Top 5 Tips for Introducing Technology to Kids
The modern age is a challenging time to raise your kids. It’s no use getting into one of those grumpy “back in the day” conversations, because we all know that despite all the difficulties 2012 is a pretty amazing time to be alive. Technology has brought a lot of value to our lives, and with computers becoming smaller and more portable and the internet used by more people than ever before, it’s plain to see that it is here to stay. That doesn’t mean children should be left to discover it on their own. There are so many distractions in our lives, and you have to make sure that your kids still have the chance to be kids. But it is possible to see that they experience all that used to be so great about the innocence of childhood, while also enjoying the nearly limitless knowledge that technology can bring. Here are five tips to help you introduce technology to your kids.
First of all, look for toys that get them thinking about technology while still using their creativity. Legos are great for this, and there are sizes that fit almost every age. Kids can build basically anything they can dream of, and newer Lego sets actually come with motors and various other high-tech gadgets that show your kids what’s possible with technology without leaving them to sit in front of the computer for hours on end. Choose Your Own Adventure books are another great option, once your kids are reading. While they don’t involve technology, they do show kids how decision-making can control a story. Your children will start to wonder how that works, and the ’cause and effect’ conversations you can have are a solid precursor to hands-on gadgets.

Moving From a Large Home to a Small Apartment With Kids
Sometimes, life catches us off guard. For instance, you may have experienced a season where you were living in a really big house and then, either due to a change in jobs or a need for relocation to another city, it has required that you either temporarily or permanently move into a small apartment. Plus, if you have children, it can make moving just that much more…strategic.
There are some things that you can do to make the process easier, though. Check these five recommendations out below:
Pick your apartment wisely. One great thing about having a home is that even if the house was noisy, it was noise that you and your kids (and no one else) created. When you’re in an apartment, though, you are also dealing with all of the “outside noises” from the people in the apartments around you. One way that you can avoid this is by getting an apartment on the top floor and at the end of the complex. They tend to be less of an audible distraction.
Be literal about your space. A large house means that you had a lot more room for a lot more things. You can actually make your apartment appear much smaller and more cluttered by trying to take everything from the house along with you. So, before [Read more…]
Discovery Kids World Map #GiftGuide
Do you have a big open wall that is just asking for a brightly colored educational wall hanging? Maybe a play room or your child’s bedroom where there is something missing. Let me propose a map! Maps are a staple in our play room. As of now, I think there are four of them up, ranging from maps of the world to maps of the United States. There has been a frightening turn in the education of children recently. So many kids do not know even basic geography. Quite a few kids that I know, and adults for that matter, for some reason, have no idea how to read a map. Could this be because GPS’s have made them obsolete? I certainly hope not. There are studies released semi-regularly showing how poor our map skills are. But the scariest ‘study’ is to ask your kids, do they know what state they live [Read more…]

Top 5 Tips for Raising Moral and Ethical Children
Parenthood is often a complete joy. You bring this little being into the world, and you get to watch as he or she grows from a dependent being into a well-rounded individual, contributing in some meaningful way to your family and society as a whole. But that process can also be terrifying. If you stop and consider how much power you have over that process you might just curl up in the corner. Most new parents spend months watching their children sleep, just to make sure they are still breathing. Knowing that you have a great deal of say into what sort of person your child becomes? That’s a huge responsibility. But that’s the reality of being a parent. It is up to you to raise your child with a strong sense of morals and ethics, and an understanding of right and wrong and how to treat people that will help him fulfill that promise you saw in his eyes from the first day of his life. These lessons must be ongoing, and as long as you maintain that sort of consistency you’ll be fine. Here are five tips to help you raise moral and ethical children.
The most important tip is completely within your control, and that is to make sure you are setting a proper example. Ever notice how you can tell your child to do something a million times and he will refuse, but as soon as he sees you doing it he gets right into the flow? Kids learn from observing others and mimicking their behavior, not from being told what to do. So if you have a strong sense of morals and ethics and you make sure you live by them on a daily basis, your kids will pick up on that. Just make sure your child is there to see you positively contributing to society, helping others in need, being generous, honest and dependable. The more he sees you living by that elevated [Read more…]
