Join in healing together #MarchOfDimes

This is not a review or a sponsored in any way, shape, or form post. I am sharing this as it may be of interest and I myself walk and fundraise for the cause. Pay no attention to the auto script, it’s impossible to remove and just there so I don’t forget to add it to something I’m supposed to, LOL.

walk for babies

Please note, this email contains content about infant loss and may be difficult to read for anyone who has experienced or been personally affected by the loss of a child.

Today is an important day for me and for too many mothers, Samantha.

Today is National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day. It can be difficult for mothers and families experiencing loss to find a place to share their story and remember their little ones. There are few spaces where they can share their memories and grief in a community of others who understand what they’re going through.

That’s why I’m sharing my memory of my son Scott on the Wall of Remembrance.

In 2012, my husband and I became one of the thousands of families each year that is devastated by the loss of a child. After a healthy, “perfect” pregnancy, I stopped feeling my baby move at 37 weeks and my labor was induced. Scott was silent when he was born and did not respond to any treatment. After two weeks we made the devastating decision to remove him from life support.

In working through my grief and my own loss, I found an amazing community of other families through March of Dimes. Hearing their stories made me realize we don’t need to grieve in silence. We don’t need to face each day alone.

I’m adding my story to the March of Dimes Wall of Remembrance to pay tribute to Scott and to join the voices of those affected.

Read the stories and join in the fight to end infant loss.

March of Dimes is working to address pregnancy and infant loss in the U.S., which has significantly higher rates of loss than other developed nations. With your support, we can help prevent future families from dealing with unspeakable grief and save the lives of babies.

Donations help advance research, provide educational resources and support advocacy for policies to prioritize the health of all moms and babies.

(Personal note from me here at Have Sippy Will Travel, I’m walking and would love to have you walk as well or help donate to the cause.)

Together we’ll heal and provide a brighter future for us all,

Nicole Miller (March of Dimes)

Relay – A phone alternative for children

For parents of young kids, you will often feel pressure to buy your child a smartphone. What to do when you know your child is not ready, but you want to stay in contact with them? Relay is an option for parents who want to be able to stay connected to their kids, but don’t want even more of a battle over screen time or who know that their child is too young or otherwise not ready for a phone. You an also use it as a walkie talkie.
Age by Age Guide to Relay:Under 6, screens aren’t appropriate but young children can benefit from learning to communicate and will have fun with the walkie-talkie like features;
  • Learn responsibility and communication skills
  • Fun features for playtime (Echo Channel, Music)
  • Communicate throughout the house
  • Novelty of walkie-talkie like communication
Ages 6-7, kids in the early grades are off to friends for playdates after school and benefit from the security of staying in touch while also spreading their wings;
  • Give your child their first taste of independence; allow them to play in the neighborhood, ride bikes, see friends for playdates, etc. while being able to safely stay in touch with them
  • Monitor their whereabouts through GPS tracking
  • Enhance their playtime with friends via Instant Chat (chat channel between friends on different accounts) as well as Echo Channel, Music, etc.
Ages 8- 10, kids starting team sports benefit from the independence of this time away from home and starting to organize their own after school time
  • Communicate drop-off/pick-up for after-school activities
  • Ask permission for new opportunities
  • Independent communication with other family members (grandparents, etc.)
Ages 11-12, busy middle schoolers benefit from more freedom after school to visit with friends independently
  • Healthy and active social life
  • Provides all essentials without needing to access internet
  • Reverse negative trends and pressures such as less time spent on physical activities and outdoor endeavors
  • Thought leadership in tweens – helps tweens be leaders instead of followers
How it works:
  • Relay works over 4G LTE and Wi-Fi, so it has unlimited range and works everywhere a phone does. You could be in NYC talking to someone in California just as clearly as if you were in the same room.
  • It’s super simple to use: just press the button, talk and release
  • There are two other buttons on the side: one for volume and one for powering on off/changing channels
  • You can talk Relay to Relay, or Relay to app. The companion app is where you manage the Relays on your account – you can see where they are via GPS tracking, add channels to your account and talk directly with the Relays on your account

I have noticed a few issues with Relay- one is that they don’t hold a charge longer then 4-6 hours. Another is that they use a very unique charger, so if you lose it or forget it, that will be problematic for charging. A charging wire that is universal is always preferred for ease and so it is easily replaced when it is inevitable lost or damaged.

The biggest issue for me was that you, the parent, will need to have the app up and running on your phone at all times, or you can’t receive calls to your child(ren).  Along with the battery drain that causes, is the problem that you won’t always know when your child wants to call you, thus you will likely miss calls. I don’t know if there is a workaround for that, but I have not found one yet.

As you know that we prefer products that give back and/or are sustainable and fair, we are happy to tell you that Relay is donating $5 from each of the next 5,000 Relays sold will go to support Common Sense Education, the nation’s leading nonprofit organization dedicated to helping students harness technology for learning and life by providing teachers and schools with free research-based classroom tools.

