Charlottesville, Virginia Family Fun

Read the full post on This Girl Travels!

OK, so maybe it wasn’t the President’s birthday- but it was my son’s.  When I asked him what he wanted to do to celebrate, he told me he wanted to “finally” see Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson (third president of the USA and the principal author of the Declaration of Independence). “Finally” is a relative term- he was turning 7.   So, off to Charlottesville, Virginia we went.

charlottesville

Charlottesville was the perfect place for this trip, because it has so much to offer in terms of Presidential history (and homes).  In and around Charlottesville, you can see the homes of four of the most influential presidents in American history- along with Thomas Jefferson, you can visit the homes of James Madison, George Washington, and James Monroe. That is a lot of history for a little area.  You can visit all the homes with a special pass should you so choose. The “President’s Passport” is one ticket that gives you access to all the homes of the four presidents. (Other added bonuses include free admission to 9 museums and historic sites in Alexandria if you show your paid ticket at the door, free wine tastings along the Monticello wine trail, savings at shopping areas, hotels, restaurants, and more. This is a good pass to get if you plan on spending a few days in the area.)

Our first stop, of course, was Monticello.  I was impressed to see that they offered “family” tours with a guide who made the time spent even in “no touching” areas fun for the kids.  She had a small bag packed with visual guides, books, photos, and toys that the children could see, touch, and play with to help them get a better idea of what she was explaining and the times that Jefferson lived in.  She also aimed the tour at them, using language they could understand without “dumbing down” the tour whatsoever- she used appropriate language and explanations, scaled to ability and age- but never assumed the children were unable to understand or grasp the knowledge.  This was something that the parents appreciated and the children thrived on- they all enjoyed the tour and remembered what they learned. (My son, of course, had to buy a stuffed Thomas Jefferson from the gift shop, just like the guide had.  It was his birthday, after all.)  There were also hands on activities to try one’s hand at when the tour was finished, such as using a quill pen and ink or playing with “old time” toys and games.

ULTIMATE SPIDER MAN Web Warriors Web Slingers

Spider-Man is a classic hero- smart, strong, fast, and a blast to follow in his comic books. His most recent adventures in Ultimate Spider-Man Web Warriors brings a new dimension to the classic character. That dimension is, well, new dimensions. No longer is Spider-Man the only web head who can save the day, now he has other ‘Spider-Men’ to help in his battles. His new friends include Iron Spider, Ultimate Spider-Man Miles, Agent Venom, and Scarlet Spider. Each Spider-Man is slightly different yet the same, with a background story that is familiar yet different. Miles’ story even involved the expiration of Peter Parker, the original Spider-Man in his dimension.

To bring this new story home for kids, Hasbro has released a line of new Web Warriors toys, which include new Web Slinging action. Each Web Slinger includes its own web to launch and has the ability to reach out and sling away. In addition to the various Spider-Men, also available is the Green Goblin and a nifty playset where web slinging is brought to life, the Web Slingers Trickshot Showdown Playset which is a web blasting arena which comes with 2 webs to sling, one 6 inch Spider-Man figure, and 5 targets, two of which are Venom and Green Goblin.

McFARLAND, USA – Fun Facts

  • “McFarland, USA” is inspired by a 1987 true story, in which an unlikely band of inexperienced, under-equipped, young Latino runners with exceptional determination rise to become cross-country state champions under the leadership of their coach, Jim White. Over the years since then, the McFarland High School cross-country teams have won nine state championships and the small school is considered a powerhouse in the sport.

  • Coach Jim White is retired now, but if you go to McFarland, chances are you will see him out there on his bike, keeping up with the kids every evening with a lot of his original team running alongside as well. White retired in 2002 after teaching in McFarland schools for 40 years and coaching for 25 years.

  • A number of the original runners on the championship 1987 cross-country team became educators in the McFarland school district. The former teammates are not only working in their hometown, but also raising their families there and actively supporting the cross-country teams of today by coaching, helping out with the meets and practices and donating goods or money so the teams have what they need.

  • Three out of the seven young actors on the team in the movie are from the McFarland area—Sergio Avelar who plays Victor Puentes and Michael Aguero, cast as Damacio Diaz, are actual runners and Ramiro Rodriguez, as Danny Diaz, was a champion soccer player.

