STUDY: Women Sleep Better Next to Their Dog Than Their Partner

Women and dogs are a match made in heaven and this was even supported by Honest Paws newly released study about dog and human relationships, where it listed down 95 benefits of having a dog.  Having both dogs and a husband, I can concur- the dogs are WAY easier to sleep with, LOL.

women sleep study

Dog provides women:

  • dog’s gaze (think of those puppy eyes!) induces a release of oxytocin, “the love hormone,” which is linked to a strengthened emotional bond between mothers and babies
  • Women are more intuitive to dogs’ emotions than men because they have a higher emotional sensitivity
  • Dogs who interact with women are 220% more likely to be treated like people versus dogs who don’t interact with women
  • Single women place more value on how a potential partner interacts with their dog than single men do
  • Women are more likely to view dogs as members of their family
  • Young women who own dogs take fewer days off sick from work
  • Women sleep better next to dogs than they do other people

Most of the time, my dogs are super easy to sleep with. The bigger dogs can be a little harder to move, but not always. None of them hog the bed or the blankets anywhere near the amount that my husband does, haha.

Sleep in whatever way works for you- which for me, most of the time, is with at least one dog, and my bed-hog husband. Goodnight!

3 Tips on Having a Longer, Healthier Life

long, healthy life

Self-care, particularly in later age, may be extremely difficult, even for the healthiest among us. As we age, the range of motion in our joints decreases, and as a result, we begin to notice changes on and within our bodies that we never noticed previously. In this post, you will learn about the most prevalent difficulties that we encounter later in life, as well as how to fix or alleviate them when they arise.

It is inevitable that we could experience humiliating ailments at some time in our lives, but they will not go away unless we seek medical attention. Your doctor has probably seen a lot of people with the same thing you’re having trouble with, so go see him or her and get checked out.

Joint discomfort

Joint discomfort affects a large percentage of the population. Obesity, as well as excessive or insufficient usage of that joint over time, are contributing factors to the discomfort. Fortunately, most joint pain issues may be resolved by taking pain relief medication to alleviate the discomfort. If medicine isn’t your thing, there are alternative options, such as physiotherapy or low-impact workouts like yoga and gentle walking. You can also use tape to support your joints. You can read more here if you’re wondering “What does kinesiology tape do”? Even though walking hurts, it’s important to do it since it will help your joints over time. Exercise, of course, can help you lose weight, which will in turn alleviate any joint discomfort you may be experiencing. Check with your doctor for any other underlying health concerns if these solutions don’t work out for you.

Bunions

A bunion is an abnormally large lump on the big toe joint. Bunions may make walking or even putting on shoes difficult. Bunions aren’t only caused by the sort of shoes you wear, although they can contribute to their advancement. Keep an eye on your feet for signs of arthritis and flat feet, which can lead to bunions.

It is common for bunions to develop over time and become more severe. If you suspect you have one, make an appointment with your regular doctor so that you can be sent to a podiatrist for evaluation. If this is the case, you may either have bunion surgery or treat them at home with ice packs and supportive straps.

Skin conditions

As we grow older, our skin begins to show signs of ageing. Regardless of how many cosmetics we use to attempt to keep our skin youthful, the inevitable will happen. Skin suppleness will diminish and wrinkles will emerge. Your skin’s texture and elasticity will improve if you drink plenty of fluids throughout the day. Ask your pharmacist about the best products to use to keep your skin healthy.

Remember to take good care of your body by eating the correct meals, getting plenty of sleep, limiting your alcohol use, and increasing your physical activity. This will maximize your chances of avoiding health complications. Keep your mind and body in good shape as you age.

How to Deal With Insomnia as an Adult

Around 10 to 30 percent of adults have chronic insomnia. It is common, yet it is still often neglected or missed. Insomnia is like a devious thief at night, stealing your much-needed rest and sleep. And it can slowly and quietly take over your life if left unnoticed. Not treating or managing sleep disorders like insomnia can lead to severe long-term health complications, especially as people age.

Sleep is a significant factor in achieving holistic wellness. The lack thereof can easily affect someone’s health, including daily mood, energy levels, and productivity. Here’s what you need to know about insomnia and how to cope with it effectively.

What is Insomnia?

