Tips to Save on Trips to London

Gal S5 06 30 14 088Traveling to Europe can be a strain on the wallet if you aren’t careful.  With so many new things to try and do, trying to squeeze them all in can be as stressful as work.  When you factor in paying for these wonderful meals, sights, activities, and locations, the stress really increases.  Check out these tips and tricks while in Europe, and in particular London, to save some of that hard earned money and thoroughly enjoy your trip.

Tip 1.  Plan. Plan Plan.

Do not travel by the seam of your pants.  Make plans and stick to them.  Unless you are exploring for lunch be sure to do what you planned to while on your trip.  This helps by giving you a general idea of how much you will be spending in advance as well as knowing what you want to do ahead of time.  If schedules aren’t your thing on vacation, at least having an idea of fun locations in the area will help out immensely as well.  Find the less pricey budget hotels in London instead of spending money hand over fist once you get there.

Halloween Around the World

Traditional_Irish_halloween_Jack-o'-lantern

Halloween is traditionally celebrated in the United States on October 31st.  Halloween in the US centers around costumes and trick or treating, parties and fun for families in the day and adults at night time.  The costumes are available just about everywhere from places like Mr. Costumes to the local pharmacy.  Candy is available everywhere and parties are easy to find and even easier to throw yourself.  We all know how Halloween looks in the United States but what about in other countries, or other continents.  Lets take a look at Halloween in 4 countries.

First up we will visit the Philippines.  In the Philippines as of now Trick or Treating is becoming the tradition of choice for more modern people in the country but some still celebrate All Saints Day by Pangangaluluwà.  Which involved groups going home to home singing songs of Purgatory and accepting food and money to help pay for the masses of the dead.  Also items may move from the yard or around the house to other areas and this is thought to be the souls of those lost visiting the living by moving the items.

Traveling With Allergies

Read the full post on Kitchenology.com!

We travel often, and enjoy doing so.  We find any and every reason to go someplace new, try a new place, and new foods.  For many people, that part can be tricky- well, the whole travel experience can be. Like a growing number, I have an allergy that makes eating out sometimes difficult.  However, allergies don’t need to stop you from enjoying travel or trying new foods- they just require you to be a little more careful when doing so.

My husband and son enjoying some seafood in Cape Cod- I had the burger and fries and a lovely evening with my family.

I personally have a seafood allergy.  While I am traveling in the Midwest, this is not a problem.  Visiting Florida, the Bahamas, or really any island can be an adventure in eating.  Most of the menus are based on the easiest fare and what is the freshest, and least expensive to bring to the table- seafood.  For many, this is a great time to have the shellfish that is pricey or unavailable back home- for me, it’s trying to find “that thing” or two on the menu that doesn’t have scallops or conch in it.  Variety is the spice of life, but not an option when you need to steer clear of certain foods in certain places. It might not be what the specialty of the area or restaurant is, but it’s better then having to cook yourself, true?  Make do with what is available and you will still enjoy your trip, no point in staying home and letting life pass you by.

Making the Most of a London Trip

London is a big city full of fun and adventure if you know where to look.  As any seasoned traveler will tell you, to really get to know a location, you must first check out the tourist spots like the London Eye, Madame Tussaud’s, and the Tower of London.  However, you must also check out some local hot spots to get a feel for the city.

Not only should you be the typical tourist and snap a million pictures of every nifty thing you see, but you should also take some time to explore and look around you without the camera lens to filter it.  Fine dining is great but so are small hole in the wall cafes full of locals and wonderful smells.

The key to being both the tourist and experiencing the local is locations.  You need to find central hotels in London in order to able to easily access everything.  Also ask around, there are tons of people to meet on while on travel so be friendly.  Don’t lock yourself in at night, talk to the employees at the hotel as well as other travelers and locals.  Find someone who seems like minded, and ask them about fun things to do.  Sometimes this works well, other times not so much- but this all part of the adventure of traveling.

Creating a Smart Home and Lower Bills

Thanks to Direct Energy for sponsoring today’s discussion.

As Google starts to enter the foray of home modernization it is clear the home of the future is a ‘smarter’ home.  Does this mean we install a brain in your house, and a good one at that?  What this means is, a more connected home which is aware of the world around it.  The way this works is through smart phone interfaces and internet connectivity.  Programmable thermostats, Smart Power strips for your devices, using dimmer switches, or installing a Nest Learning Thermostat, there are lots of options out there and the list goes on and on..

The category I see as most useful would probably be the smart thermostat and smart power strips.  Both of which will bring your home into the future but also give you added security to your home.  Doing so will make my busy life a little bit easier.  The smart thermostat lets the users change the temperature of the their home from afar.  So your home will always be comfortable to you when you get home.  It will also keep energy consumption to a minimum as well.
