6 ideas for a pleasant family weekend in Bergamo

Bergamo is an ancient city in Lombardy, located on the picturesque foothills of the Alps. It can offer both rich and diverse architecture, variety of exciting activities, sincere and open people, surprisingly clean and fresh air. In a nutshell, Bergamo has all those things that make the city a perfect destination for holiday with kids!

The article will help you to briefly get acquainted with the most interesting attractions in Bergamo that will please you and your kids.

Bergamo is one of four Italian cities with their centers completely surrounded by ancient walls.  In fact, Bergamo is split into two parts. The upper part is the ancient city (Bergamo Alta) located on the top of the hill; the lower part is the modern city (Bergamo Bassa) that doesn’t represent anything interesting for tourists. You can reach the ancient city either by car or public transport, but there is much more interesting way – funicular railway.

Funicular railway

Trip in the funicular car is a little adventure for small kids and also a great opportunity to enjoy nice views of the city. The lower station is located on Viale delle Muraand the upper one is in literally two steps from the famous Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. The funicular can fit up to 50 people, so don’t let slip your turn, otherwise you’ll have to wait another car.

It’s interesting to know that tight orange cars of the Bergamo funicular have been operating since 1888 and originally they were drawn by horses. Funicular railway connecting upper and lower parts of Bergamo isn’t the only one in the city. In fact, there is another car able to take you from the Bergamo Alta to the very top of the hill.

Parco Faunistico Le Cornelle

It’s a scientific base of the University of Milan that is engaged in the problem of preserving grey parrots. Thus, apart from the usual walks among aviaries, Parco Faunistico Le Cornelle can offer the quite serious several hours excursion with a lot of fascinating stories about virtually every animal in the park.

Although the zoo isn’t very big, still it’s a real pleasure to spend time here. This tiny zoo has managed to gather various kinds of animals from guinea pigs to cheetahs. It has many cafes and restaurants as well as picnic areas equipped with tables and benches. So, if don’t want to spend the extra money on visiting cafe, you can simply bring some snacks with you and arrange little lunch in the open air.

You should acknowledge beforehand that it’s a really tough task to get to Parco Faunistico Le Cornelle from Milan without your own car. Even from Bergamo itself, the park is located in about 11 km.  On the other hand, the park has a convenient parking zone, where you can safely leave your car.

ATB Transport Museum

ATB museum opens doors into the past and shows you how public transport of Bergamo has been changing for the last hundred years.  The museum is designed in a modern way and is full of interactive displays and multimedia installations. The real pride of the ATB Museum is its “time-travelling funicular” offering its visitors an opportunity to discover history of transport in Bergamo through the windows of funicular car.

Natural Science Museum Enrico Caffi

Judging from the many reviews, the Natural Science Museum in Bergamo is very interesting for kids, but can’t offer something very exciting for adults. However, the museum enjoys great popularity among both locals and tourist and you’ll meet here a lot of parents with children.

The main exhibits are stuffed animals, ancient skeletons and fossils, different minerals and stones.  In general, the exposition is quite interesting and includes even a small collection of mammals.  Another great thing about the museum is that the entrance is free and the museum located in the historical center of Bergamo, so you can visit the museum during your city tour.

Discover the beauty of Bergamo surroundings

Rich historical heritage isn’t the only thing Bergamo is famous for.  It’s hard not to notice the beauty of the nature of Bergamo province.  Picturesque green valleys, serene clear lakes and magnificent mountains. All this is only in one hour drive from Bergamo.  For instance, you can visit lakes Endine and Iseo that are in 30 km and 45 km respectively.

Lake Iseo

On the shores of the Lake Iseo, you can admire beautiful sceneries and incredibly diverse landscapes including rocky walls sprouting out of the water, olive groves, tiny coves and bays. The lake is literally framed with many small cozy towns, so you have a large selection of hotels to stay in. Local gastronomic traditions deserve special mention. Such delicious dishes and fine wine you won’t find anywhere else in Italy!

Lake Endine

Whereas Lake Iseo is very popular among tourists, Lake Endine is rarely visited even by locals. It is small, about 6 km in length and there aren’t large cities nearby. Most visitors of Endine come here for fishing or watching birds and enjoying silence and solitude.

However, there are small beaches on the shores of well-equipped with all needed stuff for a good rest. Here you and your kids can rent a boat or enjoy water bike ride.

Bergamo is a beautiful and charming city with very diverse and beautiful architecture. It’s a good holiday destination, but you shouldn’t forget that city tourism could be quite tiresome even for adults not to mention small kids.

Endless walking, hours of city tours and excursions – all this takes a lot of energy. Thus, try to solve transportation problem in advance. Spend a little bit more money on your vacation and allocate some funds to rent comfortable car for the whole family. Believe that in Italy, there is nothing to do without four wheels!

All the beauty of Italy lies in its cozy provincial towns surrounded by picturesque landscapes. Explore Italy in the most convenient way! Book a car at Bergamo Airport in advance to save money and get exactly that model you’re looking for.

