The Shelter Pet Project #shelterpetlove

pic6

Each year approximately 3-4 million pets are adopted from shelter and rescue groups, but 2.4 million healthy and treatable pets still need our help to find a home. The Shelter Pet Project, in a collaborative effort between The Humane Society of the United States, Maddie’s Fund®, and the Ad Council, want to help these pets find homes.  The goal of The Shelter Pet Project is to make shelters and rescue groups the first place people turn when looking to get a new pet.

And why shouldn’t it be?  These pets are not “used” or “throw away” pets- they are companions that need a new home, usually due to no fault of their own.

Have you met Cooper?  Our newest addition, here since December.  He’s awesome.  He thinks he’s people- but he’s a whole lot better, in my opinion, since he can’t talk back and he doesn’t care if I put on weight.  After our dog Chaac died of cancer almost 2 years ago (also a rescue from a local shelter), we never thought we would find another dog to fill the hole Chaac left in our hearts.  We did quite a few fosters, but it was Cooper who stole the show- we just adore him.

chaac for getmehome

Chaac the Wonder Dog- who we miss dearly.

Speaking of fosters- have you met Sasha?  Our latest foster dog is looking for her forever home- if you think that could be you, email me for more info!

20150519_145847

Sasha is 6 years old, likes long walks on the beach (or anywhere, really), and is quite the lady on her leash. She never pulls, and walks at whatever pace you are- this pup aims to please.  Clearly a beauty, she will bat her gold eyes and dazzle you with a smile that she flashes to anyone- she’s a flirt.

Sasha is great in the car, loves belly rubs, and wants to be someone’s baby.  Just like any girly-girl, she likes to have her fur brushed.  She doesn’t love going up and down stairs (she’s a bit overweight), but will gladly play fetch in the backyard with you.  (By “fetch” I mean run wildly after that stick you threw and chew it to bits, or hold the ball in her mouth and show it to you.)

This is the perfect dog for empty nesters. She is fantastic in the car, never makes a peep and sits like she owns it.  Completely housebroken, Sasha knows her name, how to sit, and stay. Sasha has lots of energy, and is really strong- but she listens very well and is learning more commands.  She will beg for snacks if you have them- or stalk you- which some would find beneath them, but Sasha doesn’t care (as long as it ends with treats). She will also take them ever-so- gently from your hands.
In celebration of “National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day” on April 30 and to support “Adopt a Cat Month” in June, Lance Bass (a radio host and entertainer who first rose to fame as  a member of NSYNC) has joined The Shelter Pet Project to share the love and joy that adopted pets bring to his life. Bass, his husband Michael Turchin, and their rescue dogs Lily, Foster, and Dingo star in a “Meet My Shelter Pet” series video from The Shelter Pet Project. A second video, narrated by Bass, highlights the importance of shelter pet adoption and provides viewers with more information on how to adopt.

20150520_163739

The Shelter Pet Project showcases the unique bonds between shelter pets and their adoptive owners, and reminds people that there are thousands of amazing shelter pets ready to meet them. These videos and other ads help break down misconceptions surrounding shelter pets and spread the word that pets in shelters are wonderful and loveable.

Millions of people are looking to acquire a pet within the next year. If you are one of them, look first to shelter and rescue pets- the most loyal love you will ever find.

Win Balance Bar Prize Pack

Disclosure- I received the below in order to facilitate this review. I am a Balance Bar Ambassador and received information from them. All opinions are my own and honest.

pic7

According to a recent survey by Balance Bar, 43% of Americans feel most balanced during the summer! As we’re approaching June 21st, it’s the perfect time to get outside, enjoy the beautiful weather and start feeling more balanced. To help your readers feel good inside and out this summer, Balance Bar is sharing Gabby Reece’s tips for staying active and smart eating.

pic8

Check out these tips from The Balance Project guide, Gabby Reece as you get ready for summer.

• Make it your own: There is not one right way to get it done. There is the right way that works for you. When it comes to eating healthy, find the foods you like and implement those into your daily diet. The same goes for exercise. If you hate the gym then find something outside that is manageable for you. This is not about torture; this is about creating a lifestyle that you can do week after week.

  • Watch the calendar: Use summer for motivation to shape up but don’t wait for June 21st. If you wait until summer actually starts, you’ll feel rushed and end up crash dieting or doing a crazy workout schedule. I personally like to keep a calendar in my kitchen and cross off the days as I countdown to bikini weather. The visual reminder – right where you eat – is helpful in keeping you on track.
  • Sign up a friend: We tend to be more successful at accomplishing some type of exercise if we have an accountability partner. Solicit a friend and maybe use this as your time to connect. You can train for a 5k together or join an outdoor boot camp; there are a lot more options now that the weather is improving.
  • Plan to snack: Take snacks (like fruit, nuts or a Balance Bar®) wherever you go to prevent mindless eating. If I have an afternoon or early evening workout planned, I make sure to have one of these handy an hour or so before so that I have plenty of energy to get in a good workout.
  • Variety is key: Make as many meals as you can at home so you can control your nutrition. These are some of my favorite recipes,– fresh and full of veggies for springtime! To keep things interesting and fresh at my house, I try to rotate foods. One night I may go for something heavier with veggies and grains, and then the next night focus on proteins. I really try to change up the food and create a great deal of variety.
  • Each day is a new chance and it’s never too late: If you fall out of your summer shape up routine one day, don’t sweat it. Forgive yourself and move on – and just keep moving!