Sometimes, even when physically tired, sleeping can still be a challenge. This can be considered normal, especially for busy and working adults. However, suppose you experience difficulty in falling or staying asleep. In that case, you always feel that you cannot go into a deep sleep, you wake up frequently at night, and you experience this almost every night, you may be experiencing insomnia. Its long-term symptoms may also include fatigue or not feeling well-rested, sleepiness during the day, brain fog, changes in mood, and feeling extreme emotions.

Many things can cause insomnia. And depending on its longevity and impact, it can be identified as the following types:

Acute Insomnia

Acute or short-term insomnia is among the most common types of insomnia adults experience. The feeling of sleeplessness lasts only for a few days or weeks and can often be caused by stressful events or significant changes and adjustments that one experiences in life. This includes moving to a new place or house, starting a new job, or grieving a loss of a loved one—all of which are part of adulthood.

Chronic Insomnia

Chronic insomnia is a more severe type of sleep problem. It is usually characterized by experiencing difficulty sleeping for at least three nights per week for more than three months. Chronic insomnia can have similar root causes to acute cases. But it can also be related to other factors like sleeping habits and sleep hygiene, physical and psychological health problems, neurological problems, medications, and other sleep disorders.

Effects of Insomnia

Insomnia messes up your sleep pattern. Being unable to sleep or rest at night impacts the human body. It can cause a decline in productivity and performance at work or school and affect your emotions, further compromising your personal relationships.

Insomnia also increases the risks and severity of physical health problems, like high blood pressure and heart diseases. Additionally, it can cause or aggravate mental health problems like depression and anxiety.

When and How to Get Diagnosed

If you experience persistent difficulty sleeping or staying asleep at night, it is best to speak to your physician about it. They will tell what tests you should undergo to diagnose you and prescribe treatment clinically. The earlier you consult, the better.

To know what’s been causing your insomnia, your physician or specialist may request physical exams, including blood tests. They may also review your sleeping habits and require you to have a sleep log or a diary for a couple of weeks. Then, if they need more in-depth data, a sleep study can be a course of action, which involves monitoring body activities like brain waves and breathing as you sleep.

Tips For Combating Insomnia At Home

If you have had insomnia or feel like you are on your way to developing such a sleep problem, there are things you can do to manage your condition at home.

Have a Sleep Schedule

Having a regular sleep schedule and strictly following it can be challenging for most adults. This especially applies to those who hustle in their careers and businesses or take care of their family. But it is important to note that quality sleep is a key to productivity. Hence you have to make sleep a priority.

Try to keep a proper balance of work and life. Schedule your sleeping time and stick to it as much as possible. When it’s bedtime, try to turn off all gadgets like your phone and make your bedroom conducive to relaxing and sleeping. Try to wake up on time and follow this routine. This will help your brain memorize your body clock and trigger sleep hormones regularly when needed.

Be Active During the Day

People get easily sleepy when tired. To help the brain recognize the need for sleep at night, try to be active during the day. Doing some light exercise in the morning and staying active the whole day can help use up your energy, leading to feeling more sleepy when it’s bedtime.

Moreover, exercising before bedtime has been known to help induce sleep and promote better quality shuteye. Therefore, it is advisable to do light workouts like aerobics or yoga 1 to 2 hours before bedtime. These exercises release endorphins and elevate the body temperature, signaling the brain to wake up. When both start to recede, the feeling of sleepiness will begin to kick in.

Limit Your Caffeine Intake

Caffeine, a chemical compound found in coffee, is a stimulant. It increases blood pressure, stimulating the central nervous system, the heart, and the muscles. That is why you feel awake and energized upon intake. It also blocks the adenosine receptors in the brain, the sleep-promoting receptors.

Additionally, caffeine is a known diuretic, meaning it causes frequent urination. All of these sensations can disrupt sleeping patterns. Try to minimize your caffeine intake daily, and do not take anything caffeinated at least six hours before bedtime.

Using a Comfortable Mattress

Insomnia can be caused by many factors, including your sleeping environment. Sleeping in an unfamiliar or uncomfortable bed can exacerbate the difficulty in getting a night of good sleep. Sleep is your capital to productivity, so better invest in a bed that will help you relax more. A soft, clean, and hypoallergenic Talalay latex mattress, can help relieve tension and relax muscles without risks of triggering allergic reactions like nasal allergy or asthma.

