Taking Time to be a Dad Today @fatherhood.gov #fatherhood

The more involved a dad is, the more successful his children are. A father’s influence can determine a child’s social life, academic achievement, and future achievements.

Eighty-six percent of dads spend more time with their children today than their own fathers did with them, but a majority of dads (7 out of 10) also reported that they could use tips on how to be a better parent, according to a national survey conducted by the Ad Council. Children with involved, loving fathers are significantly more likely to do well in school, have healthy self-esteem, exhibit empathy and pro-social behavior, and avoid high-risk behaviors such as drug use, truancy, and criminal activity compared to children who have uninvolved fathers.

DreamWorks Animation donated their time, talent and resources for the campaign, which features footage and characters from the Kung Fu Panda 3 film. In the upcoming film, Po, the franchise protagonist, reunites with his long-lost birth father. The story highlights the special relationship between father and son and shows the unique challenges that Po is able to overcome with the love and support of his father.

My Favorite Hacks For Cleaning Up After Your Kids

Like you, I’ve had my fair share of kiddie messes to clean up over the years. The more you have to clean up, the more you feel like preventing the kids having as much fun. I don’t want to be the Mom that stifled the kids’ creativity. I want them let loose, run riot and enjoy being kids. Kids are supposed to be messy. But I just don’t have time to clean endlessly. After all, I want to have fun with the kids too.

One of my favorite discoveries in the last few months has to be oilcloths. These are very thick, durable tablecloths that can cope with heat and mess without damage. I love that they come in so many gorgeous designs as well. You can get fun and colorful ones, or try one to better match your decor. The wipe clean so easy, and you don’t need to worry about table mats when you’re having a coffee.
A plastic mat on the floor under the table catches all those splashes and play-doh crumbs that make your floor a disaster zone. Whatever the kids are doing, something always ends up on the floor. It doesn’t matter whether you have carpets or tiles. An old plastic party tablecloth or messy play covering on the floor is ideal.

100_2440

I got rid of the carpets in the house years ago because of all the stains that I just couldn’t get rid of. They looked tatty and old and dirty all the time. Tiles and hardwood floors are much easier to keep clean. If you ask me what is the best vacuum cleaner to buy for hardwood floors, I would say that you should still choose power and maneuverability over cost. This ensures even the tiniest dust particles are removed every time from any floor.

Children love to play with messy things. It might only be water, but once they’re soaked, you have to get out yet another fresh set of clothing. Waterproof coverall aprons are ideal no matter what they’re doing. Just like the tablecloth or plastic floor mats, you can hang them on the washing line and hose them down to get them clean again. Best of all, there’s no need for spare sets of clothes.
When it comes to taking care of the floors, I know I have to be careful. The kids are always rolling around on the floor, playing with cars and blocks and things. Steam mopping is a must for me. There are no chemicals, and there’s no mop bucket to worry about. You just pour in some water, switch it on and go. Quick and easy and safe. I love it.

To be honest, though, I prefer keeping messy play playing in the garden when it’s a nice day. If the paints and clays they’re using are safe for the kids, I doubt they’ll do much harm to the lawn or flowers. There is far more space out there for them to have fun as well. I’ve got a lovely foldaway table they can take out there with a couple of matching chairs. It’s easy to wipe clean because it’s plastic. Then it all comes apart for easy storage in the cupboard or garage.

The kids love making dens. I don’t mind moving the furniture around a little to set the mood, or prop up the sheets! Of course, putting it all back and tidying up the sheets again is a bit of a bother. Folding sheets isn’t beyond even the smallest children, and it’s good practice for them to do it too. Moving the furniture is too much for the kids to do, but I take advantage of their new position by vacuuming the areas they usually sit on!

If you’ve ever wished you could just sit back and relax after you’ve got the kids to bed, then try out my easy hack for a tidy room. About twenty minutes before bath time, get the kids to pop their toys back into a toy box. You can use a plastic container instead. There’s no need to sort things or put items in lots of different places. But it can be more fun if you ask them to put all the red things in first. Or maybe you’re looking for all the toys that have wheels first! You can create a little song and have a factory line to pass the toys along to the box.

Big plastic containers for toys are so useful. You can select a few toys to go in each one. Then rotate which container comes out each day. Confining the play to just one tub of toys saves you clearing up and sorting out a huge mess later. You could pack the containers by category. Trains and cars in one, and blocks and books in another. But encourage the kids to put them all back before changing to the next tub.

Unusual Ways To Keep Your Home Toasty For The Rest Of The Winter

pic4

The winter is normally the worst time of year because it is cold. The weather changes dramatically, and staying warm becomes an issue. Houses are infamous for letting the weather conditions affect their temperature. Thankfully, you don’t need to shiver in silence any longer. All you have to do is follow these weird yet wonderful tips. If you do, your home will be toasty warm.

