Reduce the Cost and Enjoy the Move

Whether you are moving around the block or out of state, it can become stressful. With so many tasks ahead, you may have trouble focusing on one item at a time. With a little bit of planning, you can take that element off the table and look forward to your new home.

Utilities and other services for your new residence

After you have signed contracts and have a firm date of closing, the first thing to do is to get mail forwarding in place. This is easy to do and one of the things many people forget. Once you have that in place you can contact the local township where you are moving and find out what electric company, gas, water, and cable services are available. This will give you time to review each one before making a blind decision that may end up costing more than it should. Some companies like Epcor Calgary offer both gas and electric services. This can sometimes save you even more by bundling the two with the same provider.

This is also true with cable companies that also offer phone and internet. With the luxury of time on your side, you can make educated decisions that will benefit you in the end. If you are able to visit before you move in, then you can schedule them for the same day so that all utilities for your new home are on before you move in.

Preparing to move

Moving is not easy, especially if you’ve been a pack rat for a number of years. The first thing you need to do is decide whether you want to rent a truck or hire movers. If it’s a local move, renting a truck can be cost effective. The mileage won’t play into the cost and you can rent a smaller truck and make a few trips instead of one. The transfer of utilities is also easy. You shouldn’t need any deposits since you are already an existing customer. On the other hand, if this is a long-distance move you’ll only have one chance to move everything. The best thing to do is write down on a sheet of paper the pros and cons and costs involved for a rental vs a moving company. One you have that worked out then you can plan the process of decluttering and packing.

Travel light

With moving, every object carries a price tag. The more space you use the bigger the truck you need and the more expensive the move becomes. In order to save money and reduce the cost of moving, a room by room assessment is a necessary step in discovering what you actually need and want to keep. For instance, if your dining room table has seen better days or is outdated and you may replace it, then taking it along will just fill space that you can use for more important items. Once you comprise a list of the things to will take, it’s time to decide what to do with the rest.

Host a Moving sale

If you find that you have a lot of items that are in good condition, hosting a moving sale is a smart way to go. It not only removes those items without any additional cost to you, but it also puts a few dollars back in your pocket, offsetting the moving expenses. You can hang flyers, list it in the paper or use an online service. Anything that doesn’t sell you can give away to family and friends, or make a deal for a one-time pick-up from your local garbage company. The rates are usually fair.

With the extra merchandise out of your home, you now have the space to begin the process of packing everything up. If you don’t want to part with a few hundred dollars for boxes, local retailers are usually pretty good about letting you take theirs. While they won’t be new, they will serve the purpose for the short term. Newspapers, coffee filters, and sheets also provide a great way to pack up delicate items without the need for additional packing supplies. Label each box with a list of the general items and the room it belongs to, this will make it easy to place boxes in the proper room on the receiving end.

By making a list and addressing all areas of interest ahead of time, you can look forward to starting your next chapter in your new home.

Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals #HelpKidsLiveBetter

As a parent there is nothing scarier then the thought of your child seriously sick or hurt.  This can be a horrible maddening experience where you are not only helpless in the face of a big problem but also without answers and especially without reasons.  But for these serious times it is good to know Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals are out there and willing to give you the help you need to get your child back in good shape.

The little guy at one point was very ill.  He had a whole bunch of stomach issues to say the least.  And as we adults know these are not ‘fun’ experiences and we know exactly what is going on and that they have to happen.  As a little one, all he knew was something hurt.  So we met with doctors, many of them.  From dietitians to gastroenterologists and even GI surgeons, all had very little to tell us. They all gave us different reasons and things to try, and none seemed to work.  Eventually we did find out what was wrong, part of the reason was that his intestine and bowels were too big for his size/age.  This part, he will eventually “grow into”.  Other issues still had to be worked out, and he is what I lovingly refer to as “high maintenance”.  It’s an ongoing situation.  Even now, we have a therapeutic way of keeping this issue in control as long as he takes a certain combination of probiotics and vitamins every single day, as well as some other medications and keeps his water and fiber intake high.  If even one day is missed, it is problematic and makes for some horribly painful daily activities.

If this issue wasn’t found and dealt with in a proper matter by competent caring doctors, we would still be worrying day and night about it, and the poor little guy would still be having at least daily stomach pain and probably worse.  If you want to help out kids in need, please consider donating to Children’s Miracle Network of Hospitals.