Practice Meditation

Meditation has been widely used for calming and relaxation. It primarily involves proper breathing and awareness of yourself—mind and body. Studies suggest that mindfulness meditation can help combat insomnia and promote better sleep among adults. Mindfulness meditation revolves around mindfulness-awareness, where, through proper breathing and thinking, you focus your mind on the present.

This helps eliminate worries from the pastor of the future, therefore allowing you to relax and drift to slumber. There are guided meditations online as well as apps for meditation and sleep. You can also seek and join mindfulness and meditation groups to help you.

Therapy For Insomnia

If your insomnia has become chronic, you may need to consider more advanced solutions like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). As a psychotherapeutic approach to treating insomnia, CBT helps people recognize behavior and beliefs that affect sleep and sleeping patterns. Then, a psychotherapist or sleep therapist will recommend strategies and treatment to reverse or change these behaviors to help you sleep better.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for insomnia or CBT-I may include techniques like the following:

Stimulus Control Therapy– Helps develop better sleeping habits by eliminating the things that make you resist sleep. This includes only going to bed when sleepy, avoiding excessive naps, and following a regular sleep schedule.

Relaxation Techniques–Involves activities that relax and calm the body and the mind, like meditation, muscle relaxation, and imagery.

Light Therapy– Exposure to artificial light that emits similar light to daylight but without harmful UV. This helps reset a person’s circadian rhythm or body clock.

Biofeedback– Observation of biological factors, like heart rate and muscle tension, by recording patterns using medical devices. Sleep therapists will provide the necessary feedback and prescriptions to manage or change the patterns using the data gathered.

If All Else Fails

There are many other treatment methods and approaches to manage insomnia more. Though sleeping pills may provide immediate relief, they are not always the best option as they can lead to being reliant on medication. Changing your sleeping habit and improving sleep hygiene can promote better quality sleep and combat insomnia in the long run. But if your sleeping problem lasts for more than four weeks, especially if it is harming your daily life, it is best to call your doctor.

Other problems like difficulty breathing when you are sleeping or experiencing pain that prevents you from sleeping can be a whole other health condition that correlates with insomnia. But, again, it is best to have yourself checked by a licensed health professional to get accurate diagnosis and treatment suggestions.

Don’t Let Insomnia Take Over Your Life

Insomnia is among the more severe sleep problems that adults commonly face. If untreated, it can cause more health complications down the line. In addition, it can be crippling only if you let it. Take back control of your sleep and your life by developing healthier sleeping habits and getting professional help when needed, as early as possible.

Healthy Habits to Keep Up in the Holiday Season

holidays

The holidays are the perfect time to indulge and maybe not stick to your usual healthy habits. But, even though you might be eating more desserts and skipping a couple of days at the gym, it’s still important to try to make some healthy choices during the holidays. If you suddenly throw all of your healthy lifestyle habits out the window, it can be hard to get back into them once the holidays are over. Plus, you can find that you run out of steam halfway through the holidays and you suddenly feel very sluggish and rundown. If you want to stay somewhat healthy during the holidays, here are some habits to keep up.

Keep Your Diet Balanced

There are lots of tasty treats floating around in the holidays, and it’s expected that you’re going to indulge a bit more than normal. There’s no need to deny yourself all of your favorite things, but it is a good idea to try and keep your diet balanced. So, even as you reach for the cookies, make sure you’re also balancing it out with plenty of vegetables. Be sure to get all of your essential nutrients, have plenty of fiber in your diet, and try to control your portions too.

Get Outdoors

Even if you’re active normally, the holidays can feel like a free pass to be a bit more sedentary. You might not keep up your usual workout schedule, but it’s still a good idea to try and be somewhat active even during the holidays. Suddenly not doing anything active could affect not just your physical health but your mental health too. It might be cold outdoors, but getting outside for a walk or bike ride can be the ideal way to work off all the food you’ve been eating. If you’re feeling full after Christmas lunch, a brisk walk could perk you up again.

Control Your Alcohol Consumption

The alcohol is usually flowing during the holidays, and it can be tempting to accept any drink that’s put into your hand. But you’re not obligated to drink through the holidays, and it could make your experience much less pleasant. If you struggle to turn down a drink, you can find resources like https://www.sunshinebehavioralhealth.com/colorado/colorado-springs/ that can help you. If the holidays stress you out, there are better ways to unwind than to keep drinking.

