5 Ways to Teach Children to Be Global Citizens

global citizen kidsWhat is a global citizen? It is someone who has an understanding of and appreciation for the
diversity amongst cultures and countries, who values the contributions that all of us make, and who
strives to ensure peace and equality for all. But it is also a person who takes steps to do less harm
through his or her own actions, not only to other people, but to the planet and its many inhabitants.
Global citizenry implies personal, social, and environmental responsibility of the highest order, and if
you want your kids to grow up to be global citizens, here are a few ways to set them on the right path.

teach your kids to be global citizens

  1. Pen pals. One of the best ways to help your children understand the size and scope of the
world we live in is to get them interacting on a personal level with kids across the globe. And finding
international pen pals is a lot easier these days thanks to the internet. Organizations like Students of the
World, International Pen Friends, and InterPals Pen Pals all have websites through which your children
can safely sign up for pen pals. And the best part is that many sites offer not only the ability to write
letters back and forth, but also to communicate via email or chat in some cases. It’s a brave new world
out there, and these forums provide safe platforms for your kids to interact with their peers around the
    world.
  2. Festivals. Depending on where you live (such as a metropolitan [Read more…]

Meet Me at @SesamePlace #ThemePark

One of my son’s highlights has been his recent trip to Sesame Place in Buck’s County, PA. I grew up with Sesame Street, and as a teacher I love the educational, social, and cultural values it helps to instill. As a parent- I love it, too! There are versions of Sesame Street all over the world- from Russia to Mexico. Something about knowing that this sweet, educational show unites kids globally (literally) really touches me- and even more so now that I myself am a mom, teacher, and travel enthusiast. You can’t see the world until you go out and experience it- start young, and make a little global citizen. But I digress!

We had so much fun at the theme park, there are all sorts of fun rides- and for once, they are ALL aimed at little ones.

5 Fun Educational Vacation Destinations for Kids

Late spring and early summer are the times of year when families making preparations to take vacations together. And while it can be great to go to cities that have amusement parks or to take a cross-country road trip in an RV, when you have children that are elementary school age, it can also be a good idea to take them on a vacation that can be as educational as it is entertaining.

educational travelIf you’re in the midst of planning your next trip and you’d like a few ideas on some educational vacation destinations to visit, we have five that both you and your kids will enjoy going to this year:

Experience Music Project/Science Fiction Museum (Seattle, Washington). If you live around the West Coast, then you might want to take a trip to a place that has become all the rage among museum lovers. The Experience Music Project/Science Fiction Museum is great for children who are already showing signs of being a future artist or musician. There are artifacts from artists like the Beatles and Nirvana, kids are able to play instruments at the Spin Kids Station and in the Sound Lab, they can even record their own mini-CD. Plus the Science Fiction Museum that’s located on the second floor offers all kinds of interesting exhibits too.

Hyatt Regency Tamaya (Bernalillo, New Mexico). One place [Read more…]

Enjoy a Stay on Florida’s Beautiful Panhandle #HiltonSandestinMoms

Disclosure: My son and I were invited to the to Hilton Sandestin resort and expenses were paid, but as always, all opinions are my own and honest. I was not required nor paid to write this review.

florida hiltonA few weeks ago, my 5 year old and I paid a visit the Hilton Sandestin in Destin, Florida. Located on the Emerald Coast of Florida, on the panhandle, this is a great hotel to check out if you are looking to spend some time with the family. Escaping the cold here in NJ, we were thrilled to reach the beautiful beaches of the Florida coast, where the images we had seen on the website did not do any justice. (There were also sliding glass doors in every room leading to a balcony outside- the views for sunrise and sunset were lovely.)

Upon walking into the room, we were immediately met with something that my son just adores- bunk beds! The top bunk is designed with safety in mind, having a build in safety bar (so there will not be any late-night roll offs onto the floor). Right away, I knew the room and resort would be kid friendly, and my son felt at home and at ease. There is a TV in that area of the room, should you want your children to be able to watch some cartoons at the end of the day while you watch your show in the other area (or unpack, read, check email, send photos, etc). That little bit of separation can be life-saving on family vacations, when at times the family makes you want to tear your hair out. A little space can let everyone breathe and be alone for just a few moments. Also in the room were a small refrigerator and microwave, which again adds convenience for the little things, or if you have a baby on formula or for storing breast milk.

bunk bedsAnother saving idea is the bathroom- which has the full barrage of what you would expect in a bathroom. The tub was also very clean- and most of you know how I feel about hotel tubs 🙂 But outside the bathroom door was a second sink and mirror, which is great for families who are all getting ready at the same time. Several people can get ready at once, brush teeth, do hair, go to the potty, take a shower, blow dry their hair- whatever works for them at that time. This is a real time saver and great idea. There is a blow dryer attached to the wall as well for your convenience.

mom blogger tripThe resort is directly on the beach, which any parent will tell you is a huge plus. No need to lug all your gear and toys all up and down, just a few steps to the sand. If you prefer, you can also rent beach chairs and umbrellas from the resort (which they will set up for you) or you can bring your own. There are also several pools to choose from outside, another inside- as well as a hot tub both outdoor and another indoors. There are outdoor shaded cabanas to rent if you would like to, as well as plenty of lounge chairs and umbrellas situated all about the pools. There is [Read more…]

Try a Hobo Lunch on the Train

If your family is like mine, you have at least one kid that loves the train. We do train rides at every chance, with our favorite being the Strasburg Railroad in PA. While we love the train, sometimes you want to switch it up a little or add a little something to it. The hobo lunch is perfect way to bring the authentic feel of an old-time train ride without having to hop between moving cars or robbing the passengers while on horseback. 🙂

Best Mexican Food to Eat With Your Kids

In Mexico, it feels like summer all the time, and as our winter slowly turns to spring, there are so many ways that we can get inspired by the fresh local ingredients in our supermarkets to prepare some amazing dishes. Whether you’ve been lucky enough to book flights to Cancun or any other beautiful part of Mexico to discover all of the delicious and authentic food the country has to offer, or whether you just get inspired by Mexico’s great array of dishes, there are so many different recipes to try out.

authentic mexican foodMexico is one of those lucky countries where most people can shop at outdoor
markets; Cancun has two famous markets called Mercado 23 and Mercado 28,
situated near the beach.

Did you know that corn is a major staple in Mexico, and is much more prevalent
than rice or wheat? Corn forms the basis for numerous Mexican dishes, and you’ll
probably be familiar with its most common form: tortillas. Another pretty basic element
of Mexican cooking is sauces. Most meals rarely come without some sort of delicious
sauce, like salsa or mole.

Not only is Mexican cuisine fun to prepare with little ones, it’s also a good way to
encourage your kids to eat their vegetables, especially when you include guacamole
