Shadow Puppets

There is an odd occurrence in our house when we get something for Little Man that he isn’t as excited for as we expected. When this happens, either he is right or a more special moment occurs and that is Dad saves the day.   In doing so, Dad gets him super excited about said item within moments.  One of those moments recently was with the Magicforest Dinosaur shadow puppet set.

Upon first examination Little Man thought they were interesting but didn’t really see these were puppets or how these were more fun then his giant furry puppets.  That is, until Daddy came along with some dinosaur hand puppets and the shadow puppet set and his imagination.  The tale weaved was simple and straight forward about friendship and sharing between a T Rex and a stegosaurus, but the fact that he showed the little guy how to use the shadow puppets led to Little Man crafting his own tale of wonder, espionage and tooting.  Yep.

Fun New Toys From NY Toy Fair

02 16 14 302

NY Toy Fair was last week, and I’ve shared a few posts (and plenty on social media!) with you already about what we saw and did there.  Here are a few fun products that we got to take home and try out, and my son says are his favorites of the bunch.

new skylanders

The new “Dune” Skylander, which is available in stores in the blue and gold colors above.  It interacts with the Skylanders portal for your game station of choice, and plays with all the characters in the series.

Lil Bub Cat toy

The Lil Bub stuffed cat toy was a big hit with my son- it also came with a book about Lil Bub, where the cat explains his life on another planet.  My husband considers this book an exercise in insanity, while my son loves it and finds it hilarious.  Go figure!  My son has been toting this cat about since he got it- you may have seen it in our recent aquarium or museum posts or social media shares. Lil Bub is quite a popular kitty!

Barbie

My girls are finally reaching the age that they like to play with Barbies. I must mention that I am very excited about this stage that we have finally reached. I loved Barbies as a child and I have been very excited about all of the neat Barbies that are available now. I was lucky enough to be able to receive Barbie Potty Trainin’ Taffy to do a review on.

About Barbie ‘Potty Trainin’ Taffy’:

Barbie loves her dog Taffy. Taffy is absolutely adorable with her pretty pink, removable collar and flopped ears. Your child will have the opportunity to help Barbie care for her dog with the Barbie Potty Training Taffy set. The set includes everything that you need to properly handle the basics: feeding, walking, and cleaning up.

Feeding Time: You can start out with a box of treats that fits perfectly in Barbie’s hand. You can put the bones in the dog bowl, or feed them straight to the dog and you can store them in Taffy’s pink backpack.

Marvel Super Hero Mashers Giveaway

I am sure as a kid you have had the conversation of who would win in a fight?  The way this works is a few kids get into a  group an d ask who would win in a fight, this person or this person.  Usually its something like Captain America or Spider-man.  The conversation inevitably moves to the comparison to themselves with different powers using them on one another.  This mixing of powers is the central concept of Marvel Super Hero Mashers.  The new toy line takes familiar characters like The Incredible Hulk and Spider-Man and gives them interchangeable limbs and torsos to the point where A single figure can sport Iron Man’s legs, Spider-Man’s arms, Hulk’s head and Captain America’s torso.

There are approximately thirteen regular figures with which kids can switch parts with also an extra seven figures which includes accessories like missile launchers, and other battle gear to complement your hero of choice.

What’s New in Toys? Plenty.

New York Toy Fair was this past week at the Jacob Javits Center in (you guessed it!) New York City.  Host to the worlds largest gathering of toys and games, organized by the Toy Industry Association, hundreds of toy manufacturers and game publishers gather to show off their recent and upcoming products to retailers, buyers, and the press. The New York Toy Fair is filled with nearly every toy, game, form of electronic entertainment, and outdoor play thing you can imagine. With roughly 100,000 products and 7,000 new toy debuts (not to mention 30,000 “play professionals” from more then 100 countries) NY Toy Fair is a wonderland for your inner child.

With all these toys, we wondered what was new for this year. Some things, like the very popular monsters, zombies, mustaches, and duct tape crafts are still holding strong, with plenty of new dolls, kits, toys, and you name it coming out this year in every shape and size.  You name, it, it can be found with a mustache.