Enjoy!

Cover The Keyhole

The keyhole may look insignificant, but it is where heat displacement takes place. The little hole in the door is enough to let cold into your home that then mixes with the warm air. As the cold air is stronger, it overpowers the warm air. The result is that your home transforms into an igloo. All you have to do to stop it is block the keyhole with tin foil. In fact, any draft that you can feel needs blocking to stop the heat from dissipating.

Waterproof Your Property

The key to staying warm is to stay dry. And, you may think that is not hard, yet the reality is a lot different. Lots of properties are not properly waterproofed, and they are colder as a result. The moisture brings in the cold air, and the heat dissipates again leaving the house feeling colder. To stop it, waterproof the relevant parts of your property. If you are not sure what they are, the web page http://www.hydraway.net/uses/residential-waterproofing will provide more answers.

Swap The Blinds For Curtain

Blinds are not good at blocking heat because they are mainly wood or plastic. Both these materials are not great absorbers of heat, unlike fabric. Curtains are fabric, and the material is brilliant at stopping the heat from escaping. The particles get trapped in the thick layers and some rebound back into the house. Regardless, your home will benefit from thick, layered curtains over cold blinds.

Unblock The Windows

It may be winter, but the sun is still shining. You want to take advantage of the sun’s UV rays by keeping the windows clear during the day. This tactic may not seem like much, but it does work. And, it is also one of the most energy efficient tactics at your disposal. There is nothing better than a hack that warms the house and saves money.

Paint The Exterior

Painting the exterior is science at work. You know that dark, matte colors are better at conducting heat right? That means you want dark, matte colors on the outside of your home. The paint will absorb the heat straight into the house and instantly make it feel warmer. Although it takes a lot of effort, it is well worth it to keep the cold at bay. To find more about what colors absorb heat, check out https://www.colormatters.com/color-and-heat-absorption.

Get A Log Burner

Central heating systems are expensive, which is why you need a cheaper alternative. A log burner is that alternative. Not only does it burn wood, which is cheap, but it also gives off lots of heat. And, the heat will reach every room in the house if you keep it open.

Balancing Life with a Cat, Nine Lives starring Kevin Spacey

Life/Work balance, unplugging and making time for family each day (Storytime, dinnertime, special movie night, etc.)

There was a recent commercial for a car, about how we work too hard and asks the question, “When did it become bad to leave on time?”  This commercial made me laugh because it is precisely what I hear and see every day.  People staying late every day is just wrong and a very difficult pattern to stop.  With expectations getting higher as more people are let go, work can try to bite into family time often.  Not paying you for spending more of your time there, either, of course. This can lead to more stress at home and definitely more irritability.  So a balance must occur, you don’t want to end up missing all the fun stuff to be somewhere more stressful.  You may end up as a cat….

If any hope exists of returning to his family as the husband and father they deserve, Tom will have to learn why he has been placed in this peculiar situation and the great lengths he must go to earn back his human existence.  This movie looks like its going to be fun to watch and it has everyone’s favorite Christopher Walken of course.

Beautiful Gifts Handmade in Peru With Novica

It can be hard to choose a gift for your loved one.  You want to give something special, something they will love.  If it’s pretty, that much the better. Novica is the perfect place to find that perfect item.  Not only are items hand crafted, which means they will each be unique and totally one of a kind, but they also support local artisans (who you get to know in a little “story card” that comes with your purchase).  You see a portrait and a biography of the artist on the page of the item when you buy it, and when your gift is opened, they will read the card and make the discovery as well.

20160109_143825

My son, who happens to be my favorite little Valentine, helped me choose a special gift for his Godmother, a very special person in his life.  He wanted to choose something she would really love, and he thought she would love the Andean Folk Art Cotton Applique Change Purse, ‘Butterfly Afternoon’. Quite a mouthful for a small purse, but it’s very pretty and not at all common.  My son is very picky and deliberate in choosing gifts- he really wants to make sure to choose the right gift for the right person.  We both think she will love the purse, with it’s bright colors and sunny, hand stitched scenery.

It arrived carefully wrapped in beautiful paper, with a red ribbon and a tiny doll in the center.  It was very festive (and honestly, very cool looking).  It looked expensive,  like someone had really put time into it very carefully.  He can’t wait to give his  Valentine’s Day gift!

This beautiful, functional work of art was created by Balvina Huaytalla who lives and works in the Peru.  Her work is inspired by the Peruvian Andes, and she wishes to share it’s beauty with everyone. She is a single mother who is struggling to take care of her young son, and this and every purchase helps her make a living.