Clarks Shoes for Fashion and Function

My son and I are not often given the chance to coordinate outfits or have something that compliments each other’s outfits. I always thought that Moms with girls were given that opportunity, but Moms of boys were out of luck.  It’s not something I would push on him, but it would be cute for occasions.  Sometimes, I just want that moment, you know, the moment of look how cute these two are!

Clasks USA gave my son and I a chance to have that moment via amazingly stylish, functional and comfortable footwear.  They match, but are not overly “matchy-matchy” in that obnoxious way, and we can both wear them normally in our wardrobe.

pic9

I got to try out Womens Desert Boot Core in Oakwood Suede. Let me tell you a little more about this boot.

Inspired by the crepe-soled boots worn by British officers in World War II. Crafted from natural materials including oakwood suede for supreme comfort, its timeless styling has remained unchanged for over 60 years. Wear the original women’s Desert® Boot anywhere and celebrate vintage style.

This boot was instantly love at first foot in! No matter where go, these boots are comfortable, stylish and functional. No matter where I wear them, they get compliments. I like that I can dress up a pair of jeans or add a pretty texture to a skirt.

pic8

My son got to rock a pair of Clarks USA Boys Dessert Boot Youth. These are great for active kids. He can wear them with his uniform, with his regular “play clothes”, with a nicer outfit, and this is the perfect choice in footwear for outings.  Not great for wet weather, since they are suede, and we have not treated them yet.

pic7We both liked the available colors in both the ladies and boys styles. We thought getting mother son shoes was a fun experience.  Overall I have been more than pleased with the Clark’s USA line of footwear.

6 ideas for a pleasant family weekend in Bergamo

Bergamo is an ancient city in Lombardy, located on the picturesque foothills of the Alps. It can offer both rich and diverse architecture, variety of exciting activities, sincere and open people, surprisingly clean and fresh air. In a nutshell, Bergamo has all those things that make the city a perfect destination for holiday with kids!

6_ideas_for_a_pleasant_family_weekend_in_Bergamo_1

The article will help you to briefly get acquainted with the most interesting attractions in Bergamo that will please you and your kids.

Bergamo is one of four Italian cities with their centers completely surrounded by ancient walls.  In fact, Bergamo is split into two parts. The upper part is the ancient city (Bergamo Alta) located on the top of the hill; the lower part is the modern city (Bergamo Bassa) that doesn’t represent anything interesting for tourists. You can reach the ancient city either by car or public transport, but there is much more interesting way – funicular railway.

Funicular railway

Trip in the funicular car is a little adventure for small kids and also a great opportunity to enjoy nice views of the city. The lower station is located on Viale delle Muraand the upper one is in literally two steps from the famous Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. The funicular can fit up to 50 people, so don’t let slip your turn, otherwise you’ll have to wait another car.

6_ideas_for_a_pleasant_family_weekend_in_Bergamo_2

It’s interesting to know that tight orange cars of the Bergamo funicular have been operating since 1888 and originally they were drawn by horses. Funicular railway connecting upper and lower parts of Bergamo isn’t the only one in the city. In fact, there is another car able to take you from the Bergamo Alta to the very top of the hill.

Parco Faunistico Le Cornelle

It’s a scientific base of the University of Milan that is engaged in the problem of preserving grey parrots. Thus, apart from the usual walks among aviaries, Parco Faunistico Le Cornelle can offer the quite serious several hours excursion with a lot of fascinating stories about virtually every animal in the park.

Although the zoo isn’t very big, still it’s a real pleasure to spend time here. This tiny zoo has managed to gather various kinds of animals from guinea pigs to cheetahs. It has many cafes and restaurants as well as picnic areas equipped with tables and benches. So, if don’t want to spend the extra money on visiting cafe, you can simply bring some snacks with you and arrange little lunch in the open air.

6_ideas_for_a_pleasant_family_weekend_in_Bergamo_3

You should acknowledge beforehand that it’s a really tough task to get to Parco Faunistico Le Cornelle from Milan without your own car. Even from Bergamo itself, the park is located in about 11 km.  On the other hand, the park has a convenient parking zone, where you can safely leave your car.

ATB Transport Museum

ATB museum opens doors into the past and shows you how public transport of Bergamo has been changing for the last hundred years.  The museum is designed in a modern way and is full of interactive displays and multimedia installations. The real pride of the ATB Museum is its “time-travelling funicular” offering its visitors an opportunity to discover history of transport in Bergamo through the windows of funicular car.

