Three mistakes parents can make when it comes to early childhood education

It’s natural for a parent to want the best for their child. A big part of this is making sure they get the education they need. These days more and more emphasis is placed on the importance of early childhood education when it comes to helping a child navigate successfully through their school career. The question is, what mistakes could you be making as a parent, when it comes to the early childhood education of your child?

If you want your child to have the best start then one of the best places for them to get this is in a center for child development. Your child can get expert help, from trained professionals, to enable them to develop their skills and confidence. That’s not all there is to it though. Parental involvement is also a very important feature of early childhood education. The problem is that parents can make mistakes; we are going to take a look at three common ones.

Living through your child

You need to remember that your child is not you and they never will be. You should not expect them to do things in life just because you want them to. You should also not expect them to be good at something just because you were as a child. Early childhood education is partly about helping your child to learn what they are good at and assisting them to develop that skill. This is not going to happen effectively if you are constantly trying to mould your child into being a mini you.

Emphasizing academics

Academics can be very important but they are not the be all and end all; especially not when your child is very young. If you start trying to push academics at your child too soon then you run the risk of putting them off altogether. They could feel overwhelmed. There is also the chance that your child is just not an academic type of person, and they should never be made to feel inadequate because of that. Early childhood education is all about developing your child’s confidence and cognitive skills so that they are more able to deal with the potential academic and lifestyle challenges that lie ahead.

Being over protective

It’s a natural instinct of a parent to be protective. The problem is that some parents have a tendency to be over protective. You may be wondering what this has to do with education but the truth is that a considerable amount of your child’s learning comes from them making mistakes in life. If you are constantly overseeing what your child does and helping them to avoid mistakes, they are not going to learn useful lessons. Obviously, you have to keep an eye on your child, but even young children need to have some level of freedom and responsibility.

All three of these mistakes are commonly made by parents. They are not usually made deliberately but they can be damaging to a child. Think about it, are you making any of these mistakes right now?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Out of the Shadows Technodrome

Disclosure- The below was sent to me in order to facilitate this review.  All opinions are my own and honest.

20160606_180734

The “heroes in a half shell” are back and ready to save the world once more.  This time, they must face one of their most fearsome foes, Kraang.  Kraang is an alien brain in a high tech android body, and if that wasn’t enough of a challenge- he also has the technodrome.  The technodrome is a rolling sphere of a death in machine form, meant to destroy everything in the city.  As such, it is the Turtles job to defeat Kraang and his new fearsome vehicle.  Your kids can also help in the fight against Kraang with the new Technodrome play set.  This toy is a beast- it opens up to over two feet wide and is full of secrets, like trap doors, slides, and even a jail.

20160606_180848

It has missiles which fire and wheels which let it roll around.  It is the perfect play set to reenact Ninja Turtle fun from the new movie.  The technodrome is torn straight from the new movie, and has tons of details and a secret entrance.  The little guy loves Ninja Turtles, and this new play set is no different.  He loves having a huge place for his turtles to fight.  The play set is proportional to the 2.5 inch figures, and when you are done playing with it, it can even act as storage for your figures and their weapons.  The only thing to keep in mind while picking this huge play set up is there are no figures included.  This is always a bummer for kids, and my son is no exception- especially if you don’t have any.  Be sure either your little one has figures at home or to grab some while you are out to avoid sad kiddos.  There are many figures to choose from, both good guys and bad guys are available.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Out of the Shadows Technodrome playset is available now and retails for $49.99.  It is recommended for children aged 4 and up.

Mario Tennis Ultra Smash for WiiU

Mario Tennis has been an evolving franchise since the Nintendo 64 and with each iteration the game gets prettier with slicker graphics and tighter game play as well as a few bells and whistles.  Mario Tennis Ultra Smash is the newest iteration in the series.

pic7

The most prominent addition the Ultra Smash is the Mega Mushroom, which makes your character explode in size to tower over everything (at least triple your original size).  This can be both a blessing or a curse depending on how good you are in the game.  On the plus side, your character can really smash the ball, but on the minus side, you see a lot less court because of your size.  There are a total of 16 characters available in Ultra Smash some of which are unlocked through playing the game and completing specific tasks.  The game also sports the ability to level up your Amiibo to the best tennis partner ever, improving both their stats and giving them new skills.  In our house sports games are difficult to get into, but Mario Tennis has the fun pick and play game style while still being deep enough to get good at and trounce your friends.

