The New York Baby Show

This past weekend, there was a huge baby event for parents or parents to be at all stages of baby raising.  This even was The New York Baby Show.  The show was in New York City, as the name suggests, and filled Pier 92 to the brim with everything baby.  From clothes, to carriages, to bedding, snacks, drinks, music lessons, schooling, even an area to try out strollers and exhibitors educating moms and dads on finances as well.   Some of the exhibitors showcased were Canon, Babies R Us, Bitybean, Britax, and Haba.  Everyone at the show had baby related items.  Some had contests and raffles to give attendees as added incentive to check out their table.  Exhibitors also had a ton of freebies including baby formula, snacks, drinks, key chains, candy, and reusable shopping bags.

Cannon also had a set up that let you try out some cameras, and they would take one of you and your family as well.  We took one just of my son, who was covered in all the snacks he ate.  I swear, he was cleaner when he WAS a baby, lol.

Luckily enough, bloggers were able to go to an exclusive lounge which not only glammed up by Glam Squad mom and dad bloggers, but also had some food and drinks and a nice place to relax during the event.  If you wanted to, while you walked around visiting tables, your kids were able to be dropped off with the Nanny League, who help match families and nannies and all sorts of childcare.  Speaking of Nannies- we won a gift from Net Nanny, number one rated parental control software!  This was pretty cool for me, I never win anything, haha. We are excited to try it out, and see what it can do.  It’s supposed to protect kids from sites you don’t want them on, as well as “adult” sites and cyber-bullying.

It was very nice to have all the baby related exhibitors all in one place and even more interesting to see all the interesting inventions and gadgets meant to make a parents like easier with baby (as well as baby’s life more fun and educational).  The crowd at the show was quite diverse too, from pregnant women, couples, and people looking to get pregnant and doing their research.

Keep an eye out for it and make sure you stop by when next it rolls around for all your baby needs.

EVER AFTER at Paper Mill Playhouse

My son and I had the opportunity to see Paper Mill Playhouse’s Ever After, and we both enjoyed it. My son, surprisingly, liked it more then I did, and talked about it for days. Based on the fable “Cinderella”, but from the perspective that this wasn’t any damsel in distress waiting for some guy to come save her, this show is fun, funny, and great for families to see.

A bit silly at times (there is a song and dance where Danielle, aka Cinderella is thought to be the Gypsy queen from heaven and the prince is her goat companion in human form) it is all in good fun, and my son really enjoyed it.  Another fun addition was Leonardo da Vinci, who has a ball thrown in his honor, is a good friend of the Prince’s after a harrowing event at the beginning of the story, and steps in to save the day more then once.

This is a great show for kids of all ages, and a great one for the whole family.  Booster seats are located in the rear of the theater for smaller kids should you need them.  Ever After is a fun twist on a classic, something different for your children then the Disney damsels, and pays homage to a woman who knows how to take care of business.  Grab your tickets sooner rather then later for this entertaining show!

Paper Mill Playhouse presents the world premiere of a new musical based on the 1998 film starring Drew Barrymore and Anjelica Huston.  This is no fairy tale.  Ever After sets the record straight on the fable of Cinderella. Her name was Danielle and it was always about her wit, her smarts, her strength and her good friend Leonardo da Vinci.  She makes her own dreams come true. Warm and romantic, funny and smart, this is the musical you’ve been waiting for.

“We’re thrilled to present the world premiere of this beautiful musical,” commented Mark S. Hoebee, Producing Artistic Director for the Millburn theater. “I am delighted to showcase a new musical with strong, female leads, created by strong, female artists including Kathleen Marshall, Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich.”

The award-winning design team of Broadway veterans will feature Derek McLane (scenic design), Jess Goldstein (costume design), Peter Kaczorowski (lighting design), Nevin Steinberg (sound design), Mary-Mitchell Campbell (music supervision), David Gardos (music direction), Leah Loukas (hair and wig design), Rick Sordelet (fight direction) and casting by Telsey + Company.

Looking for the Perfect Travel Purse?

If you give me a big purse, I will carry everything in it. I do mean everything. Snacks for the kid, tissues, lip balm, hand cleaning products…the list goes on and on.
Ladies, I am going to let you in on a little trick. The secret to looking great while on the go doesn’t require effort. It requires you to find a style that flatters you, that is comfortable, and that will enhance your  your wardrobe subtly. Who would have thought that adding a bag to your look could be a game changer?

20150502_195156I am not talking about any bag either. I am talking about a Baliboca bag. These are pretty sweet for a Mom on the go. If I am dashing off to an after school event with the kid, or having a family fun day at the Zoo. My Baliboca Neoprene Shoulder Bag is great. I stays with me, requires no hands, and best of all, it can discreetly slip under my coat or sweatshirt if I want.

Now this is huge. You don’t want to know how many times I have been the lady that could just drag a suitcase in wheels around for all of the stuff motherhood requires. The Baliboca shoulder bag is great for helping me just say no to becoming a walking vending machine.

Seven Spoons Easy Meals for Two

20150415_180433

Trying new dishes or cooking styles can be difficult some times, often requiring a different type of spice profile, like curries and pickling spices, or even a new cooking apparatus like a wok or a smoker.  Either way, there are quite a few reasons one could use to not eat more adventurously.  I say these are simply excuses, broaden your cooking and eating horizons! and with meals by Seven Spoons there is no excuse not to try more kinds of foods at home. How easy can it get?  You just grab a bag from your grocer’s freezer and cook it.