There were a few things that caught my eye as well while we were looking around- it’s hard not to be distracted by all the beautiful products.  These Gold Accent Heart Shaped Earrings would be perfect for Valentine’s Day, or really any day out.  They are so pretty, I had to send a little “hint” over to my husband.  The only thing better then a beautiful gift is one that gives back.  Lovely, traditional art (some you can even wear) that embraces local artisans, doesn’t use bad labor practices, and helps others live sustainably- so much awesome with one purchase.

How to Plan an Unforgettable Vacation

How to Plan an Unforgettable Vacation

From time to time, everyone needs a good vacation. Because vacations are often expensive, it is important to take time to prepare and plan. Whether you choose to visit the beautiful Six Senses Spa (advised upon by Mukesh Valabhji) or travel to a unique city, the following tips can help you plan an unforgettable experience.

Determine What You Want

To begin with, it is important to identify what you want out of your vacation. Everyone is different, and certain things matter more to certain people. Ask yourself the following questions to better understand what your ideal vacation entails:

  • Do you want adventure or relaxation?
  • Are you interested in visiting a new place?
  • Do you want to go somewhere close or travel across the world?
  • How much time do you have for this vacation?
  • What do you want to do during this vacation – sightsee, sleep, outdoor activities, etc.?

Plan the Details

Once you know what you want, it is much easier to plan the details of the trip. Start by choosing the destination. Then, decide where you want to stay and for how long. While you are planning, you should also decide whom you are going with. Then, plan the smaller details including food and activities. Once you have all of these details, you can book your airfare and accommodations. You may even want to look for travel deals during this time.

Prepare

A little preparation before the trip can be extremely beneficial and it often promotes a better overall experience. Some important things to prepare include your itinerary, clothing, toiletries, luggage, and any necessary travel documents such as a passport. Make sure you do not leave this prep work until the last minute. If you do, your stress prior to the vacation will be much higher.

Research the Destination

Good preparers often research the destination ahead of time. A little research is especially helpful if you have never been to the area. You can educate yourself about the culture and language. Also, determine what the main form of transportation is and what the weather will be like when you arrive. This will help you easily acclimate to the area when you arrive.

Be Realistic With Your Expectations

Sometimes people put too much pressure on the vacation, hoping for a near-perfect experience. Traveling comes with ups and downs, and it is important to understand this. Try not to let the things you cannot control ruin your fun. Sometimes things happen, and it is common for flights to be delayed or a restaurant to disappoint. The good news is when you are realistic these minor inconveniences do not take a toll on the entire trip.

Enjoy the Moments

When you set realistic expectations, it is easier to have a great time and enjoy the moments. Remember, even the simplest activities are often worthwhile. Whether you hike a mountain or sit outside and enjoy the view, these are moments you cannot take back. They are also a lot more appealing than the day-to-day activities of regular life.

There is a reason vacations are so appealing and sought after. Make yours an unforgettable one by following this helpful guide.

Road Trip With the 2016 Mazda 6

Over the course of one of our recent excursions, we were given the opportunity to try out the new 2016 Mazda 6.  With tons of bells and whistles as well as a super efficient engine, the 2.5L SKYACTIV-G gasoline engine takes efficiency to a whole new performance level, with better EPA-estimated highway MPG than the competition.

20150918_150514

This car is a fun to drive, and the ride is smooth.  From the side front and rear radar, all your sides are covered and as long as you are careful, good driving is easy to do in such a safe environment.  The Mazda 6 also has the added benefit of a stellar safety system.

20150922_145746

This includes standard safety featureslike advanced front air bags, front side-impact air bags, side-impact air curtains*, Dynamic Stability Control* with Traction Control System, 4-wheel ABS with Electronic Brake force Distribution and Brake Assist, Available Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Traffic Alert*, Smart City Brake Support*, Smart Brake Support with Collision Warning*, Lane Departure Warning System*, High Beam Control, Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Close Proximity Warning*.

Overall this car was a blast to drive.  The handling felt like I was driving a larger car then I was, which kept me further from the vehicles around me (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing).  It was still something to get used to.

Especially since this is the first time I have had the pleasure of using the HUD to display speed and directions.  This is a small projected image on a see-though screen near the bottom of the windshield. This acts as a quick information window which can be glanced at while driving without distracting the driver.  (My husband loved it, he thought it was one of the coolest things about the car and he talked way too much about it- for me, it was a little unusual.)

It had a ton of trunk space, which really matters for any family. Perfect for travel, but also for those every day activities like shopping or heading to the grocery store. This model also had a GPS unit that was easy to use, and if you are like me, a necessity for getting from point A to point B once you are out of your comfort zone.  The front and back seats had lots of leg room- and head room.  My husband is nearly 6’4, and he was able to fit comfortably into the car without his head hitting the top. This is unusual.  For bigger people, it’s good to know.  My son had room in the back, even when I had my seat back.  We were all comfortable- something I can’t usually say in most cars.

Be sure to keep an eye out and check out the Mazda 6 at a local Mazda dealer near you.