About Egg’s New Gender Neutral Collection

Egg considers it a top priority to nurture little ones so that moms and dads can be sure that their children are dressed in the softest natural fabrics, and styles to suit every child’s special and unique personality. This is why Egg is launching their brand new gender-neutral collection for babies. To offer the latest trends and provide options for everyone.

Gender-neutral clothing is the perfect answer for expecting parents and their loved ones that prefer to wait until their little one comes into the world to discover their gender. These adorable pieces offer wonderful options for parents to prepare for their precious newborn’s arrival and make ideal gifts for friends and family to celebrate this exciting time.

Gender-neutral children’s clothing has also become popular with many families that choose to allow their little one’s personality and style to develop organically -without the pressure of traditional gender roles affecting their choices and aspirations.

As recent studies have shown that rigid gender expectations can have a negative impact on children later in life, some clothing brands and toy manufacturers are moving away from traditional pinks and blues and embracing more inclusive themes and colors to inspire young minds. A variety of celebrity parents have also adopted this concept, including Pink, Adele, Angelina Jolie, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Will Smith.

Egg wants to ensure their children’s ranges offer options that include all parenting ideals, and choices to suit the taste of every unique little one.

This collection is created in the softest natural fabrics to nurture delicate baby skin. Discover their cute sets, snuggly footies, cozy snowsuits, and the warmest winter accessories -all in the purest neutral colors. Visit Egg-Baby.com to learn more!

Take a Tour of the Oldest Restaurants in Germany

If you’re like most Americans, one of the best aspects of traveling is coming across sites and establishments that are older than all of the United States. Though Germany itself is only as old as some of the newer states, the country boasts eating establishments that are upwards of 900 years old. If you want to get a literal taste of history, check out these three oldest restaurants in all of Germany. They may be miles apart, but the atmosphere and food is worth investing in a rental car from CarRentals.com and making the drive.

Zum Roten Baren

Zum Roten Baren is hands-down the oldest restaurant in Germany, dating back to over 700 years ago. If you’re skeptical about the true age of this establishment, just ask the current landlord for a ledger that details precisely who ran the establishment and when over the past seven centuries. There are a total of 50, each with a tenure of 30 years or more. The name “Roten Baren” has remained the same since its inception, as too has much of the décor. However, the street outside has seen a significant change. From within the restaurant, you can see where the road line used to be 800 to 900 years ago, which is 3.6 m beneath the level it’s at today.

In addition to delicious and hearty traditional German fare, the restaurant also boasts an extensive wine collection, which is stored in the cellar that was there even before the restaurant. That said, if you’re looking for a fancy restaurant, this is not. If, however, you’re a person who appreciates history and all its quirks, you will love this place.

Zur letzten Instanz

Established in 1621, this Berlin restaurant is nowhere near as old as Zum Roten Baren, but then again, a restaurant probably doesn’t exist that is. Zur letzten Instanz has been run by the same family for four generations, with each generation working with the same goal in mind: to provide a place where people can gather, eat, and be merry. Despite being over 400 years old, much of the historic structure remains. In fact, according to the owner, Napoleon himself was served at the restaurant’s tiled stove.

You too can eat at the tiled stove, or you can request a private room, a table within one of the two adjacent restaurants, or a spot in the beer garden. Once you’re settled in, you’ll be given a beer list of some of the best beers Germany has to offer, plus an informal menu with homey items such as pork knuckle, stuffed Beef Roulade, and liver.

Wurstkuchl

Located along the Danube, Wurstkuchl is appealing simply because of its location. However, it has something going for it that many surrounding establishments don’t: age. Wurstkuchl is over 500 years old, hence its prime location next to the Old Stone Bridge. The kitchen itself, however, is even older; evidence suggests that the current kitchen’s location has been a cooking area since as early as 1135.

The food itself has remained more or less the same over the past 500 years. While the menu does include more modern offerings, its best-selling plate continues to be the bratwursts and sauerkraut with sweet granny mustard.

Experience history like you’ve never experienced it before. Visit the three oldest restaurants in Germany for a history lesson like you’ve never been given before.

For Kids: Renovation Ideas Perfect for Your Basement

photo via extraspace.com

Kids need their own space too. They need a safe and comfortable place where they can play, goof around, and generally just have fun. You don’t have to look far that place. In fact, you don’t even have to go one step away from your front door. Your home has just the right space to turn into a special kids zone—the basement.

Yes, behind the damp, dreary atmosphere lies the potential to be a fun, comfortable place where the kids can freely and safely play to their heart’s’ content, without disturbing the neighbors. So for your next home improvement project, try these basement renovation ideas that are perfect for kids.

Get Rid of the Moisture Problem

Before anything else, you must first address the moisture problem in the basement. Most basements have damp environments due to the pipes and mechanisms located in the room. Plus, basements are underground, so there’s moisture coming from the soil and not enough ventilation to let them all out.

