Valentines Day Gifts for the Kids

Valentine’s Day is no longer a day just for your significant other- many people give gifts to parents, close friends, and children as well.  I know that I give gifts to my son, and I cherish the ones he gives me. (Of course, we wear our glitter-pasta necklaces with pride, don’t we?)  If you are still looking for the perfect gift for your little prince or princess, here are some ideas.

pic4If you have a game enthusiast, check out Skylander’s new limited edition Love Potion Pop Fizz.  Just in time for Valentine’s day, and nothing “mushy” or “sweet” about this fella, who throws vials of strange substances instead of shooting a cupid’s arrow. Your gamer will love this new addition to his collection.  While he will be somewhat rare, he is not yet hard to find- you can find him on Amazon, Target, Walmart, and stores like Game Stop at this time.  Prices vary, starting at about $10 and up.

If your Valentine is a little younger, Cloud b has a variety of sweet toys that they will love to snuggle up with.  A well rested sweetheart being the best kind, Cloud b helps encourage sleep with it’s line of creative nightlights and bedtime toys. One of our personal favorites is the Glow Cuddles Bear, which is not only adorable, but very soft.  It has a glowing heart light in it’s chest that is activated by a hug, which is comforting not only because of it’s soft light, but also because of it’s gentle, calming “beating” that helps lull little ones to sleep.  It has 2 sleep timer options, 10 minute timer on the sound feature, 23 minute timer on the soft glow.  Good for all ages as it has sewn-on facial features and no small parts. It requires 3 AA batteries which are included, and retails for $35.95 on http://cloudb.com.

Review and Giveaway- Little Gestalten Books

There are seemingly no end to the good reasons that parents should read to their children, not the least of which is the simple act of bonding time. I read with my son all the time, but he knows that as part of his bed time ritual, he gets his song, his story, his “made up” story, and then we have to put good dreams into his head.  It’s kind of a long story how that came about, and bedtime starts about 40 minutes before actual bedtime, but it’s a nice way to end the night.

We are always looking for great new books.  We find them everywhere- the bookstore, the library, book sales at his school book swaps- you name it.  His newest books are really beautiful, and something a little different.  If you are a big reader, and have little ones who love to read (or to be read to), you will want to check out the new Berlin-based children’s book publisher Little Gestalten and their debut line of beautiful, high concept, totally unique picture books. Critically acclaimed, The New York Times Style Section says “Little Gestalten….marries thoughtful storytelling with supercool visuals.”

pic7Issun Boshi: The One Inch Boy – This classic Japanese fairy tale tells the story of Issun Boshi, the tiny son of an old, long childless couple. His mother had longed to have a child for so many years that she finally added “even if it is a very small one” to her wish. When the elderly couple did in fact bear a son, he turned out to be only one inch high. He was thus called Issun Boshi, Japanese for one-inch boy. Tiny and brave — these are the two most striking characteristics of Issun Boshi. Although his parents raised him very lovingly, Issun Boshi realized one day that he would not grow any taller. He then left his home to set off on a journey to find his place in the world.

Winter Snow Fun

P1020798With the snow that’s pounding down on much of the country lately, you and your little ones have likely been outside in your snow-gear quite a bit lately. According to the weather man, this is not likely to change anytime soon, so you might want to add IDEAL Mini Sno-Markers by Alex Brands to your cold-weather arsenalThese fun snow “markers” come in sets of 5 colors that you just add water to in order for them to work. Add color, water, shake, and you are ready to create your snow-masterpiece.  In personal experiance, you can’t “color” on the snow as with a marker, but it more drizzles out.  My son had a great time experimenting with this, making a multi-colored snowman and some “snow-cave” drawings.  Cap the markers when you are done and save them for the next storm.  It also comes with an extra set of each color packet so you can use them all winter long.

We love to listen to great music in this house. The girls go to dance class, play group, and many other places that hit songs are being played. They love the songs, but I don’t always love what they are about and what is said in the songs. I love Kidz Bop CD‘s. I was very excited to be able to try out the new one!

Disney on Ice Presents Princesses & Heroes

pic5

Last night, we had the opportunity to see the latest Disney On Ice show, Disney on Ice Presents Princesses & Heroes.  While it was fairly heavy on the princesses and light on the heros, the kids seemed to like it (the girls more so then the boys).  There was a pretty cool scene from Sleeping Beauty where Prince Phillip fights the evil Maleficent in her dragon form that many of the kids liked, and was my son’s favorite part of the show- the dragon was large, fluorescent, and breathed smoke and fire as it chased the prince around the ice. Once slayed by the virtuous prince, the slumbering princess could be rescued.  (Note- warn the little kids ahead of time, some of the smaller ones were scared of the dragon and the noise.)

My son was hoping for Mulan (battle scenes!) or Peter Pan, but the dragon was fun.  Little miss “Aurora”  however loved every minute of the princess-fest, as did the other princesses in the audience (many of whom also came dressed as thier favorite princess.)  Of course, the audience EXPLODED when the sisters of “Frozen” skated onto the ice- or, more aptly, as soon as they heard the music being played, before you could even see the scenery that was up, lol.  Most of the second half of the show was dedicated to “Frozen”, which was just fine with most of the people there, from what I could see.  The other princess and heroes that were in attendance included Aladdin and Jasmine, Cinderella and Charming, Rapunzel and Flynn, Belle (sans Beast, though they did a great “Be Our Guest” number with Lumiere and kitchenware) Snow White and Charming, and Ariel and Prince Eric.  The Little Mermaid portion is also a fun portion for both boys and girls, since Sebastien the Crab and Flounder play prominently- and the music is a lot of fun, with much of the cast of skaters participating in the show at that time. There is a lot to see and it’s very visually stimulating- the “Under the Sea” portion is enjoyable for a lot of reasons; it’s lively, the music is very upbeat, spirited, and has a very different sound then many other songs, and there are so many cast members skating in vibrant costumes and colors.  It also opens with the cast of sailors doing tricks and flips, which is fun and something unique from the rest of the show- there is even a sailor that flips into a chair held above the rest of the “crew”- very neat!

How to Prepare Your Child for Sleep-Away Camp

Whether your school offers some kind of outdoor education week where all the kids in a class go to a nearby camp for a few days, or you are the type of parent that likes to send kids to summer camp every year, eventually you’ll need to think about how you can best prepare the tots in your household for sleeping somewhere other than in the familiar comforts of their bedroom at home. Even if it’s only for a few days, kids can get understandably anxious when their routines are disrupted and they find themselves out of their element. As a parent, it’s your duty to remove as much stress from the situation as possible. But how do you make that happen? Here are a few tips to prepare your child for his time at sleep-away camp.

One issue that many parents deal with is separation anxiety. While most kids overcome the desire to stay home with a parent at a young age thanks to inclusion in daycare or school, your child may not be entirely comfortable with the prospect of being away from home overnight, much less for several days. The best way, then, to prepare your child for this eventuality is by making sure he participates in sleepovers with friends leading up to sleep-away camp. When he stays with a friend close to home, there is an inherent safety net – you can always pick him up if he gets too anxious. This will help him to ease into the prospect of being away from home. And then you can explain that sleep-away camp is just like any other sleepover and that he’ll have just as much fun.
