Every Sunday there is a ritual in our house, as usually kids get up early and wake up daddy- who for some insane reason likes waking up early. Daddy makes breakfast and then gets the newspaper from outside. Now the real fun begins- the toy flyers. Little goes nuts because he gets to see all the new toys and all that jazz. What if this weekly ritual had a new twist?

Should You Cap Your Kids’ Internet Usage?

The internet is a tool, and just like many tools it has the ability to be abused. The information age has given
people resources to instantly tap into nearly the entirety of human knowledge, receiving news, photos and
videos from around the world. And while in some instances it has made the globe smaller, it also has the
tendency to alienate people. We spend more and more time texting, messaging, and emailing, and old
fashioned human interaction has become less a part of our daily lives. For adults, it’s just another way we
get things done, and it’s up to the individual to decide when enough is enough. But for children, it can be
easily abused. Our kids need internet access. Kids use the internet to do their homework, watch videos and television shows, and stay in touch with friends and family who are otherwise separated by geography. But if they’re not monitored, kids can be exposed to stuff online they should never have to see, and it’s up to us parents to draw the line. We should certainly monitor what they’re doing on the internet, unless you want to come home and find your little girl has accidentally stumbled across some depraved pornographic web portal. But do we also need to monitor the amount of time they’re spending online?

Children’s brains are still developing into their teen years. And when our kids are elementary age or
younger, they are incredibly impressionable. The internet blasts a ton of information our way, and there
may be some correlation between attention deficit disorder and the jam-packed, multi-tasking routine

DS Lite- Great Gift for the Holidays!

Nintendo makes good systems at a good price. The most recent addition to their line up (the 3DS) might not be the best answer for all consumers out there- the very young or those with vision issues. I personally love it, and think it is a very good hand held. But for my kids I would rather have a system they can use no matter what age, to its maximum potential without breaking the bank for the system and games. One of the more recent additons to the Nintendo handheld market to the rescue, the DS lite. The DS lite is smaller then the first iteration of the DS, has better battery life and comes in four colors: red, blue, pink and black.

The system is built like a rock. Ours has taken quite a few tumbles without much more then a scuff mark. Even while being passed back and forth while paused in the middle of a game, the system just keeps on going. This is not an easy feat for any piece of technology!

The DS lite also has access to multi player gaming, both through a local connection and also through the Internet. I like how the Internet gaming doesn’t use any personal information. Instead, you trade DS friend codes or just connect and play with another random player from any corner of the globe.