We had the pleasure in trying Quinioa Vegetable Biryani, Chicken Biryani, Thai Green Curry, and Moroccan Chickpea Tagine,  all of which were quite good, being good presenters of their cultural dishes and their backgrounds.  Each dish made with fresh ingredients with a smell that will fill your entire home and have everyone coming down to see what that incredible smell is.  You can taste the Asian heat in the biryani while the Thai green curry is spicy and sweet, the Moroccan Chickpea Tagine is smokey and hearty.

Got Leaks? That’s OK- Many Women Do

Bladder leakage is a common problem.  Maye not one openly discussed with all manner of company, but it is quite common and should be discussed.  People think they are alone, they are embarrassed- and I’m like, so what about it?  It is so common that 1 in 3 women experience it, which is over 51 million American women.

pic9

The numbers are staggering and even more so is the stigma that bladder leakage has attached to it.  Many will not bring up bladder control issues thinking it is gross or improper.  Something to keep in mind is that more people in their 20’s experiences bladder leakage then those in their 80’s.  To bring about more awareness on the topic, Depend is running the #underwareness campaign to bring bladder leakage to the conversation.  As part of Underwareness, Depend is encouraging people to show their support for women with bladder leakage.  For every photo and video shared using #Underwareness, the Depend brand will donate $1, up to $3 million, through 2016 to fund charities that advance the research and education of bladder leakage.

Project Yellow Light Scholarship #stopthetexts

pic9

We all know how important it is to keep kids from texting and driving- and in general, safe behind the wheel.  So many accidents happen involving teens, due to inexperience and a feeling of invincibility.  As parents, we need to talk to them (and often) about safety while driving.

Last weekend, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Mazda Motorsports, National Organizations for Youth Safety (NOYS), U-Haul and the Ad Council announced the high school and college winners of their fourth annual Project Yellow Light college scholarship competition at the Mazda Speedway.

Project Yellow Light is a national contest and scholarship program that calls on students to create short videos educating their peers on the dangers of using mobile devices while driving.  According to a 2013 NHTSA report, ten percent of all drivers aged 15-19 years old involved in fatal crashes were reported as distracted at the time of the crashes. This age group has the largest proportion of drivers who were distracted.  To further the reach and impact of the peer-generated content, NHTSA has partnered with the Ad Council to turn the winning videos into public service advertisements, which will be distributed to more than 1,600 media outlets nationwide.

“Distracted driving is deadly and young drivers are most at risk, so we need to make sure they get the message,” said NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind. “The Project Yellow Light contest, which uses peer-to-peer messaging, demonstrates how creative public awareness efforts can reduce distracted driving on our roads.”

Winners were selected from two age categories: high school juniors and seniors, and college students. The high school grand prize was awarded to Marlowe Lexvold of South Haven, Minnesota. The college grand prize was awarded to brothers Sam and Wrenn Senser from South Bend, Nebraska.

Donate Stuff, Create Jobs

So, it’s spring.  The perfect (and somewhat cliche) time to clean up the house.  Spruce it up, declutter, get the screens into the windows- you know, the whole jam. It needs to happen- spring is a good a time as any!  Get all that winter “ew” out of the house, too.

pic9

There’s never a bad time to clear the clutter out of your home or garage or to do a wardrobe purge.  When you donate your stuff to Goodwill, the revenue from the sale of your donations helps fund job training and placement opportunities for people with disabilities and disadvantages directly in your community. That’s cleaning with a purpose.

pic8
Have you heard of the the “Donate Stuff. Create Jobs.” campaign?  Thanks to the programs and support services made possible by donations of clothes and household items, more than 261,000 people earned jobs in 2013 – that’s one person finding a job every 27 seconds of every business day. So you’re literally donating your stuff AND helping to create jobs.

Goya Foods – Yucca

We are adventurous eaters in this house.  We love to experiment with new foods, cooking techniques, and flavors.  But most of all, we love new ingredients.  You never know what will spice up those chicken cutlets or even a roasted chicken without trying new things.  One such new ingredient we recently experimented with was Yucca.  For those who do not know, yucca is a fibrous tuber, think 90% potato, 10% celery.  It is like a fibrous potato, but when cooked the texture is unique, not stringy,  and can complement many main dishes.

03 02 2015 cannon 065We tried a few recipes with our frozen yucca from Goya.  Of them the two stand outs were oven fried yucca fries and mashed garlic yucca, both of which are easy to make.  When preping the yucca, be sure to boil it until it is soft as your first step, then take out the tough inner core.  On some pieces, the core was already removed, but most had a bit of it left.  You may not understand what this core is, but when you see it you will know.  It is a shade darker then the rest of the flesh and is easy to distinguish as visibly more fibrous as well.  Below is our recipe for oven fried yucca fries followed by mashed yucca with garlic sauce, enjoy.

03 02 2015 cannon 066

Oven Fried Yucca Fries:

1 bag (24 oz.) frozen GOYA® Yuca

½ cup GOYA® Extra Virgin Olive Oil

3 tbsp. GOYA® Minced Garlic, or 8 cloves garlic, finely chopped

3 tbsp. GOYA® lite Adobo spice Mix

First boil the yucca as described above, then remove the core of the yucca.  As the yucca is boiling, grab a plastic zipper bag and put in the Adobo, garlic, and olive oil.  Shake up gently mixing the oil and spices.  After this, slice the yucca into french fry shapes- long stripes.  After cutting up approximately 3 yucca toss them into the oil and spice mixture, zip, and shake.  Once properly coated, transfer the yucca to a cookie sheet for baking.  Set the oven to 350 degrees and start baking.  The yucca are done when they are slightly brown.  These are not the same brown as french fries, so be sure to keep an eye on them.
