Why the English are Picky about Beds

The following is a guest post from Patric Seeley.

If you’ve ever gone bed shopping with a Brit, you might have noticed a lot of going back and forth about
a certain manufacturer or a certain model. Among all online shoppers, Brits tend to be more scrutinizing
of product descriptions and specifications than others. This is why most online bed and mattress
retailers who cater to UK buyers do take the time to make their website as detailed as informative as
they possible.

But what exactly motivates the English to be rather picky about their beds? A research commissioned by
the National Sleep Council a few years ago had some rather revealing answers, while we provided the
humor and conjecture.

Compared to the rest of the world, the British are less likely to take sleeping pills. About 7%
of British people pop sleep aids while about 18% of people from other countries resort to
pharmaceuticals if they are having trouble with sleep. This means that for the most part, the
British will have less tolerance for an uncomfortable bed or mattress because they need to be
comfy in order to get in the right mood for sleeping.

The British are also more likely to go to bed without anything on. As you could probably
imagine, scratchy bed linens and bare skin don’t mix well together. It can be expected that
people who sleep in the buff would find beddings with high thread counts to be a worthy
investment, especially during the summer, when an estimated 51% of adults wear their birthday
suits and nothing else.

About 39% of adults perceive “relations” to be an effective sleeping aid. (Incidentally, this may also
explain the relatively lower reliance on sleeping pills.) And for people who have err.. more
trouble sleeping than most, sturdy bed frames and supportive mattresses do earn their [Read more…]

@MrDad Takes on P&G

The following is an excerpt from Mr. Dad/Armin Brott’s column.
Please read on, and if you are so moved, continue on to his website for the rest and sign the petition.

“Four years ago, at the Beijing Olympic Games, Procter & Gamble’s ad campaign was “Proud Sponsor of Moms.” I complained loud and long about that one—how leaving dads out in such a glaring way was insulting and demeaning.
Now they’re back, and are ramping up their insulting, demeaning message a few notches. P&G’s campaign for the upcoming London Summer Olympics? “Thank you, Mom.” Excuse me? Only mom? Again? Really? How ’bout “Thank you, Mom and Dad.” Apparently not. As far as P&G is concerned, dads simply don’t exist…..

Now, don’t get me wrong. [Read more…]

Campsite’s near Festivals

One of the best ways of knowing when summer’s arrived is when music festivals are being held. The
UK is one of the best places in the world to go watch live music, and no festival experience would
be complete without camping. However, while camping at the festival site can be fun, maybe it’s
better and more convenient to go to the festival venue from nearby campsites and caravan parks
from pitchup.com, where you have more space and more things to do before the first act takes to
the stage.

There are a number of benefits of staying at proper camping sites over camping at the festival itself.
One of those is the fact that you do not have to queue for ages to use some of the on-site facilities
such as toilets and shower rooms. Also, you have more space to roam, and campsites tend to be
much more peaceful than [Read more…]

It is springtime, know what that means? Summer is around the corner, so it is almost time for barbeque and lazy, hot days by the pool. But with those lazy days, comes the realization that there have been a bit too many of them and the yard needs some work.

From decks to fences to outdoor furniture it can all use a coat of some some good stain. Either to freshen it up and change the yard up a bit or to add that finishing touch to an already gorgeous outdoor piece. The leaders in wood stain is Flood

Text4Baby Offers Health Information to Expectant Mothers

Another Mother’s Day is nearly upon us, and what most new mothers (or mothers-
to-be) could use more than flowers, cards, and even jewelry is the helpful information
provided by the Text4Baby program (okay, go ahead and throw in the jewelry if you
must). In truth, this program is 100% free for anyone with a cell phone; provided you
have coverage with one of the 18 carriers listed on the website, the text messages they
send you will not count against your plan limits. But what is this program and what can it
do for expectant moms?

If knowledge is power, then this program can give pregnant women the diadem
and scepter of parenthood. Every mother’s fondest wish is that her child be healthy
and happy, and by providing you with frequent and targeted health updates, advice,
and reminders (sent to your mobile phone), this program will help you to make the
choices that are best for your health and that of your unborn child. It was developed
in conjunction with Johnson & Johnson (a founding sponsor), the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, or CDC (which provided pertinent information for updates), and
CTIA – The Wireless Foundation, a nonprofit organization acting on behalf of members
in the wireless community (bringing technology to the table). And with these strange
bedfellows working in concert, a program was created to bring important knowledge to
moms that could use a little help on the health front.

The program works quite simply by sending out text messages containing helpful
health information to expectant and new mothers. All you need is a phone that can
receive text messages to get started and you can sign up via the Text4Baby website or
by texting BABY (or BEBE, para [Read more…]