Mario Tennis Ultra Smash is available now for the WiiU from both retail stores and in the eShop.  The game retails for $49.99.

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016

What if there was a way to skip years of hard work and practice and actually play in the Olympics.  Iinstead of the incredibly talented athletes actually competing, you get to actually play as some of your favorite video game characters like Sonic the Hedgehog and Mario.  Sounds good, no?

pic3

Well, your dream have come true Mario and Sonic At the Rio 2016 Olympics Games lets you live out your Olympic dreams.  In the proud tradition of Mario and Sonic Olympic games, this game features tons of events, a total of 14, ranging from table tennis, to BMX, hurdles, Golf and even football, which we call in the states soccer.  Each event features different characters to pick from and has different game mechanics to play all of which take advantage of the 3DS’s many features like its gyro, touch screen and of course careful button mashing.  Of the events featured you can rest assured each is fun and well put together with easy to pick up and play arcade controls.  The favorite in our house is definitely boxing- there is nothing quite as entertaining as controlling a punching Donkey Kong.

pic4

There is also a training mode, “Road to Rio”, where you pick which gym to train in Sonic or Mario and work through a story line and level up your Mii. You get to unlock outfits and character suits as well.  In addition to single player, there is also a multiplayer function via download play for up to 4 people to compete with one copy of the game, players can pick either a single event or a mix of a few events to see who comes out on top.  The pedometer function of the 3DS is also used with this game where you can walk a virtual marathon.  Each step not only getting you out and about but also unlocking prizes in game as well.  Amiibo’s can also be used once a day to power up your Mii and give you that slight edge that can br the difference before first and second.

Mario and Sonic At the Rio 2016 Olympics Games is available now for the 3DS as stores everywhere and online at the eShop, for $39.99.

When you were a kid it was easy to spend time in nature. Today it can seem hard to break free and get out there to share that same experience with your kids. But it’s worth it — and nature is closer than you think.

The US Forest Service’s campaign “Discover the Forest” wants to encourage you to enjoy the great outdoors on National Get Outdoors Day on Saturday, June 11th and all summer long.

National Get Outdoors Day will include a series of events offering traditional and nontraditional outdoor activities across the nation. Events may include special guests like Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl and free admissions to our national forests so families can experience activities like fishing, canoeing, kayaking, rock climbing, hiking, biking, horseback riding and archery.

The Discover the Forest Campaign aims to encourage parents and caregivers to take their families out to the forest to experience and re-connect with nature and also engender a love for nature in kids by fostering a connection with urban and national forests, ultimately creating a lifelong interest and a legacy of stewardship through first-hand experience.

  1. Join #ForestChat with @DiscoverForest on Friday, June 10th at 1pm ET to spread the word about National Get Outdoors Day, using #ForestFriday and #DiscovertheForest.
  1. Participate in our Discover the Forest Photo Scavenger Hunt. Starting Saturday, June 11th and running for several weeks, Discover the Forest will post a creative photo of the forest and ask followers to replicate the photo with their family and participate using #Getoutdoors16. Promote on your social channels by posting the attached social graphics and even participate yourself!
  1. Participate in #ForestFotog on Instagram: Share your beautiful forest photos and nature quotes on social media. If you share with the hashtag #ForestFotog, we will share your content with our communities as well.

Nature is closer than you think. Every neighborhood has a #Naturehood. To find a neighborhood park or green space near you, visit DiscoverTheForest.org. These “naturehoods” are just a short-drive away, making it easy for families to unplug from the daily routine and reconnect with nature.

Populations have shifted away from rural settings to metropolitan areas, with over 80% of Americans living in cities, and with fewer connections than ever to natural areas. The campaign highlighted that urban forests offer many of the same benefits as national forests, but they’re right in the neighborhood. Beyond the swings, slides and clearings, there are trails, trees, wildlife and water just waiting for the urban dweller.

Research has shown that children who play outside have lower stress levels and more active imaginations, become fitter and leaner, develop stronger immune systems and are more likely to become environmentally conscious in the future. According to campaign research done by Euro RSCG, 88 percent of children today say they like being in nature, and 79 percent wish they could spend more time there.

DiscoverTheForest.org features an interactive map tool that enables users to search for nearby forests and parks, and filter by zip code and desired activities. Free outdoor activities are also available for download and printing, which you can take the next time you visit.