Expanding this year are apps and virtual worlds of every kind.  Every toy, every game, every-everything has a virtual aspect to it.  Have a teddy bear?  Here’s an app to go with it. New robot?  App.  Learning Portuguese?  There’s an app to go with that.  There are even toothbrushes with apps- I’m not kidding you.  I’m waiting on an app for apps.  An app organizer, perhaps?  Because I’m app-ed out, app-arently.

Also trending this year are interactive talking toys (dolls or bears or robots that talk back to you, do as you request, and sometimes sing and tell stories), unicorns (nearly every major manufacturer has at least one, as a doll’s “pet” or as it’s own stand alone product), and anything retro. Some toys, like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, are back with a new look- some, like the Fisher Price dial up rotary phone, looks the way it did the first time it came out decades ago- right up to it’s packaging.

Got a crafty kid?  There is every kind of weaving kit you can imagine, and from every brand big or small. Weaving rugs, potholders, bracelets, scarves- really anything and everything.  This is building on the success of the Rainbow Loom, one of the TOTY’s toy of the year award winners for 2014.  If you have not heard of this toy yet- where have you been?  There are plenty to choose from- take the kids and choose your poison.  Want to take it up a notch?  The variety of jewelry making kits is as wide as the Sochi Olympics building difficulties.  From things that you could actually get your mother to enjoy wearing to the standard sting of colored wood and glitter, you can find something to suit your little designer. Bead/peg kits are also going to be all the rage this year, with not only jewelry kits but craft kits, stained glass makers, 3D pictures, and more- all made with beads, pegs, or “dots”.

MOM, I’m Bored (Ideas to Squash the Whineys)

Snowed in? Stuck home with endless “snow days” and “no school days” this winter? It’s been a brutal and snow-covered season for much of the country this year.  What to do to break up the boredom?  A new toy will get the kiddos off your back (for at least a little while- take what quiet you can get!)

Some fun new finds include;

The Power Rangers Mega Force Giant 31″ Red Ranger Action Figure by Jakks Pacific Inc.  Available online, at WalMart, or Toy R Us, this Power Ranger is huge and features seven points of articulation that lets you put it into a number of poses.  He is more then half the size of my 6 year old, but is not very heavy, making it easy to play with.  It’s giant size let’s it do things that the smaller action figures can’t, such as cook with kids in the play kitchens, sit next to them to watch TV, and jump out behind doors to scare their mothers.  This (as you might have guessed) is my son’s new favorite activity.  While I am no longer startled (although I need to pretend to be each time, of course) it’s hysterical to him every time.  He also likes to tuck it in under a blanket on the couch, or leave it in the bathtub (so he is clean for his next mission?) from time to time.   It makes an excellent play-in-the-snow toy because it is too large to lose.  He stands on his own, and is large enough to be a “Godzilla” type destroyer of block cities and action figures- another of my son’s favorite activities.  $30

Looking for something adorable to give your love this Valentine’s Day?  My son and I both adore stuffed animals, and so do many women and kids- so you know that these will be a hit for many on your list.  Try as I might, I still love a sweet stuffed animal.  I don’t get many for myself anymore, but that doesn’t mean I don’t like them or wouldn’t love one as a gift now and again  🙂

Pink Promise is available in four huggable sizes (10.5”, 12”, 14”; 22”, SRP: $20, $24, $33 and $72 respectively).  My son loves his sweet pachyderm, who is super soft and snugly.  It’s uber plush fur and floppy ears are cuddly and fun to play with or take to bed at night (or pass out on the couch with while watching a movie on a snow day, LOL). Also, it can go “on parade” with the pink elephants of Dumbo, which of course did not escape my son’s mind  🙂

VALENTINES DAY TOYS

YooHoo & Friends™: Luvee™, an endangered chimpanzee, joins Aurora’s best selling plush line (more than 23 million sold) as a three-color assortment. Luvee hugs a slightly askew heart, each with a different message including “Love U”, “Be Mine” and “XOXO!” Each makes a “smooch” sound when squeezed (5”, SRP: $9).  They make a “kissing” sound when you hug their bellies, and have adorable expressions and large eyes.  YooHoo are a lot of fun to collect as well, and come in a wide assortment of creatures and colors.  These are great for a collector or way to start your collection, and are very affordable.  My son loves this line, and has since he was very young.