Take Some Time to Yourself

Being around a lot of people during the holidays can be exhausting, especially for introverts. If you’re getting tired of socializing, make sure you take time for yourself. Everyone deserves some time to relax and have some time alone, even if it’s just half an hour or so. It can be your time to take a nap, read a book, listen to some music or do some yoga. Try to carve out some time just for you at some point during the holidays.

Keep up these healthy habits during the holidays and you’ll feel healthy and happier in the festive period.

Simple Ways To Lead A More Natural, Eco-Friendly Life

With ultra processed food, gas guzzling vehicles and super fast fashion, it would seem near impossible to exist in today’s society without amassing an enormous carbon footprint. So many aspects of the modern world are damaging the planet, but it isn’t too late to put an end to such harmful practices. Thankfully there are a number of alternative pathways that you can explore which are far more sustainable and ethical, allowing you to lead an eco-friendly lifestyle that preserves the wonder of nature. So, if you’re interested in finding out more, then simply read on to uncover some of the best earth-friendly ideas that can make the most of today.

Change The Way That You Eat

The most effective way to lead a more natural, eco-friendly lifestyle is to change the way that you eat. There are so many different food practices that have a disastrous impact on the environment, and it appears to be getting worse with each year that passes – the Amazon rainforest is being destroyed to make way for meat farms that will use masses of water and create a seemingly endless river of toxic waste, while foods from every corner of the globe hop from country to country racking up thousands of miles before they reach your plate. The animal agriculture industry is doing real harm to the natural world, not only by consuming an excess of resources and making unmanageable waste, but also by releasing enormous amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Choosing to eat a more plant based diet that’s made up of fruit, vegetable and grain based foods is far more environmentally friendly, but if you’re a content carnivore then you can still get your meat and fish fix in a more sustainable way. Choosing to hunt for or catch your own food is a natural way to eat, so visit a fishing store like tailored tackle to get a rod and a net or head to a hunting store to purchase a rifle and gain the relevant licenses. Utilizing your local surroundings in this way is the most environmentally friendly option when it comes to meat and fish. Opting for local fruits and vegetables that come from within your country will help even further, as this way it will only have to travel by truck rather than racking up miles on a plane or ship. Focusing on local produce will teach you how to eat seasonally too, which will allow you to better connect with nature and the world around you.

Change The Way You Travel

Walking beside a busy road tells you all that you need to know about the state of our world since the dawn of cars, trains and trucks – choking on the fumes as they fog up your vision and leave a chemical taste in the air, it’s clear that almost all forms of transport are devastating the environment. Each day there are many ecological and social disasters that take place as a result of modern transport options, whether this means horrifying oil spills from ships that decimate the ocean or child miners forced to dig for cobalt in the Congo for car chips and batteries. It might not always be possible to avoid cars, trains and boats altogether, but if you want to lead a more eco-conscious existence then you need to reduce your consumption of modern transport! Choosing instead to walk or ride a bicycle is the perfect alternative, as you’ll be creating no toxic fumes whatsoever along the way. If you need to go further afield, then choose to take a bus that’s more efficient or car pool by getting a lift from someone who is already heading in the same direction. Even smaller, unexpected journeys can be more environmentally friendly, as making the choice to walk up the stairs rather than use a lift can cut your carbon footprint noticeably over time! The world has enough smog and smoke clouding up its atmosphere, so it’s up to each individual to do their bit and make a change to the way they travel.

Leading a more natural, eco-friendly life isn’t always easy, but it can be one of the most rewarding and inspiring changes that you can make. Deciding to protect and preserve the planet rather than going to destroy it will give you a sense of pride and connection that you will never get elsewhere, so there’s no time like the present to make a few beneficial adjustments to your daily life.

Tips For Remaining In Good Health

lunch

Taking care of yourself is important but not always easy. You may be a busy person with a lot on your mind and push your wellness to the side at times.

If you want to remain in good health for the long term then you must start making yourself a priority. Learn some ways and tips for how you can stay in good health and improve your wellbeing so you can function optimally each day and have more natural energy.