  • Ramiro Rodriguez had no intention of auditioning when he agreed to drive his cousin to the casting tryouts for “McFarland, USA.” He landed the role of Danny Diaz after being pestered repeatedly by executive producer Mario Iscovich to audition.

  • Sergio Avelar is a bona fide runner and a member of the McFarland Track Club. He has been running since 2001 and considers himself a “decent runner.” One of his coaches in middle school was actually Thomas Valles, the real-life person represented by the role that Carlos Pratts plays.

  • Actor Rafael Martinez, who is by nature soft-spoken and polite, admits that he cut school in order to audition for the movie. Needless to say, having won a role, he has no regrets.

  • Prior to the start of principal photography, director Niki Caro organized an informal gathering for the on-screen White clan that proved insightful for her and the actors. In pre-production she assembled the actors together—Kevin Costner, Maria Bello, Morgan Saylor and Elsie Fisher—and had them play Monopoly as a family unit. The interesting exercise kick-started a family dynamic that lasted for the entire shoot.

Family Friendly Myrtle Beach

Check out the full post on Vacatia!

Myrtle beach is a great family vacation destination, but it has more then just miles of beautiful beaches.  For those who want to visit, but aren’t sure what to do beyond the beach and boardwalk (which are beautiful, and of course need to have ample time spent on them) let’s talk about the diverse and vivacious

There is an old side to this historic city that mixes smoothly with the beach side fun to create a one-of-a-kind destination you and your family will want to return to again and again.

The Myrtle Beach State Park Piers are said to be the best fishing spots in Myrtle Beach.  Popular with locals too, you don’t need to get a license ahead of time and fishing supplies are available on site for your convenience.  Bring your own poles, or there are some available for purchase or rental as well.  I think it’s vital for every kid to have at least one photo of themselves with “the catch of the day”, don’t you?  Something they caught themselves- with help from mom and dad, maybe.

Myrtle Beach 138

The views from the piers are some of the best from the city, so even if you’re not fishing you’ll be glad you stopped by. Myrtle Beach State Park Pier is a quiet and green ( both literally and from an environmental standpoint) beach spot, that is actually an oceanfront maritime forest.  This spot is complete with campgrounds, nature trail, fishing, and more, you and your family will love this place.  If you are campers, you will want to make reservations- there is both traditional camping as well as cabins available on the property as well.   On site is a wonderful and well maintained educational center that is both hands on and fun for not only the children, but the adults in the group as well. One of the best centers of it’s kind I have seen in a park this size (and many bigger and better funded as well), this is a point of pride and passion of the local staff and ranger, and a real must-do when in the area.

Getting Your Kids To Bed

Getting the kids to go to bed, and to STAY in bed, can be one of the hardest times of any parent’s day.  Starting, and keeping, a bedtime routine is always ideal- but what to do when that doesn’t do the trick?  Sometimes, having just the right “helper” is what the Sandman ordered.

Check out some of these fun and innovative new products for bedtime and beyond.

BODYARMOR Sports Drink

The following is a review which was facilitated with a sample and coupons from the sponsor.  All opinions are my own.

Are you tired of your kids grabbing for brightly colored sodium filled sports drinks?  Why is it OK for sports drinks to be brightly colored, but you would never accept that for your fruit juice?  The answer is, that it isn’t OK.  Food dyes are food dyes, and the bright colors are not natural.  Maybe in a field in the Spring, but not being chugged by your 10 year old.  So why not grab for a more naturally geared sports drink, like one from BODYARMOR.

BODYARMOR has a line of sports drinks out now which are all natural and based on coconut water.  With coconut water, you know the vitamin content is going to be high, as will be the potassium levels and the amount of electrolytes.  You get 200% RDI of vitamin B3, B5, B6, B9, B12 and 100% of vitamins A, C, and E.  The electrolytes help  maintain fluid balance, muscle contraction and nervous system activity, all of which are very important during physical activity.  The big difference between BODYARMOR and other sports drinks is the electrolytes- instead of using sodium, they use potassium, which has been found to be lacking in many athletes.  Some of the athletes who use BODYARMOR include: Mike Trout, Andrew Luck, James Harden, Buster Posey, Rob Gronkowski, Kevin Love, Richard Sherman, Skylar Diggins, and Sydney LeRoux.