It isn’t healthy to be exposed to such environments, especially for developing kids. Dampness encourages the growth of molds, which puts people  at risk of certain health effects, upper respiratory tract symptoms, coughing, and wheezing. Moreover, the moisture-rich environment itself is unhealthy for people.

As such, your first step for renovating the basement should be resolving the moisture problem. There several ways this can be done. You have to find the sources of the wetness and remove them then you can install insulation and waterproofing to get rid of the problem for good (or at least for a long, long time). When they moisture problem is done and dealt with, you can then move on to turning the basement to the space you want.

Make a Family Room

Spending quality time with the kids is crucial for building a closer relationship with them and for their development. But you don’t have to go far or spend a lot of money to have fun with the little squirts. Bonding time can be spent indoors, in your very own basement family room.

The basement family room can be an extension of your living room, except with better soundproofing. You can add in a big TV or projector, surround sound system, video game consoles, board games, and even a popcorn-making machine. The family can gather there watch movies, play all kinds of games, and be as loud as they want.

Build an Extra Bedroom

An extra bedroom is always useful when you have kids around. Kids need to be taught how to be independent and sleep by themselves. This allows parents to have peace and quiet at night and recharge for the next day.

You don’t have to extend outside to create another bedroom. With the moisture problem out of the way, the basement can be turned into one. The space doesn’t have a lot of natural lighting, but you can make up for it by installing for fixtures, brightly-painted walls, and exciting decor. And with that, you have the perfect kiddie room.

You can add a bathroom in the bedroom, so the kids don’t have to run upstairs when they need to go. It’s isn’t such a hassle to install an upflush Saniflo toilet since it comes with a macerator and discharge pipe that can be connected to your sewage system, septic tank, or holding tank with extension pipes.

Kids are notorious for flushing all kinds of things down the toilet, but the powerful macerating pump can break down most solid wastes to prevent clogging.

Turn It into a Playroom

Children love to play, and they love to go where the fun is. Instead of worrying where the kids are when they going out to play, why not just turn your basement in a room where the kids can play, hang out with their friends, and just have fun?

Child proof your basement by removing and locking away any dangerous equipment then install bright lighting and use age-appropriate decor. You can migrate all their toys and add in all sorts of fun things (e.g., indoor swings, a ball pit, tents, etc.) in the basement playroom.

Need something to inspire you? Here are some creative kids playroom ideas you can try out.

Convert It to a Music Room

For the young music enthusiasts, they need their own soundproofed studio where they can practice all they want (or be as loud as they want), without disrupting the neighborhood. And the basement is the perfect place for that. Being underground with very little opening, it has a natural soundproofing, so it doesn’t take a lot of work to turn it into a music studio.

Install sound dampening foam on the walls and seal the gaps between the door and the windows just to make sure the sounds stay in. Then you can add the sound system and instruments and let the kids play all they want.

Create a Cozy Reading Room

Reading a great habit to instill in kids. It helps develop their communication, critical thinking, comprehension, creativity, and imagination. To raise a family of bookworms, you can’t miss having your own cozy reading room or library inside the house. And your basement can be ideal for this purpose.

In the basement, it’s harder to see and hear what’s happening outside. You’re able to focus and enjoy without fear of any distractions. For the kids, letting them read in peace can be great for developing their concentration.

Aside from shelves of books, add in comfortable bean bags, mats, and cozy nooks where the kids can just sit or lie on their stomach and enjoy their books. The basement reading room can also be a place where the kids focus on studying and doing their homework.

Check out these back-to-school study room ideas to get inspired.

Final Word

After you deal with the moisture problem, the house basement can be turned into any room that you want. It’s perfect for creating a fun and safe environment where the kids can play, sing, dance, read, study, and explore all they want.

It’s important to give kids their own space. It helps develop their independence and confidence. From that, they can learn about commitment, responsibility, and obligation. By giving them their own space, you let them that they belong and that they have your trust. It won’t be apparent at the start, but you will see the good it does as they grow up.

About the 5K

The purpose of this race is to raise awareness for the “Gift of Life Marrow Registry”, and also provide a venue for the very first meeting of a donor and their recipient. The donor, a 28-year-old New York medical resident will meet the 54-year-old New Jersey mother and wife whose life he saved through the Gift of Life Marrow Registry. The New Jersey woman had been battling the potentially fatal Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), until the New York man donated his stem cells, via Gift of Life.

And this is not the first time this New York man saved a life: as a university student, he was shot while defending a woman during an attack in New Orleans.

Due to federal law, donors and recipients must remain anonymous for at least one year. But the New York resident and his recipient will finally learn one another’s identities at the Gift of Life Steps For Life 5K Run & Walk in New York City Oct. 14, starting at 8 am in Battery Park.