Address Concerns with Your Doctor

Have a primary care physician and someone you can schedule regular checkups with and visit when you’re feeling ill. Talk to your doctor about your current medications and prescriptions and bring up any discomforts you are feeling. In the case that you discover negative side effects or ailments from taking a drug such as Zantac then you should dig a bit deeper to figure out the root cause of why you are experiencing additional health issues. It may be wise to visit this website and get in touch with someone who can help you better navigate your circumstances.

Exercise & Eat A Well-Balanced Diet

Another tip for remaining in good health is to stay active by exercising and eating a well-balanced diet. You’ll be able to build stronger muscles and bones this way and keep your immune system working well. Working out often will not only help you keep fit but will provide you with a way to reduce your stress as well. Stick to eating a lot of nutritious foods such as fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins, and try to stay away from processed foods, sugar, and saturated fats as much as possible. Drink a lot of water and fluids to stay hydrated and focus on maintaining a healthy body weight.

Focus on Mental Health

Your mental health is another piece of the puzzle that you should pay attention to when it comes to remaining in good health. It’s important that you try to maintain a positive mindset and not let negative emotions or thoughts get the best of you. Boost your mental health by making social connections, staying active, performing different relaxation practices and techniques, and putting self-care at the top of your to-do list. You might also want to spend more time outside and in nature, if you’re feeling overwhelmed or experiencing a lot of anxiety.

Get Plenty of Sleep

Don’t skimp on sleep if you want to be at your best and feel good mentally and physically. Remain in optimal health by getting plenty of rest and sleep daily. Lack of sleep can leave you feeling groggy and moody and you may make silly mistakes at work or react to situations emotionally instead of logically. Configure your bedroom so that it’s a relaxing and soothing space where it’s easy to fall asleep and make sure you have a calming bedtime routine to follow. Getting enough sleep will help you feel ready to get out of bed each morning and tackle the day ahead with enthusiasm and optimism.

Unexpected Symptoms of Anxiety To Watch Out For

Anxiety disorder is one of the most common mental health problems and our awareness of it is growing. People that never would have been diagnosed in the past are getting the help that they need because they know how to spot the signs. If you are constantly worried for no real reason, it’s likely that you have an anxiety disorder.

stress busting

However, there are still a lot of people that are not getting the right treatment for anxiety because their disorder displays in different ways. Anxious thoughts are not the only sign to look out for and the disorder can impact you in ways that might surprise you. These are some of the unexpected symptoms of anxiety disorder.

Muscle Pain

The muscle tension that you feel when you are under stress is well known. We all experience it, but for anxious people, this feeling never goes away. The constant tension can lead to severe pain and sore muscles that just won’t go away. There are, of course, a lot of different reasons for muscle pain. However, if you find that you often have pain around the neck and shoulders, this could be because you are very anxious and you are holding all of that tension in your muscles. If you can find ways to manage your mental health, you should notice a big change in your muscle tension.

Skin Problems

Anxiety and stress are closely related, which is why skin problems are common in people with anxiety. When you are stressed and anxious, the body releases cortisol and adrenaline, and these hormones can cause acne and an irritated scalp. If you find that you have a lot of pimples or different skin problems for no reason, your anxiety might be the cause.

Heavy Drinking

People that are stressed out often rely on alcohol to alleviate their symptoms. They drink because it’s a depressant and it makes them forget about the stress for a few hours. People with social anxiety may also drink heavily to make themselves feel more relaxed in certain situations. This is a dangerous habit to get into and if you find yourself drinking a lot on a regular basis, you should consider rehab for alcohol before the problem gets out of control. Having a few drinks with friends doesn’t mean you have an anxiety disorder but if you regularly abuse alcohol, you should consider what the underlying cause might be.

Chest Pains and Breathing Issues

Having anxiety and panic attacks is not easy on the body. The constant worry, high blood pressure, and rapid heartbeat can all lead to chest pains that are quite similar to heart attack symptoms. This feeling often leads concerned anxious people to go see a doctor because they are worried that they might be having a heart attack. However, these pains are caused by something different – anxiety disorder. Quite often, people with panic disorders develop breathing problems. They may have shortness of breath or chronic hyperventilation which also causes pain in the area around the heart. If you notice these symptoms, you should get it checked out because it may be something more serious. However, it is often caused by anxiety.

Anxiety doesn’t just cause nervous thoughts, it causes a range of different symptoms that you should watch out for, including these unexpected ones.