#HelpKidsLiveBetter by donating to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals at your local Wal-Mart or Sam’s Club today. You can join your community in donating to your local children’s hospital at a Wal-Mart or Sam’s Club near you. Help make miracles happen for kids when you donate at your checkout today. Your donations help children’s hospitals provide the best care for the kids. Every minute 62 children enter a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital for treatment; your donations ensure these hospitals can provide the best care for these children. Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals in the U.S. provide more than $3.5 billion in charitable care every year. Last year Wal-Mart customers and Sam’s Club members, like you, helped raise more than $60 million to #HelpKidsLiveBetter. Every dollar raised at your local Wal-Mart or Sam’s Club goes directly to your local Children’s Miracle Network Hospital.  Since 1987 Wal-Mart customers and Sam’s Club members together with store associates have raised nearly $1 billion for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

Top Breathtaking Places You Need to See in the USA

Some of the most beautiful places in the world are just a road trip away. If you’re looking to visit places with incredible natural beauty, you don’t even have to leave the United States. Taking a road trip to your destination allows you the ability to get in touch with nature and see things you’ll otherwise miss on an airplane. Take an unforgettable journey to some of the most amazing places you’ll find right here in the USA.

Preparing for Your Trip

Before you take a trip, a lot of preparation is involved. Start planning as early as possible to ensure you don’t miss any important details. Road trips can create lifelong memories, but you should always plan ahead. Automobile accidents happen even if you’re the most careful driver in the world. If you live in New York, consider consulting Brooklyn personal injury lawyers if you find yourself in need of legal assistance following an accident. Take the time to carefully plan your routes and the places you want to stop before you begin your journey.

Skagit Valley Tulip Fields, Washington

If you want to see fields of breathtaking color that attract millions of visitors from all over, head over to Skagit Valley Tulip Fields in Washington. Plan your trip for the month of April when the flowers will be in bloom across 300 acres. Aside from the tulips, there is plenty to do in Skagit Valley including visiting the state and national parks, museums, Las Vegas-style casino, a thriving performance art scene, and an abundance of museums.

The Smoky Mountains North Carolina and Tennessee

Approximately 9 million people come to see the Smoky Mountains every year, that’s how amazing they are. Not only is the scenery completely breathtaking, but there is so much else to do. You can enjoy the waterfalls and wildflowers, horseback riding, wildlife viewing, bicycling, camping, visiting historic buildings, picnicking, and ranger-led programs. This mountain range is a subrange of the Appalachian Mountains and is along the North Carolina and Tennessee border. The mountain views are simply unforgettable and unlike any, you’ll ever see anywhere else.

Thor’s Well in Oregon

Thor’s Well is along Cape Perpetua and is uniquely beautiful. This natural deep hole is a saltwater fountain that looks as if it’s draining the ocean. The natural wonder is created by powerful ocean tides and is best viewed an hour before or an hour after high tide. The hole looks like it’s bottomless, but it’s actually around 20-feet deep. It looks exceptional magical and is something you don’t want to miss out on seeing. It can be dangerous, especially during storms, so proceed with caution.

Mendenhall Glacier Caves, Alaska

The Mendenhall Glacier Caves in Alaska looks surreal, like something that jumped right out of a painting. The glacier is 12 miles long and is accessible only by kayak. The sad thing about this natural beauty is that due to global warming, it’s beginning to retreat, which means if you want to see it, you’ll need to make a plan to visit as soon as possible.

Some of the best trips are those where you can become one with nature and enjoy natural beauty. Consider taking a road trip if you can because it will make your trip that much more unforgettable. Always prepare way ahead of time because it’s easy to miss things you need to pack or travel apps you need to download to plan your route. Wherever you decide to visit, make the most of it. Life is too short not to see the beauty of the world.

New to Being a Mom? Keep Yourself Sane in Case of These Four Classic “Emergencies”

There’s perhaps nothing more rewarding than being a new mother.

Likewise, there’s perhaps nothing more stressful.

Let’s face the facts: there are millions of moving pieces to being a new mom, especially if you’re a working mother. From making sure the house is clean to keeping your family fed, it’s completely normal to experience a bit of a breakdown from time to time.

However, according to the American Psychology Association, the stress associated with parenting is no joke given the following:

  • Women are exponentially more likely to experience symptoms of emotional stress such as headaches, overeating and emotional outbursts versus men

  • 56% of new mothers and married women stated their stress levels have increased within the past five years

  • Approximately 80% of family health care decisions are made by women, indicating an extra burden of responsibility on new mothers

Perhaps the best way to fight stress and keep yourself sane is to prepare for the little “emergencies” that tend to strike when we least expect them. The following emergencies aren’t life and death situations, but rather represent inconveniences that every mom should be prepared for. Stop stressing out and instead take a proactive approach to keeping your family and yourself happy when you need to the most.

Emergency Meals

You don’t have to be supermom 100% of the time: sometimes you simply don’t have the ingredients or the energy for a home-cooked meal. Instead, make sure to have some takeout options on deck. For example, keep an eye out for pizza coupons that will ensure you have a hot meal delivered quickly and on the cheap.

