of course, there’s something to be said for choosing a company or person who makes you comfortable and understands your needs – even if they’re not the least expensive option, they’ll save you stress and time in the long run!)

Most places will offer different levels of packages for your event,” explains Brandon Walker, the event manager at of Oklahoma event center Credit Union House. “The trick is to ask a representative to show you all of the available packages – then weigh those against other companies’ offerings.”

Travel to an inexpensive but scenic location. Weddings are generally less expensive in rural areas as compared to urban ones. And while you might think of a destination wedding as a huge economic burden, you’ll probably end up with a smaller guest list – so the overall cost will be lower than if you held the ceremony in your hometown. Go far enough away that only the most devoted loved ones (and your most well-off friends!) will attend. You may want to invite everyone from your co-workers to the mailman, but paying for a small wedding party is infinitely cheaper – even if you have to invest in travel arrangements.

Go public. Many beautiful parks and other public spaces allow weddings and other events for a small fee. Look into aquariums, zoos, galleries and historic sites, as these locations come already equipped with a distinctive ambiance and theme. Most will not include tables, chairs or other necessities, so you will need to make room in the budget for rentals. Contact your local school, church, or community organizations to find out if you can rent tables and chairs – or even borrow them free of charge.

Tips For Hosting A Male-Friendly Baby Shower

Men at a baby shower? Why not!

The co-ed baby shower is becoming a more common event, perfectly in keeping with changing times and parenting roles. The increasing number of men who now stay home to look after baby while Mum returns to work is a stark example of how times have changed; and the rituals surrounding an impending birth have started to change with them. So, if you believe a ‘His ‘n Hers’ baby shower best suits your circumstances, and best reflects your attitude to pregnancy, go right ahead and do it. By following a few tips your baby shower with a difference will be enjoyed by Jack as well as Jill!

Round Up Other Men

Being the only man at a baby shower will probably dent his masculine pride and make him feel just a tad awkward, so enlist the help of your friends and tell them to bring their partners as well. The menfolk may not wish to participate in all the activities but as long as there are other guys there to talk sport etc with, all should be well. Speaking of which, it’s best not to schedule your shower to coincide with a major sporting event unless, of course, you’re happy to have the TV on in the background!

Also, make sure your invites are gender non-specific – go easy on the florals, flounces, and love hearts – and inclusive of him and her.

Unisex Entertainment….

Parlor games used to be a big part of the ladies only baby shower but they might not be to the taste of all your guests at a co-ed baby shower. Games with broader appeal might include ‘build a baby’ competitions (making a baby out of Play Doh, common craft items etc) diaper changing competitions (on a doll, of course), a baby bottle drinking competition to see who can drink a bottle of juice (or beer to make it particularly man-tastic!) in the fastest time, or an assembly competition to determine who can put together a baby’s toy in world record time!

“Frozen” audiences are invited to join the act—literally—as more than 1000 theaters nationwide introduce an all-new sing-along version of Disney’s Oscar®-nominated, Golden Globe®-winning big-screen adventure beginning Jan. 31, 2014.

“‘Frozen’ fans have embraced the film’s original songs and its soundtrack with such passion—there are countless YouTube videos from people singing songs like ‘Let It Go’—we decided to create a version that would celebrate that enthusiasm,” said Dave Hollis, executive vice president, theatrical distribution, The Walt Disney Studios. “It’s a great opportunity for families to get together and have some fun with these songs.”

According to Hollis, on-screen lyrics and a magical bouncing snowflake will accompany select showings; moviegoers can check local listings for showtimes and theaters. The duration of the sing-along run will vary by theater.

Transformers Rescue Bots Beam Box

There is a surge of video game themed toys recently.  Not only are they video game themed but they take your toy and bring them into the game.  Some examples are Skylanders and Disney Infinity.  Hasbro has joined the fray with Transformers Rescue Bots Beam Box.  This new game/toy is meant for the younger crowd but is still fun and will keep everyone entertained.

pic 1Rescue Bots are one of the newest lines of Transformers.  These robots go around helping people who are in need in more real life emergency settings.  Think more along the lines of firemen and police then laser and space ships.  The Beam Box takes this theme and expands upon it making it more interactive.  The unit comes with a controller and one figure, Optimus Prime. When put inside the system Optimus is your main character in the game.  There are five games to play as Optimus, all of which are easy to control and have simple control schemes.  These games are meant for 3 to 7 year olds so do not expect any deep story or difficult to master gaming techniques, just fun little games for the little ones.  These are prefect for little ones who are tired of watching their older brothers and sisters playing video games with their toys and can’t join in because of either a lack of video game skill or a lack of a system to play on.  The interesting thing with the Beam Box is, with every new figure you buy a new game is available and the current character can be used in the five base games as well.  An example of this is the Heatwave figure.  Heatwave can be played in either the Fire Alarm Frenzy Chase game  or one of the five Optimus can be played in .

Ideas for “Frozen” Valentine’s Dates

While none of us probably wants to think that this awful polar vortex could still be felt as far in the future as mid-February, it is possible. That means those making Valentine’s Day plans have to plan for the snow and ice.

Here are a few Valentine’s Day date ideas, inside and outside, perfect for this polar winter.

what to do on valentines day

Valentine’s Day Date Ideas

Outside

Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean you and your sweetheart are stuck indoors. Try some of these outdoor date ideas if it’s safe to go outside where you’ll be:

  • Is there a local ice rink or safe-for-skating pond nearby? Rent some skates and glide arm in arm over the ice with your sweetie. If you trip and fall over each other, that’s adorable too. Either way, share some hot chocolate afterward.
  • Take advantage of the snow and make an igloo! You certainly have enough snow, so construct an igloo in your backyard using ice cream tubs or large Tupperware to shape snow blocks. Then have picnic of hot soup and other warming food inside the igloo (Eskimo kisses encouraged).
  • Or, if you and your date are creative, why not try your hand at snow sculptures? Sculpt animals, sculpt each other, play snow-sculpture Pictionary. Bonus points if you take pictures or if there are professional ice sculptures to view afterward.
  • This Valentine’s Day is a full moon, so take some soup or hot chocolate, your honey, some tarps, and go stargazing together under the moonlight. Don’t forget a pile of blankets to sit in on top of the tarp to keep warm!
