Educational Weekend Activities for Kids

School may be five days a week, but when it comes to learning, no one should ever take a vacation. Even
on the weekends, when you’re home with your kids, there are fun and educational activities that you can
do. You don’t need a lesson plan, just a little bit of inspiration to point you into the right direction.

Take a Day Trip

Zoology is the study of animals. Why not take the kids to the zoo? If they’re in a science class, it’s always a
winner to visit a science museum. Maybe their teacher is educating them on botany (the study of plants).
If so, there are more and more places that are erecting community gardens. Or maybe they’re in an art
class. If so, when’s the last time that you checked out an art exhibit at a local gallery? The fun thing about
options like these is that while in a school setting, kids are often sitting at a desk and reading about
various subjects, an educational outing with the family, gives them more of a hands on experience in more
of relaxed setting.

Create Your Own Card Games

A little bit of construction paper can go a really long way. If you want to help develop a child’s memory,
get some magazines, cut out some pictures and glue them to some 5×7 index cards or cut some pieces
of paper down to that size. Turn the pictures over one at a time and then flip them back. See who can
remember which pictures were where. Another idea is if you want to help them learn how to read better,
another set of cards can be made with words on them that teach spelling, enunciation and the definitions.
For each word said and defined correctly, give a point and at the end of the game; to whomever has the
most points, give a prize. Another cool way to use handmade cards is to create your own scavenger hunt
that has instructions on the front like “Look in the hallway closet” or “Check underneath the kitchen table”
for items. What are your kids learning? How to follow directions.

Check Out Some Sports

@Natures_Sleep Dog Bed

Have you ever taken a cat nap on a dog bed? Or maybe curled up on a pillow by the fire place and thought, “Wow, my for legged companion has the right idea.” This new pet bed by Nature’s Sleep will definitely have you questioning whether you want to sleep with your snoring significant other or curl up at the foot of the bed and have the dog sleep up there. (For me? I’m thinking the dog is the better bet….)

We will go from the bottom up to describe them- number one, the bottom is skid resistant. No longer will your pooch take a flying dive into their bed and bonk their head [Read more…]

Annie will soon be Returning to Broadway!

Maybe you live far away, or maybe real near by- but either way, you are definitely going to want to mark your calendars for the return of America’s sweetheart- Annie!

If you can believe it, as a lover of musicals and the theater in general- I have never seen Annie on Broadway. Well, maybe you can believe it. Annie opened in 1977, and closed it’s doors in 1983, which would have made me a tiny baby 🙂
Inspired by the famous comic strip Little Orphan Annie, this show will celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the show’s opening with a full revival.

In just about 270 days, Annie will be back on Broadway. You know I will be there- and so will my Little Man! He’s my Broadway Baby- and I hope that you bring your kids, too. It’s never too early to start exposing your children to the magic of the theater. (Start with the movie if they have never seen it- it’s a classic, they need to watch it anyway!) This feel-good show will be the one everyone is sure to be talking about.
In less then one year, ANNIE arrives on Broadway!? Check out the website, Facebook, and Twitter and keep yourself in the loop.

Think Geek’s Newest Awesome!

This edition of Think Geek’s awesome is full of stuff for the ‘big kids’. Be they fans of fuzzy critters from the 80’s or beverages with a modern flair, even a little madness. Think Geek always has all your new favorites, reviewed by daddy.

First we start with Fizzgig. Some of you may be asking what a Fizzgig is, well it is a cute little critter full of razor sharp teeth from the classic film Dark Crystal. For a child of the 80’s this is perfect. He is small and cute and his head flaps open to reveal a ton of teeth all waiting to chomp you. But its OK if Kira is around, he’ll behave himself. Fizzgig is a soft plush about the size of a basketball, and there is a spot of Velcro to keep his mouth closed when no chomping. He is high quality and safe for nap time. No hard pieces except his big yellow eyes.

For the ladies out there we have a little bit of madness with the mad hatter and the original crazy ‘dame’ Alice. Check out this shirt. It is a deep purple color with the timeless scene where Alice first meets the Cheshire Cat. Or rather first meets his smile. The shirt is for women and is fit for them. It’s [Read more…]