Natural Science Museum Enrico Caffi

Judging from the many reviews, the Natural Science Museum in Bergamo is very interesting for kids, but can’t offer something very exciting for adults. However, the museum enjoys great popularity among both locals and tourist and you’ll meet here a lot of parents with children.

6_ideas_for_a_pleasant_family_weekend_in_Bergamo_4

The main exhibits are stuffed animals, ancient skeletons and fossils, different minerals and stones.  In general, the exposition is quite interesting and includes even a small collection of mammals.  Another great thing about the museum is that the entrance is free and the museum located in the historical center of Bergamo, so you can visit the museum during your city tour.

Discover the beauty of Bergamo surroundings

Rich historical heritage isn’t the only thing Bergamo is famous for.  It’s hard not to notice the beauty of the nature of Bergamo province.  Picturesque green valleys, serene clear lakes and magnificent mountains. All this is only in one hour drive from Bergamo.  For instance, you can visit lakes Endine and Iseo that are in 30 km and 45 km respectively.

Lake Iseo

On the shores of the Lake Iseo, you can admire beautiful sceneries and incredibly diverse landscapes including rocky walls sprouting out of the water, olive groves, tiny coves and bays. The lake is literally framed with many small cozy towns, so you have a large selection of hotels to stay in. Local gastronomic traditions deserve special mention. Such delicious dishes and fine wine you won’t find anywhere else in Italy!

6_ideas_for_a_pleasant_family_weekend_in_Bergamo_

Lake Endine

Whereas Lake Iseo is very popular among tourists, Lake Endine is rarely visited even by locals. It is small, about 6 km in length and there aren’t large cities nearby. Most visitors of Endine come here for fishing or watching birds and enjoying silence and solitude.

However, there are small beaches on the shores of well-equipped with all needed stuff for a good rest. Here you and your kids can rent a boat or enjoy water bike ride.

6_ideas_for_a_pleasant_family_weekend_in_Bergamo_6

Bergamo is a beautiful and charming city with very diverse and beautiful architecture. It’s a good holiday destination, but you shouldn’t forget that city tourism could be quite tiresome even for adults not to mention small kids.

Endless walking, hours of city tours and excursions – all this takes a lot of energy. Thus, try to solve transportation problem in advance. Spend a little bit more money on your vacation and allocate some funds to rent comfortable car for the whole family. Believe that in Italy, there is nothing to do without four wheels!

All the beauty of Italy lies in its cozy provincial towns surrounded by picturesque landscapes. Explore Italy in the most convenient way! Book a car at Bergamo Airport in advance to save money and get exactly that model you’re looking for.

What’s wood and steel with Japanese Quartz movement?  The answer is the new lines of watches from Nature’s Time.  Nature’s Time is currently running an IndieGoGo trying to reach their goal of $100,000 in funding, to further expand their line to include the gorgeous women’s watch.  I was given the opportunity to try out the women’s watch prototype and it is very nice. The company behind the the watches is built on three core foundations they are : strength, beauty, and compassion.  This is a great watch for both business wear and everyday life.

Xenoblade is a somewhat unknown game series, but not among those who are fans of RPG’s on Nintendo systems.  The game was originally going to be passed over for localization to the United States on the Wii, but instead was one of the shining gems for the Nintendo Wii.  The story follows Shulk and his friends as they battle Mechon killer robots with the help of the Monado sword.  The game play style is real time RPG, which means there are heavy RPG elements but the action is there as well, so stay on your toes.  Xenoblade Chronicles is a huge open world game which emphasizes exploration.   The story is winding and fun, with lots of drama, action, and excitement.  The game also takes full advantage of the new 3DSXL- it has gotten more portable and can ONLY be played on that system.  It uses the new ZL, ZR and C-stick for various controls as well as the added processor power to really move.  The face following 3D effects intensify the gameplay.  Instead of setting and resetting the 3D view, the system now follows the user’s face so immersion into the game is way easier.  Xenoblade Chronicles is out now for the new Nintendo 3DSXL, and will only work with this system.  The game retails for $39.99 and is available everywhere.  The Nintendo 3DSXL retails for $199.99.

Nintendo’s new Puzzle & Dragons has traditional RPG elements with pick up and play puzzle game play.  Throw in a dash of anime styling in one game, and Mario and friends into another and you’ve got yourself what is really two games in one awesome package. Puzzle & Dragons game play is easy- line up orbs of the same color with more then 3 in a cluster, the bigger your cluster the higher your score and the more orbs you destroy- thus, the more damage to gets dealt to your enemy.  There are also elemental elements where certain colored orbs are stronger against other colored orbs as well.  The game play is as deep as you’d like it to be.  For those who love puzzles, that itch is easily scratched with these games.  For those who are fans of RPG’s, this is an innovative take on the battle game mechanic.  What is really nice is the fact that there are actually two games packed into the one cartridge.  The Mario Brothers version is easier to get into, and Puzzle & Dragons Z has a more in depth story with more RPG elements.  Available for $29.99 pretty much everywhere games are sold.
