7 Easy Ways to Prevent a Stroke

The scariest thing about strokes is that you never know when or if they’re going to happen. Thankfully, there are a lot of things that you can do now to reduce the risk of having a stroke later in life, and they  all cost little to no money to  incorporate into your daily life. Here are a few of those ways.

Lose Weight

While it may be one of the most common advice people give, it’s also one of the most important. Ultimately, the goal is to get your body mass index at 24 or lower. Changing up your diet is the quickest and easiest way to drop some weight. Avoid saturated and trans fat, substitute any soda that you drink with water, and limit your caloric intake to 1,500 or 2,000, depending on how active you are.

Exercise

It was your New Years Resolution to exercise more often, right? It was probably your New Years Resolution last year, as well as the year before. Stop procrastinating and just do it. You need to exercise at least five days a week. It’s extremely easy to do. Start small by walking around your neighborhood in the morning or evening. When you arrive at work, avoid the elevator and take the stairs. It’s probably better to break up your exercises throughout the day when you’re just starting out, and once you’re used to exercising, switch it up and do one or two solid sessions. In combination with changing your diet, exercising will dramatically reduce your risk of having a stroke.

Quit Smoking

You know how your other resolution was to either reduce your amount of smoking or stop altogether? It’s time to get started on that and drop the habit altogether. Smoking dramatically increases your chance of having a heart attack or a stroke. Giving up the smokes will result in a longer life, not to mention the extra cash in your wallet. If you need someone to help you fight those cravings, place your trust in a loyal friend who can support you in your cause. You can use several methods to quit smoking, such as nicotine pills or patches.

Surprising Reasons Why You Gain Weight

It is very common that if your diet is composed of fried foods, big servings, desserts, sodas and alcohol could lead to weight gain. It remains a question why people lose a little a weight even if they are doing some physical activities. However, the big question is why do people gain weight even if they are living a healthy lifestyle such as having a healthy diet and regular exercise? Truly, weight gain is a nightmare for most especially when the weighing scale keeps increasing.

want to lose weightThere are several things that must be considered why you are gaining weight even if you are strict with the diet and remains physically active. More likely, there are so many factors for this problem, the major ones are the following:

 Lack of Sleep

In reality, the body functions at its best when you are well rested. When you do not have a good sleeping habit, the body is experiencing physiological stress and you get to store more fat. When the person is tired, he cannot handle stress effectively and for most, the coping mechanism is to eat more. Also, sleeping late will have a greater chance that you will take a late-night snack, as a result, your calorie intake will be more than the appropriate daily value. Instead, when you have a hard time to sleep and want to eat, you can try drinking green coffee bean or green tea than those high calorie drinks. Also, you can have a white kidney bean for late-night snacks. Some of the symptoms that you are not getting enough sleep are fatigue, feeling of irritability and low energy level. With this, make sure you get 8 hours of sleep every night and if this is a tall order for you, adjust your sleeping habits gradually by adding 15 minutes each night and you will experience the effects of a good night’s sleep.

Stress

The society we live in demands that we must do more, achieve more and do more. Stress keeps people moving forward and helps in coping with the demands of life but it can affect ones emotions and moods. Stress is the result of too many responsibilities, coping with pressures and financial stability and could trigger a biochemical process that you can survive. In effect, the body stores fuel, slows down metabolism and dumps out chemicals like leptin, cortisol and other hormones which could be the leading cause of obesity.

Vitamin Angels

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Vitamin Angels Give Childhood for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

‘Tis the season to give.  Now is the time where people give and give to one another in their families and with heir friends.  But there are also those to thin of who are not as fortunate as most.  One such group are children who are “undernutritioned” or malnourished. These kids are from many different countries including the United States.  Take a look around you this week, how many kids are running around like wild animals?  Or just playing around quietly?  Both of which would not be possible for nearly 3.1 million children this year.   Give Childhood back to children in need.

Over the holidays one of the Little Man’s favorite activities are roaming from family member to family member and picking their brains.  Absorbing new opinions and ideas, from relatives who are only seen once or twice a year or just watch something different one TV, finding out about the newest silly rhymes, or simply learn about what’s for dinner its all about socializing for the little guy.  Another one of course is hide and seek  This one is fun until you get one smarty pants adult who will count and not look for the hider.  Not cool, but there is always one.  As a child of a previous generation my fun at the holidays was a bit different.  I loved to learn all about what was for dinner and how such a hot kitchen overflowing with pots, pants, dishes and silverware turns into a wonderful dinner with every detail cooked to perfection.  Leading to full bellies and snoring relative, “resting” their eyes before dessert.

Help Manage Your Child’s Dental Anxiety

If you ask any child, they can probably tell you that going to the dentist is the last thing they want to do. Most children are afraid of going to the dentist – the only problem with this is that it is vital for children to go to the dentist once or twice a year. Children must go to the dentist for a variety of reasons – they have new teeth coming in and they can be more susceptible to cavities, mainly because they eat a lot of candy and they have a high sugar content in their food. When it comes down to it, there are many ways to alleviate a child’s dental anxiety. Here are five tips to help parents manage their child’s dental anxiety.

The earlier the better. Alleviating a child’s fear of dentists earlier in their life is important, because they will be more accustomed to going to the dentist when they get older. You can imagine going to the dentist the first time – with all their shiny metals tools – it would scare any child. So, it is crucial that you build up a child’s comfort factor when it comes to going to the dentist. You usually want to start when your child’s first teeth come in.

Make it easy. Most parents assume that they have to explain to their child about all the procedures that a dentist will perform, but if you want to alleviate a child’s anxiety, you want to keep it vague. The reason for this is simple: the more you explain to them, the more questions your child will have. The more questions there are, the more nervous they will get. This is especially the case when they are in the chair and asking about the tools on the dentist’s table.

Vicks Humidifier

vicks

The temperature is dropping and with school now well into the swing of things that means one thing, colds and the flu are on the way.  Sniffles and headaches are bound to happen, if not count yourself incredibly lucky.  In our house when a cold or flu hits, it goes round and round until everyone has had it, sometimes more then once unfortunately.  To help remedy the situation as with most, preparation is key.

To prep for flu season we are taking a look at the Vicks Filter Free Cool Mist Humidifier.  The humidifier is hold 1.2 gallons of water and can run for 30 hours per filling.  The mist that comes out is cool to the touch so it is perfect for a bedroom over night.  One of the other nifty features is the scent pad.  The scent pad lets you add a smell to the mist which comes out.  There is also a way to control the intensity of the scent.  There are slots for 2 pads, so on those extra stuffy nights, two can be used at the same time.  But the option is always there to use one or no pads as well.  The pads are especially good for congestion.  Instead of a long night of coughing and nose blowing, with the help of these pads a more restful sleep is at hand.  The mist itself is controlled by knob which lets you control how much mist comes out as well.  The mist will stop when the water is empty, but I would not suggest letting that happen- and with the ability of the humidifier to run for 30 hours, running it overnight won’t be a problem.