A Visit to the Hotel Adler Thermae, Tuscany

A getaway does wonders for the spirit, but when that trip is to Tuscany your soul will sing with delight. The sights, the sounds and the people offer a refreshing change of pace from the daily grind. A more lovely place to vacation couldn’t be found.

resorts in tuscanyA trip to Tuscany is an occasion, and such a wondrous occasion calls for top notch accommodations. Hotel Adler Thermae fits the bill perfectly. Imagine a luxury resort that is a perfect mix of modern architecture, nature, and classic Italian charm. The Hotel Adler Thermae has a rich history that stems back to 1810. Operated by the 7th generation of the Adler Family with obvious care and pride, this all inclusive hotel offers visitors a one of a kind stay that is drenched in class, style and luxury.

tuscan resort

The cuisine of Hotel Adler Thermae is worth writing home about! Imagine having a cocktail with the host to welcome you, or having a generous breakfast buffet available until 11 am to the delight of your taste buds. Lunch at Hotel Adler Thermae is nothing short of impressive. The salads, antipasti and pasta dishes and grilled meat and fish offerings are the perfect way to refuel for a busy day of sightseeing. The gourmet 4 and 5 course meals at dinner time are nothing short of mouth watering. My favorite part of the edible offerings of the hotel has to be the afternoon break buffet which features home-made cakes, all of which were completely drool worthy.

pic1While I could talk to you about the food at Hotel Adler Thermae all day long, there is so much more to offer at this luxury hotel. The Thermal Spa is a hot spring of wellness. The waters are heated naturally from deep within the earth and have absorbed minerals over time which are great for not only the mind but also the soul.

20140713_120904I loved that there are indoor and outdoor thermal pools for my enjoyment and a special thermal pool for children which features jet fountains and perfectly warm water that will lead to a lot of splashing fun for the kids.  The pool featured above actually goes into a whirlpool every 10 minutes, which my son absolutely adored.

Why Visit Wales?

As the weather turns colder and the leaves fall, many of us begin to plan our spring holidays and think of the days when everything will be bright and blooming again. If the thoughts of adventure, nature, a unique culture and history, good food and warm people make you want to book a trip- why not think Wales?

A tiny country surrounded by it’s better-known neighbors, England, Scotland, and Ireland, Wales is a part of the United Kingdom but has a heritage and language all it’s own.  Fear not, non-Welsh speakers- almost all of the Welsh speak English, many as a first language (though you can hear the distinct language spoken often and all signs in the country are multilingual).

Bordered by England on the east, it is surrounded by water to it’s north, west, and southern boarders by the Bristol Channel and Irish Sea.  The country is so proud of it’s coastline that it became the first country in the world to create a coastal path that covers the entire country.  The Wales Coast Path began in 2012, and has been attracting nature lovers and hikers to the country since. If you love the beach, Wales is a must-visit, being the number two ranked coastal destination in the world. (National Geographic, 2011)

panasonic 07 17 14 351If it’s the coast you love, one of the most amazing sights is just a quick drive from Swansea- the Gower Peninsula. With it’s amazing views, scenery that is hard to match, and even some interesting bird sightings, this is one spot that should be on everyone’s “must see” list.  Take a stroll all the way out to “The Worms Head”, named for it’s resemblance to a sleeping dragon.  Along the way, marvel at the striking limestone cliffs, lush greenery, wildflowers, and historical ruins on the path, as well as the Rhossili beach below.  For a very tiny area, there is a lot to see.  If you are able, do take the walk down the steep hill down to the beach (wear appropriate shoes, this is not a path for flip flops or heels) and you will get an amazing alternate view- up at the cliffs.  You can also see the remains of the Helvetia, shipwrecked in 1887 on the sands and visible during low tide. This spot has been designated as an “Area of Outstanding Beauty” since 1949, the first place in the UK to win such an honor, and once you are there you will understand why.

panasonic 07 17 14 356If you have not gotten enough communing with nature, why not try your hand at riding a horse?  No matter if you are an experienced hand, novice, or child, there is a horse or pony with your name on it.  Roughly an hour and a half from the Gower Peninsula (or slightly longer then one hour from Cardiff, 2 hours from London) in South Wales you can find the beautiful Brecon Beacons.  Once you have arrived, there are quite a few stables to choose from depending on your skill set and how long you would like to ride (full day, half day, and even several day trips).  The scenery is lovely, and your experienced guide will show you the best the area has to offer.  If you choose, you can also get horse or pony riding lessons, a treat for adults or children alike. Visit http://www.horseridingbreconbeacons.com to find the tour for you.

The most romantic places in London

Just like beauty is in the eye of the beholder, what is considered romantic differs from person-to-person. One person’s atmospheric music hall is another’s dilapidated antiquated dump. Still there are a few common themes that are consistent, no matter who is doing the romancing. The colour red is usually important, as are candles. A personal touch is usually recommended and it is pretty safe to say that most people prefer piano-led crooning to thrash metal in the romantic music stakes.

In a venue, the lighting is always significant, as is atmosphere. People generally love a place with history, though an assiduously designed cocktail bar can do the trick too. Of course, a romantic venue doesn’t just have to be inside an actual building, a sun filled park, a dimly lit square or a derelict slum can all be imbued with the spirit of Cupid if the timing is just right.