It’s also a good idea to invest in non-perishables and frozen meals from time to time, although such items shouldn’t necessarily become cornerstones of your family’s diet.

Having an emergency meal plan could be the difference between a happy household and an absolute nightmare.

Emergency Messes

There’s no shortage of messes to clean up when you’re a new mother. Having the following items in your pantry can help put a stop to even the stickiest of situations:

  • A solution of one cup of white vinegar, one cup warm water and a few drops of any essential oil represent a reliable all-purpose cleaner that smells awesome

  • Magic erasers (or copycat brands you can find on Amazon) can take care of kitchen messes

  • Bleach for heavy-duty clothing stains that need to be soaked away immediately

Although you can’t prevent every spill, the least you can do is be prepared.

Emergency Entertainment

Sometimes you flat out need a break from the madness, right?

There’s no shame in letting your kids veg out in front of the television from time to time. While you still need to keep an eye on them, don’t underestimate the power of a play-pen and some simple children shows. Streaming platforms such as Netflix and Hulu have just about every cartoon under the sun; likewise, they can auto-play episodes so you can relax for a while.

Emergency Supervision

Finally, make sure that you plan for emergency supervision in case you need to leave your kids alone for any extended period of time. Ideally, your spouse or parents could help: if not, consider an elderly nanny or trustworthy teenager in the neighborhood who’ll be willing to watch them for little to nothing. Of course, make sure you trust your babysitter and outline a routine for anyone watching your children.

There’s no denying the stresses that come with being a new parent. However, with the right tricks up your sleeve, you can take time to decompress and de-stress while still keeping your family happy.

Win Tickets- Curious George at the Liberty Science Center #LSCCuriousity

liberty science center

The Liberty Science Center in nearby Jersey City, NJ has a ton to do for kids and families. They also constantly rotate exhibits and events so no one ever gets tired of doing anything. The latest event is Curious George: Let’s Get Curious, which opened this weekend.

“Letting curiosity and inquiry be their guides, children explore familiar buildings and locales from the “Curious George” books and television series on PBS Kids in Curious George: Let’s Get Curious! The exhibit presents key concepts in science, math, and engineering, which are woven throughout the exhibit. Activities invite children to learn like Curious George does—through direct experience and problem solving!

You can also meet Curious George in person at the Science Center. George will visit October 1, November 11, November 25, December 28, and December 29. Come take photos with him and give a big, friendly hug. Curious George can’t wait to meet your family!”

You can also get plenty of Curious George souvenirs in the gift shop.

All the fun an excitement was a wonderful way to get kids and adults to learn science and mechanics in a hands on way, while having tons of fun- the true Liberty Science Center fashion. The kids also loved meeting Curious George himself.  The exhibit will run until Jan. 8, 2017.

hands on learning

There is also the “Bodies Revealed” exhibit that older kids, parents- and really anyone will enjoy. It does cost more, so as a premium exhibition, it is available with the Premium Pass or a Combination Ticket.

“Bodies Revealed* presents real human figures and organs that reveal the wonder and beauty of the human form. The exhibition shows detailed views of human anatomy, from whole body displays to individual skeletal, muscular, nervous, respiratory, digestive, urinary, reproductive, endocrine, and circulatory systems. Unlike models that idealize the body through the eyes of an artist, this exhibition shows the body and its systems as they really exist, including natural variation.

The figures, skeletons, and organs in Bodies Revealed came from individuals who donated their bodies to accredited medical universities in the People’s Republic of China for the purpose of study and education. All donated bodies were examined by an anatomist and a biological anthropologist to confirm that they died of natural causes. A separate gallery respectfully displays the stages of human development in the womb. All of the embryos and fetuses died of natural causes before birth. (Viewers enter the gallery through clearly marked doors.)”

hands on learning

Don’t forget to sign up for fun experiments! Staff is on hand if you or the kids need help. (And yes, the kids took turns, LOL)

There are also IMAX and Real 3D movies playing. These are also for an extra fee, but worth the price.  We saw “Beautiful Planet” in the IMAX theater, which was not only visually stunning, but also gave the audience insights as to the changes our planet is going through and why.  Hopefully, it also encourages people to make better choices to help the planet as well.

All this and more can be found at the Liberty Science Center, where science comes alive on a regular basis. Make sure you check out the ever changing schedule of IMAX movies (where where the gigantic IMAX screen makes the smallest of critters and the liveliest of robots come to life)- it’s very cool to see a movie in a giant dome.

If you would like to win a 4 pack of tickets, please just leave your name and email in the comments below. Ends Oct. 20, 2016. Thanks!
