Shopping for kids: The stress-free guide

As most adults will testify, nothing quite beats a touch of retail therapy. It’s something that most of us crave, but life responsibilities tend to mean that it doesn’t happen anywhere near enough as it should. When it comes to children, shopping doesn’t quite have the same appeal. Instead, it’s regarded as one of the most frustrating pastimes around – even if the experience is geared to their requirements!

Unfortunately, kids need clothes – and these shopping trips are a necessity. Today’s article is, therefore, going to focus on some of the best tips you can implement to ensure that the day is as stress-free as possible, while still ensuring that you come out of it with plenty of suitable garments for your little one.

There’s no one-fits-all rule

There’s no doubt that the internet shopping era has made life a whole lot easier. However, there is a debate as to whether this approach is really going to work when it comes to choosing appropriate kid’s clothes.

Unfortunately, not all brands are equal when it comes to size. What might be classed as suitable for a 5-year-old in one shop is more like a 3-year-old’s in another. It means that unless you know a brand inside-out, you need to ask your child to try most things on. It might mean a trip to the shops in Covent Garden or your local area of choice, but it will be worth the time.

Make shopping into a game

Of course, there’s one issue with the above suggestion – shopping with kids can be quite difficult. As we’ve already spoken about, it can be difficult to convince your little ones to venture to the high-street and even when you do, battling through sulky faces can make for a difficult afternoon.

This is where you need to get creative. All children enjoy games, and this is the path you need to turn to if you are serious about keeping everyone happy. This doesn’t have to be an extravagant game by any stretch of the imagination; it might be as simple as asking your little one to see who can be the first to see ten different pieces of red clothing.

And then – the reward factor

As adults, clothes are a sufficient reward. Suffice to say; the same philosophy doesn’t apply with kids. Going out and shopping for clothes is a boring exercise, and this means that you need to build rewards into the day. Again, these rewards don’t have to be significant; it might be an ice-cream if they can get through a couple of hours of shopping moan-free. Or, it might be nipping off to the arcade. In other words, find out what makes your child tick (sometimes it’s not rewards), and try and motivate them this way.

Pick your moments

Finally, some days are more suited to these trips than others. If you know that your child is tired, opting for a shopping extravaganza probably isn’t going to end well for anyone. Yes, you do need to compromise with your plans, but this can make the final result much more fruitful for you all as a family. Spending time together in this way might even help you to bond in the long term.

Getting ready for back to school always requires a fairly big shop. When you have kids, so does the weekly grocery shopping trip, am I right? It’s bananas how much food these little hoovers consume. I have no idea where they put it, either. This is one of the main reasons I became a Costco member- that, and because they are often cited as one of the most ethical large companies out there. I try to shop small, shop local, and shop ethical whenever humanly possible. They tend to have higher quality products, sustainable sourced and ethically produced, as well as a fair pay for employees and a compassionate working environment. Imagine that! If only all companies acted like that. They do well for it, as well. The stores are always clean, and shopping experiences are easy and pleasant. Well, that’s not counting for the kids- but no store is responsible for that, LOL.  They almost always have “sample stations” throughout the store that you can bribe the kiddos with, however. Smart thinking, Sell more products, since we buy what we like, AND no hangry customers. Very smart.

The prices are fair, and less since you buy in bulk as well. This also means more time between trips, hopefully! I also like that they don’t use bags- bring your own, or use boxes, or just load directly into your car. Easy.

Getting the kids ready for going back to school? It’s that time of year, and if you are anything like me, you also dread back to school shopping. I try to get at least some of it done online. Amazon is the one-stop-shop for all things BTS – allowing moms, dads and kids to find products that are as unique and individualized as they are, which gives kids confidence walking through the halls on the first day of school.

This might seem like a strange photo- but he wouldn’t stop crying until I gave him this carrot and that potato. We’ve all had those moments where our children are little beasties in public- and where we will do ANYTHING to make it stop and just get out of wherever we are in one piece.  What can we do to make shopping easier with little kids?

Impatient leg swinging from the shopping cart seat is often followed by a litany of Mom, Mommy, and MOM! Even when I respond there are times that my little one just doesn’t stop. Then there are the forceful kicks to emphasize his impatience. Maybe you avoid those dangerous little feet, maybe you wind up with a dirty shoe scuffing up your white shirt. Or maybe you share my experience… a day when those scuff marks were more than just dirt.

I confess that I don’t love all things poop related and blown out diapers and clothing. What, you know someone who does? Diaper days were not my favorite. So that day between the tantrum throwing toddler in a store I visit regularly, what I can only figure was dog poop (please?) transferred from his shoe all over my embroidered white shirt, and an otherwise too stressful week- there was a scene of epic proportions. My Thoughts:

I am absolutely in love with this amazing product. I was looking forward to using this product a great deal and was so happy to try it out. My daughter absolutely loves it as you can see in her photo. I was worried about putting it on the cart and holding a squirming baby by myself. I decided for the first time to use it I would just park close to a cart rack in the parking lot and grab a cart and get it situated before I got her out of the carseat. That worked wonderfully, but I must admit that it was not hard to get it put on and I now can do it while holding that squirming baby :).

I love how it safely sits on the cart and it is perfectly comfortable for my daughter. I can do all the shopping I need to and not have to worry about no room to put stuff because the carseat was sitting down in the cart. I always had read that you were not supposed to put your carseat on the cart like so many people do. I am a big rule follower so I never set it on the top of the cart. I love that you can also put your carseat in the holder safely as well if you want to carry the carseat in.

I am going to be recommending this amazing item to everyone I know that has a young child or is currently expecting.

Looking for the perfect place to shop for Mom?  Or maybe your wife- since some of the kids are too small to shop on their own, dad’s or partners will have to help out a little.