If you are feeling in the mood for love and are looking for somewhere suitably romantic, then check out the places below.

Wilton’s Music Hall

Wilton's Music Hall

If you like your buildings steeped in history then Wilton’s Music Hall in Whitechapel has it by the stage full. It is the oldest surviving music hall in the world and has been hosting couples from all over the great cesspool that is London and beyond for over a century. Over the years it’s played to host to everyone from Charlie Chaplin and Stan Laurel to Spike Milligan who even made a film there called the Great McGonagall. The hall has withstood fire, flooding, bombs and ultimately time itself to stand as a slightly crumbly relic of yesteryear. And it also hosts films, music, theatre and has a spiff bar, the Mahogany Bar, next to the main hall.

Go Natural In Norway

Most of us spend nearly the whole day with some sort of technology- in front of a computer, an app on our cell phones, watching the TV to unwind- and that might be why our minds and bodies crave time outdoors so badly that we find ourselves edgy, depressed, agitated.  Just in general out of sorts.   When you feel nature calling, answer it.

Gal S5 06 30 14 252The natural beauty of Norway is stunning, with stunning views everywhere you look.  (This is a bonus for the less-then-professional photographers among us, who will find themselves unable to take a bad photo.)  Some of the most amazing sights in Norway revolve around fjords (long, narrow arm of the sea bordered by steep cliffs: usually formed by glacial erosion- dictionary.com definition for anyone not familiar with the term).  What you might not know is how naturally beautiful Norway is.  The pristine, unadorned loveliness around every turn is both stunning and even a bit startling.  There are certainly not many places as pleasing to the eye as Norway.

Norway, Packing, Products (canon small cam) 221Take the famous Flam Railway, which begins at the the mountainous Myrdal station on the Bergen railway, all the way down to the Flam station.  This is easy to get to from major cities like Oslo or Bergen as the Flamsbana or Flam Railway corresponds with the trains along the Oslo-Bergen route. Along the way, you will be greeted with some of the most amazing scenery that you will ever have had the pleasure to gaze upon.  Books will stay unopened in your backpack, and even your precious smart phones and tablets will be at rest- except perhaps to take a few photos of the memorable landscape.  The train stops along the way, letting passengers on or off at several locations- but also it stops for your viewing pleasure.  There are points that the train will allow you to get off just for photo ops- which is not only fantastic for shutterbugs, but should also give you an indication of just how glorious the scenery truly is.

Gal S5 06 30 14 139One such “photo-op-stop” was in Kjosfossen.  This waterfall (one of the most visited attractions in Norway) is larger then most others you will pass, and it has a deck or platform for viewing and photos to be taken.  It also is used to help power the Flam line, how’s that for using your natural resources?  In our excitement to take the best photo, we nearly missed an amazing, quite surprising spectacle- in the middle of the waterfalls appeared a woman, dressed in red, dancing as music played- then she jumped behind the rocks- seemingly into the waterfalls. We learned later that she is an actress from the Norwegian ballet school, portraying the legendary Huldra (part woman, part animal seductress who lures men to certain doom in Scandinavian folklore) for the summer season.  After the “show”, climb back on board the train to your destination of choice.  (Tip- save yourself the stress- let the “more pushy” passengers snap selfies first, then you can get a decent photo.  No point pushing, the train does give ample time.)

Gal S5 06 30 14 137Should you take the train all the way to Flam, you would disembark onto a storybook setting. Flam looks to be right out of a picture book or painting- quiet, idyllic, and unspoiled. Located on the most inner part of the Aurlandsfjord, you will find yourself surrounded by tall mountains and deep fjords. Outdoor enthusiasts and families will love this nature’s paradise, where you can not only get your fill of the outdoors, but steep yourself in local history, culture, and traditional foods as well.

What to do in Rome, Italy With Kids

What to do when in Rome?  It’s kind of hard to do as the Romans did- but you can try to walk in their footsteps a bit.  Depending on how long you have to tour will decide how many attractions and historical sites that you get to see.  While not a small city, the historic center is clustered together, making many things walking distance.

The Sistine Chapel is a must see for art and history lovers alike.  Guided tours are not allowed inside, so your guide (if you have one) will fill you in before you enter.  You can also self guide, of course. One of the highlights has to be seeing the famous “Creation of Adam” painting, where God nearly touches the hand of His first man.  More humorously, see Michelangelo’s self-portrait (himself being boneless), in “Last Judgement”.

Get your gladiator on at the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill. Schedule at least a half day for these stops, which put you in the footsteps of slaves and emperors.  Walk the “Sacred Way'” and see the final resting place of Julius Caesar.  Wander through the Colosseum’s first and second tiers, and imagine the amphitheater flooded for boat battles or gladiators doomed to fight to the death, living and dying at the whim of the crowd or emperor.  A short walk just beyond the Colosseum is the Roman Forum, where you can see some of the most impressive ruins. Among these are the House of the Vestal Virgins and the Temple of Julius Caesar. Take time to walk up Palatine Hill (the most famed of “The Seven Hills of Rome) for a stunning view of Nero’s Circus Maximus.
